Oh, we're ALL having vriants of this prioblem.
I just hope it IS possible to download 1.13.

NB In my case, what seems to trigger it is when I am typing quickly into an IM or a general chat box.

Same problem here....and it's getting worse. Used to be able to stay on for an hour before it would do a system freeze. Not it freezes every 10 mins.

Last time in 1.14 it completly took down my system...had to reinstall the OS. As least then I could revet to 1.13.

Now we can't even revert to 1.13 which is a bummer, I bought a beefed up graphics card just for sl and now it doesn't even work.

COME ON SL PLEASE FIX THIS PROBLEM!!!!

Or at least let us use 1.13 till you can.

i have that problem as well...i downloaded this new client on wednesday and it crashed on friday for the first time. then it crashed again several hours later. so i tought, why is this?why didnt it crash on wednesday and why didnt it crash on thursday? so i wondered if it had something to do with the cache? mine was set to 1.5 GB, so that could explain it a bit. anyway i cleaned the cache and reduced it to 250 MB...the system was just fine, until...suddenly - freeze. so maybe clean the cache every time before logging in??? maybe its not cache related at all? i dont know...but it appears strange to me that it works for one or two days just fine and then freezes the system every few hours...

a possible workaround...
04-28-2007 04:40
I wondered why my macbook pro started freezing two days after first installation of the new client and then every few hours? Maybe its got something to do with a file that gets overwritten, when installing it. Maybe some kinda cache? Anyway...I reinstalled it today and so far (several hours) no freeze :-)
So maybe try to reinstall SL every day? Please give it a try and report back...

sort of a work around
04-30-2007 10:37
Tried the cleaning of the cache and that worked for like 10 mins before I crashed again...but I also tried the reinstalling SL and it worked....so now I have been reinstalling it everyday and it's working.

Kind of a pain in the a** but at least I can get my sl fix :-)

Hopefully the Lindens can come up with a better solution soon!

Workaround
05-02-2007 03:38
YES! If you reinstall it every day, it works! I have to trash all SL. The programm, the folder in application support, everything...then reinstall...once a day....prevents from freezing.

Will they admit there is a problem?

We are now in the Second version of the client that is causing the system lockup problem, I have not seen this problem listed as a known bug or problem. I wonder LL is doing anything about the problem does any know?

Just bought a MacBook 2 GHz with 1 GB RAM and 80 MB HD, running OS X 10.4.9. The 1.15 SL Client won't even launch on it. *Sigh*. Glad I still have my Mac Mini. Oh well, the MacBook is primarily my mate's computer anyway. Would have been nice to try it on it though.

What happens is that I launch, the hand icon blinks about 5 times on the toolbar, and then it crashes and goes away.

Admittedly, this is also using an Airport Extreme wireless connection over a high-speed wireless hub. Haven't tried it yet on a hardwired 100 Megabit Ethernet connection.

Bugger-all, dear Ninja, bugger-all... so far as we know. of course they could be sweating blood but, apart from some vague stuff about improving stability, and some self-congratulatory specifics about solving 1.15 crash problems which are simply untrue (read all the forums, generic as well as Mac), they are not actually telling us what thye are doing, in language we can understand.

Bug Fixes
05-08-2007 06:39
They do have some bug fixes they are working on posted but not one thing listed that is being worked on is the crash problem the Mac book pros are having. I can run it fine on my Mac Pro and my PC but the Mac book Pro seems to be a problem. It would be nice to see this problem listed as a known bug at least.

what Macbook Pro is having the issue? is it the Core 2 Duo ones that are? My Core Duo Macbook Pro is running SL just fine.

I don't know if this is exclusive to MacBook Pro. My old-but-good dual G4 tower used to perform fairly reliably in SL until 1.14 and definitely 1.15. Now I'm lucky if I get 15 minutes without a complete system crach.

I've tried dumping the cache, reinstalling the app a few times. Same thing as everyone. I'm really hoping there's a fix forthcoming.

I have been having this same problem since the last update also so I went back one version with no improvement.

I think there is another issue involved but who do you talk to about this?

me too!

Just for the record.... my mbp core duo 2.16ghz has been doing the system freeze since 1.14 as well, needing a hard reboot sometimes every 10 minutes. Same symptoms as everyone else.... often seems to happen in the middle of a chat or IM exchange, but not always. I have tried everything i can think of and no joy. It seems pretty specific to SL too. I edit video on it for my day job and have no probs capturing video as I surf the net. SL just borks it. Re-installing doesn't seem to help either. my instinct says it's a graphics card problem hence limited to the mbps... will try tweaking the settings in prefs and report back.

Mac Pro, Dual Dual 3.0, ATI x1900 512mb.

Ever since at least 1.14 SL locks up consistently, usually the entire system and have to hard boot.

Even had it occur under XP in Bootcamp, once.

The lockups you all are experiencing are only while SL is running right? You're not getting random lockups just having SL installed?

Not just mac books
05-21-2007 05:08
I have a fairly new iMac and I'm having the same problem.
Core2 if that helps.

poor thing crashes hard too, I have to restart my whole computer, but it doesn't seem to happen to me nearly as hard as some people here. Just once every couple hours.

HI all, I remember back in the days of the first look viewer the Linden State managed to get the viewer working REALLY super on my iMac 24" core2 duo with 2GB ram and a 1.7MB download connection. It was just before they released it as the main client that it started to go wrong for me, and gradually its been getting worst and worst.
For me i dont crash, for me i just freeze for sumtimes up to 5 mins before regaining control again. It reminds me of a bug The mac viewer used to have last year where if you tried to turn left or rigtht you would freeze making it impossible to move.
How long it will be before this lack of efficiancey in the Mac viewer is dealt with... who knows...
On a different note, i used bootcamp over the weekend and found that on the PC viewer, my graphics card in my iMac allows my avatars shorts to flap in the wind... how nice.... Untapped potential we all have in our macs....
