I am experiencing every few minutes (like every 3 or 4 minutes) a client freeze of approximately 30 seconds. Then it passes and goes back to normal. This happens in all client versions I've tried, including Windlight.
This is on the MacBook Pro 2.4GHZ 8600M GT. I am no longer experiencing the system crashes but this issue is making SL use very annoying still. I have tried halving VRAM use with no effect. Any suggestions? Framerates are decent when it's not frozen.
I can post process samples while frozen. And already have on JIRA.
I have 4GB of RAM, which is PQI brand. It is listed as being to spec. I don't know if the brand of RAM could affect it, at all, but I don't have performance issues with my other applications.
My hard drive is a 200GB 7200RPM Hitachi drive, which I would think is fast enough to keep up with SL's caching...

Well, your machine has a higher spec than mine (I have a smaller, slower HD and half the RAM as you) but is otherwise the same, and I don't have beachballs very often at all.
No advice, other than it SHOULD run better. Best of luck.

I've seen it happen... it seems to come and go. Sometimes I go days without this happening, then other days in the same areas it happens all the time. I just chalk it up to SL being SL... bad programming, but no competition to make it lose customers and fix itself.

Happening to me more and more over the past week. Sometimes I have to forceclose and reopen. Since it is getting worse I assume it is something in the client/server code, I dont knwo though. It is highly highly irritating. No other progy does this and my machine should have NO problems keeping up either.

NVIDIA seems to be the common culprit. Uh, and Linden Labs.
Pretty graphics features of Windlight, Voice... all nice things to have but... when will we see a stable client, if ever?
I can still barely use SL in this state, with it freezing for 30 seconds every couple of minutes. Crashing.
It even still locks up the system, just very rarely now. What the heck, LL?
JUST MAKE A RELIABLE VIEWER. Is that too much to ask?
If web browsers crashed and hung every few minutes, I doubt the web would have ever taken off really.

From: Gistya Eusebio NVIDIA seems to be the common culprit. Uh, and Linden Labs. It's gotta be driving them nuts, Linden, I mean. Look at this forum alone: people with seemingly identical machines, running the same OS, same version of the viewer, and yet one person has "constant crashes" and the other has near perfect performance. I have an NVidia card (GeForce 8600M GT) and have very few problems with SL. I can't assign the blame to that part.

I have an NVidia card (GeForce 8600M GT) and have very few problems with SL. I can't assign the blame to that part. Well apparently it happens on the new iMacs, too, which are based on ATI. (see this thread: /164/4f/241821/1.html#post1905044) So that kind of eliminates NVIDIA as the culprit, after all. It's got to be either something with OS X, or, something with how the Lindens have ported SL to OS X. Since I don't experience these sorts of issues even in other 3D-intensive programs, I would tend to think it's LL's fault. And they need to fix it! -=GE=-

Yup, have this happening here as well. I'm on a Mac Pro, 8-Core, 2.8GHz, 6GB RAM, 4TB HD and the Nvidia 8800 GT. OS X 10.5.2
I have not had a single app go weird on me on this machine yet except ... you guessed it, Second Life in all it's 5 or so viewer tastes, none of which seem to work like they should.
I'm doing Machinima and record events in SL and this is absolutely ridiculous. I've long left SL as a way to spend (waste) personal time but my business is still happening here once every now and then but not for much longer, that's for sure!

Hi there been lurking a while...
This surely looks hardware driver related to me. I rarely crash on the new RC client. It might crash once a day or so, and thats with hours in world. In the past it was more frequent. Prior to windlight the standard client was a memory leaking monster. My system: P4 @ 3GHZ hyperthreaded 2 GB Ram PCIe X16 ATI HD2600 XT - GPU - 800MHz, 512MB DDR3 @ 1.4GHz, catalyst 8.2 drivers, with catalyst AI disabled. Windows XP Home 8MB DSL - static IP My client settings are all ultra @ 1280x1024 full screen, draw distance @ 192 (i tweaked it for FPS). Some of the most beautiful water, skies, and foliage.

Same Issues here...

