Windlight 1.19.0 (80044) on iMac 10.5.2

I've been doing a test of Windlight on my iMac24" this weekend under 10.5.2 to see how it works (128Mb video using recommended settings). And it does, more or less. At first I saw greatly increased frame rates, and then as I continued to use the client, frame rates dropped down to their normal, sad levels of 3-4 fps.

However, the reason for my post is an unusual effect that seems to happen periodically. The client completely locks up for 3-6 seconds (with spinning beach ball) and then returns to normal. Quite un-nerving, especially if you are in an important conversation. The lockup occurs every 2 or 3 minutes. I used to see this happen when rotating the view, but now it happens even when no on-screen changes occur.

Has anyone else witnessed this lockup?

Windlight or not... I've seen this happen. I haven't found a way to reproduce it on my machine reliably. Occasionally it'll start doing it, and it'll keep doing it no matter what I do. Other times I log on and stay on for 10 hours or more (wether at the keyboard or not) and its still running fine and doesn't do the freezes. I did notice before it was happening a lot, and i went to another area and don't remember seeing it again for a long time. I thin it might be something related to the servers. I complained about it to someone before in SL, and they said theirs was doing the same thing, and they were on Windows.

Yes, those freezes are in both the regular Mac client and the WL Mac client... a real pain! I'm using the latest of each client.

This isn't Mac-specific at all. It happens to everyone running SL on any platform, from what I understand.

SL is great, but we all know it's far from perfect. This is just one of those imperfect things.

What i have noticed is that the First Look viewer works great if you use smcFanControl 1.23
All you have to do is give the graphic card a bit more cooling and lower your video ram settings. Client never ever freezes or crashes again for me.

The Windlight viewer does lock up with intervals of a few minutes and stays unusable for about 20 secs. After about 15/20 minutes the viewer crashes. Increesing fan speed with smcFanControl and lowering video ram do NOT help at all. Windlight viewer is unusable for me at the moment;-(

Oddly enough...

I actually prefer WL to the regular client. I get a little bit better performance and more importantly, a little better framerate. I have no explanation for this except it feels a little better to me. I have compared it to both the 1.18.5.3 client and the same client with Barney Boomslang's Nicholaz viewer.

I do use smcFanControl but don't know what effect that plays because my computer turns into a space heater without it.

If anyone has any clues why, I'd appreciate it. I'm curious but, frankly, not complaining. It has also been pretty stable for me...*knocks on wood with a sledge hammer*

The only other quirk that might have anything to do with it, but likely not, is that I run all the SL apps through Xslimmer.
