? How To Completely Uninstall Second Life on a Mac ?
05-23-2007 21:51
ok so i noticed that there was a step by step process to completely uninstall Second Life on windows but I have a mac =/ so step by step.. how do you completely uninstall Second Life on a mac?

Oh and for the record.. I too have been having system freeze problems! I am really fit to be tied. I did a hardware check on my Mac ibook G4... and it was fine. I have cleared my cache and it worked for a little bit but then "freeze" grrr >:(

Also something else that has been happening to my mac. Every time i have a system freeze I have to push the power button to shut down the laptop. Then push the button again to turn the mac back on and wait for the display to show and it doesn't ... so i push the button again and wait and try again ... sometimes the display will show sometimes it won't.. is this normal?? What could be causing this?

I have been thinking about reinstalling second life .. then if that didn't work i was going to remove a memory i installed, to see if that may have been causing issues.... and if all else failed i was even thinking about completely reinstalling my mac software. But .. I see now that everyone else is having freeze issues as well.. so I am not to sure i want to blame the freezes on my mac...

I noticed this on the mac system requirements :

"Second Life is not compatible with dial-up internet, satellite internet, and some wireless internet services."

..and was thinking perhaps.. the fact that i have a wireless connection may be one of the reasons i was freezing.... gah .. who knows??

This is soooo frustrating I really want to just toss my mac and go with windows :(

If there is a linden out there reading this.. at least respond to let us know you that you have seen this blog.. I feel like the lindens still have no clue about this. =l

wishing you all the best of luck with your second lives..

Yes, same problem, too.

Starting SL on MACbook pro Intel Core Duo. SL freezes after some minutes. Then crashes the interface and opens this window to tell Linden about the error.

It's getting a financial problem, too, i pay my $ for land, but cant use it. Sure, i dont have any chance to accuse LL, but maybe someone knows a better way to contact the developers than this forum?

Maybe we all have to report again and again this problem to LL that they notice and fix it?

I have been using different routers and modems, cable as well as wifi ..and havent noticed any coherency in the 'freeze rate' and device ...
still, sometimes i can stay on for hours ...then again crash 5 times in 30 minutes. I have not been able to find out why.

this issue has been ever since 1.14. and no responce from LL ...they dont even mention it.

Little workaround when freezing...
05-24-2007 10:03
When my MacBook Pro is freezing now, I no longer do a restart by pushing the on/off button. What I do is: I just close the display lid and wait until the comp falls to sleep. Then I open the lid again and am able to close SL. You don't save time by this, but at least you don't need to do that cruel restart...

Update to 1.16. didn't make things better...I am still crashing a lot!

Remove your cache file manually, not via the preferences within SL. Dump SL and reinstall it, by all means. This ie what the telephone help line advises. it makes no difference, you still crash, but you feel better about it. A bit.

Switch off your wireless link, dig out the cables, shut down your wireless network and connect your MacBook Pro to your cable modem.

You still crash. Go back to a slow desktop iMac, wireless or cable-connected: no problem

And so it has been since client 1.14 was introduced. Do Linden care? Who knows, they make no reference to stability problems with any platform, let alone with the MacBook Pro.

The Lindens don't read these forums, or if they do, they don't give a tinker's cuss about them. These forums exist just to keep us quet as we talk amongst ourslves.

Phone the help lines and keep phoning them, everyone. Make a fuss where we might be noticed. e-mail support@secondlife.com. The squeaky wheel gets the grease.

Find out if your MBP is overheating.

To do this, google for smcFanControl and install it. Set both fans to full speed. Yes, it's noisy; the idea is to determine if it's crashing due to overheating.

Run SL for a while and see if it's stable now. If it is, your Macbook Pro is overheating and crashing due to that.

Watch the actual fan RPM that smcFanControl reports, too. If it never gets up to what you set it to, your fans may be defective, in which case it's time for a trip to your Apple dealer.

Good luck!

that might be a possibility. I bought an extra cooling device yesterday ...at first I crashed a couple of times with and without freezing !! but then managed to stay on for a couple of hours.

additionally to what Zorin suggests...I found out that in the first series of MacBookPro the heat conductors had to be replaced. So this also could cause overheating. Im having that checked as soon as possible and will report back.

in my case it is not over heating.. I can leave my comp for a whole day and get on it at night and play for 5 mins or less and it will still crash. I have had my mac for about 3 years, should I give up on my mac and try a dell or gateway?

Each time my system freezes and i have to turn off my laptop and then turn it back on the display doesn't show ... this is yet another problem keeping me from playing second life. I am so frustrated =/

Problems

What makes me get a bit crazy is that after calling for help and sending in crash reports LL still dont admit there is a problem.

Sumfin interesting
05-30-2007 06:24
Yeserday i was fiddling around with my settings and sum how got rid of the Lag and my pausing issues.... took me ages to figure out how i dun it becos when i logged off then on again the lag and freezing returned.

I found that when i logged on, if i untabbed "ripples" then re tabbed it again frame rate would shoot up, lagged dissapeared and i would not get the furious freezing issues..... at least untill i relogged on.

Maybe this will help some of you out there, not everyone but some.

Easy solution to avoid MacBook Pro freezing!!!
06-04-2007 13:11
Better cooling is the key! I have put my MacBook Pro on a small stand (actually. I am using two pencils!:-), so the air circulation is way better now. You can buy special cooling stands in the shop. I don't know if that will work for anyone, but in my case it stops my comp from freezing.

If anyone is still having the freezing issues, like Loki suggested, turning off "Ripple water" seemed to work for me. It sucks, because the water is now ugly, but at least I'm not freezing anymore.

It's in preferences/graphics detail.

Try it! See if it helps you all :)

Macbook Pro problems possible fix
06-08-2007 07:46
I have tried many options on fixing the hard lockup with the Macbook Pro, after taking some suggestions from Loki of installing the first look browser and turrning ripple water off, the problem has not shown up in the last 3 days of running SL, I am going to turn ripple water on and see if it returns or not but if it does not the first look brower might hold the fix to the problem.

I could be completely wrong on this, but I have a feeling that there is a slightly faulty graphics driver for certain ATI cards bundled in with OS 10.4. My iBook was always able to run SL fine, and my iMac runs it great in WinXP/Boot Camp. However, in 10.4 I get horrible system lockup issues accompanied my graphics issues.

The iMac is an Early 2006 Core Duo 2 GhZ, with a Radeon X1600 graphics card. I have noticed graphical glitches popping up not only in Second Life, but in everyday applications sometimes, and particularly heavy in 3D-intensive games such as The Sims 2. Something in SL seems to bring out the worse in it, though.

Of course, over on the Apple discussion forums this has been brought up by many people, with no attention paid by Apple, so who knows what the case is. It could be Apple, it could be ATI, it could be SL Viewer..until the developers figure something out I suppose we're all at their mercy.

This worked for me

I was having the same issue, my MacBook Core Duo would crash all the time, for no reason, sometimes just opening the inventory or even when i was sitting completely still. Updates didn't make any difference, i installed MacPilot, OnyX and all kinds of diagnostics, etc. Every time I'd have to reboot the whole system. I was afraid it was going to kill the HD.

Last night, i unchecked the Enable Vertex Shading option under preferences>graphics detail, and I played for hours and hours, no crashing. I went to laggy sims, changed clothes..the whole works.

I can't even tell a difference in the detail, myself. Hope this works for someone else, too.