Not very useful to have a nice view if I can't move or do anything... Ever since upgrading to 1.19.0 (5), I get locked up in this thing every few minutes. I'm on a G4 (mirror drive door) 1Ghz Dual proc w/ 2GB RAM and 500BG of storage with an ATI Radeon 9600 Pro (64MB). I try back once in a while now, but spend no time in-world anymore. Client's un-usable. I came to explore this, and see what use SL might have for several non-profits I work with, but it's become a complete waste of time. No value, I'll try back next year. Maybe.

yes, freezing happening here too with older (2.66 GHz) and ATI Radeon X1900 XT and in the midst of machinima capture... and it seems to have been happening in the last few weeks. Are all you freezing people running Mac OS 10.5.2 with the graphics update? It's been incredibly stable for me since that upgrade.

same here.... constant freezes or total system shutdowns on a 2gb Intel iMac running the latest system 10.5.2. with an ATI radeon xt1600 card. the last few days have been especially bad. annoying? I'm past the annoying part and on the brink of calling it quits altogether. the constant ongoing instabilities in sl are just plain ridiculous.

freezes + crashes save me money!!
04-02-2008 06:07
From: Haravikk Mistral Why aren't you using the update? SL brought my system down without the graphics update. SL crashes my system big time with the graphics update. It makes no difference. On a positive side, freezes, crashes, constant lag etc. save me money!! I WILL NOT SPEND A SINGLE DIME IN SL ANYMORE UNTIL IT'S BEEN FIXED. It just might speed things up if enough ppl do it.

Freezing
04-03-2008 23:56
I'm having the same freezing issue, on latest Mac and graphics updates.
It DID get significantly more stable as of the graphics update, but the .19 windlight viewer is what triggered this new issue, without a doubt.

I seemed to have resolved this for my iMac. I not only downloaded the latest drivers, downloaded an update for Quicktime, and I also reduced my bandwidth in Preferences/Network. I took it to just below what my ISP provides. For some reason, this seemed to help.
Now, if only I could start a friends conference without crashing...
I'm running the latest regular release.

It's been ever since windlight came out and nw that the reg client is the old release candidate thee is no escaping the spinning wheel of DOOM! I Can't function at all in SL hardly cause of it and it's driving me insane. I am about to update Quicktime. Maybe that will help? *fingers crossed* BTW, I am Running on a...

its logistical hell, LL + Apple + Nvidia are working together to solve these and it is improving.... I have 3 macs (day job) and they all gradually improve, albeit slowly, on SL performance since a year ago. Please go to jira.secondlife.com and find a ticket most similar to yours if you are having issues. And no im not an employee. The only mac i'm having an issue with on the latest WL release (i believe they re at 1.20) is freezing on my mac pro (dual quad + 8800), however i refuse to lower the graphics settings to lower than fully-maxed, so its cool. if i turn off antiailiasing, i get minimal freezes. when i bought the mac pro, it was completely unusable, so theres an improvement somewhere. Theres so many little driver issues, please file bugs and help. reason being , i think Nvidia is going to try to focus mostly on the 9xxx series if we dont let them know that there are quite a few customers who arent going to settle for that. Im not willing to wait a year and pay anothre $300 for a card thats only 15% faster, and no one with a laptop can upgrade their video. Please file officially at jira! going thru LL is the best possible way for a mac user with an nvidia problem to do this.

I have the same problem - every few minutes getting a 30 second beachball lock-up making things unusable. I've had to revert to my work's XP laptop with integrated Intel GMA graphics - but it's working more reliably than the Mac right now iMac 24" 2.16Ghz 2Gb RAM Nvidia 7600GT 256 OS X 10.5.2 SL RC 1.20.0.84331 If I have the activity monitor running the lock-outs are shown as 101% CPU on one core which sometimes flips to the other core before calming down again so this seems to be a crazy endless loop thing, probably a resource clash or something along those lines. The only encouraging thing is that it is now quite repeatable so hopefully LL are getting it too...

The exact same thing's happening to me. Lockups every few minutes or so since the new viewer/havok 4 upgrade (the previous viewer was fine for me). Working up in my skybox I seem to be fine, but if I'm at home things get worse, especially around peak times. These lockups are sometimes followed by uncontrollable movement, ie, start walking and can't stop. Same as a dodgy sim crossing, I usually endup somewhere under the ground or I crash. Very frustrating! I have put this in a JIRA already as well as submitting a ticket... http://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-2358iMac 20" 10.4.11 2.16 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo 2GB ram 256MB ATI Radeon X1600

Don't know how many here use the JIRA system, but I received this update today for this issue... https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-2358Mac Client Freezes or just won't respond for a while every 10 minutes or less. From: someone Just stepped through the current viewer in xcode debugger and seen the culprit for the regular hangs for about 10seconds or so..., the regular sent stats call getCurrentRSS() which loops over all available memory with a loop, which takes around 1000000 calls into kernel space for a MBP with 4 Gigs of RAM, dog slow..., someone must be really clueless...
Just changing llviewerstats.cpp around line 695 like this fixes the periodic hangs: agent["mem_use"] = 100.0; //agent["mem_use"] = getCurrentRSS() / 1024.0;
as this is debug info anyway there is no reason to inflict those slowdowns in release builds... This issue is as yet STILL unassigned, but someone thinks this is a very easy fix. One to keep an eye on!
