03-30-2007 08:59
The same keeps happening to me: except that its a TOTAL system crash requiring me to restart the m/c.
You said you've reinstalled the previous client. How do I do that please/

can't say anything yet. good to know that i'm not allone, so it's very likely that my/our problem is sl and not hardware related. please look into your system console and there into system.log. now search for tramps and look if you find a line that looks like: "hi mem tramps at 0xffe00000" (without the quotes). thats the only weird console entry i can find. anyway, this seems to be written to into console on every reboot, so i don't know it its sl related.
you can try the following thing as well...delete your sl-cache files, but not by selecting delete in sl, but going to: users/"your user name"/library/application support/second life.
delete the whole folder "second life". reinstall sl and restart. i guess that it might be cache related as well. if its a big bug in 1.14.0.0 we can only hope for an update...please report back...thanks.

to reinstall the previous version, just download it: http://s3.amazonaws.com/download-secondlife-com/SecondLife_1_13_3_2.dmg
now mount the image and copy sl into your application folder. done.

03-30-2007 12:56
Well, I followd your advice to delete the cahce files from User/user name/library/app support/seconbd life... but didnt dare detelete the whole folder. there was stuff in there going back 18 months! Just the cache folder. Hope that's right.

deleting cache files

Well, it crashed even faster; about as soon as everything had rezzed into place.
I'd trashing the new client and reinstalling the old one the lin to which you kindly provided me.

Old client reinstalled: no more crashes!

Just as it says in the title above.
All's well until they make 1.13.x compulsory... and forget to fix the Mac bug..

its working most of the time on my Macbook Pro, for many hours... but once i did have a total system freeze which was uncommon... had to restart the whole computer. I had tons of things running, and i was just clicking back over to the SL window from Safari, and I had the beachball spinning a few minutes then .... locked... nothing on the system would work except moving the mouse around... couldnt even get the CMD+Option+Esc to bring up Force Quit window..... was odd, but 95% of the time its been running fine.

i know. 1.14.0.1 has the same issue...just sent another bug report. please do the same. I reverted back to first look version 1_13_4_59748. Again, today - frozen. Now I'm back to first look 1_13_4_59558. I'll report back if there are any problems with it. By the way. First look 1_13_4_59558 works as fast as 1.14.0.0 or 1.14.0.1.

Thanks for the reply...

yer wha?

I haven't a clue what you mean about a console command I'm afraid Angela.

Well, the new upgrade is no better, so I'm going back to client 1.13.3.2.
I had Linden help advice to turn off avatar nesh in advanced graphics if I wanted to use 1.14.x, which is stupid; I couldnt see anyone avatar at all, just their name labels.
I looked for new graphics drivers as advised: but ATI dont list any for the Radeon X1600 installed in my MacBook Pro, so I assume its the most recent.
Lets all keep complaining to Linden or they'll make their next upgrade compulsory and then where will we all be? Locked out.

I'd like to add that I have no problems at all with the 1.14.x client on my mac book pro 17" (with the latest updates). No crashes, and no system freezes. It works better (and faster) than the 1.13.x client for me....

Some do, some don't
04-05-2007 17:59
My wife and I have virtually identical machines, her's freezes regularly, mine has yet to do so (finger's crossed). Macbook Pros, 2G in my machine, 1G in hers. I'm going to try reverting her and see if that eliminates the problem for her. The 1.14 client is better on my machine, at least so far.

I'll note that her machine is 256M of video memory and mine has only 128M.

Well, it doesn't seem to be related to video memory size...I know a friend, who has a macbook pro with 128 megabyte graphics card and it freezed as well. I talked to a guy, who owns a 17 inch Core 2 Dou macbook pro and it never freezed so far. So it might be a problem of the first generation core duos only? Please report back...

Video memory size may affect it?
04-06-2007 05:51
Preliminary results are that changing her video memory setting to 128 has stopped the system freeze/forced reboot, although SL is still crashier than usual. This is preliminary - any confirmation or refutations?

Not first-gen Duo issue
04-06-2007 05:54
I have one of the first-gen MBPs, "machine model" in system profiler is listed as "MacBookPro1,1" My wife's is several months newer, though I don't know if it's first-gen or not.

I had the system freeze when selecting 128 MB in SL - settings as well... Guess it might not be a workaround...

Summary of the problem (SL freezes computer)
04-06-2007 08:34
Here is my summary of this issue (I hope the Lindens read this forum, but I will post this to them as well). Please add your comments or notes.

SL freezes system

Only seems to affect MacBook Pro, OS 10.4.8 or 9, running SL 11.4.0 or 11.4.1

Symptoms
1. complete freeze of system, except mouse movement. Cmd Option Esc won't allow quit process.
2. can't log in (freeze at SL screen)
3. other crashes more typical of memory issues

Notes:
memory and video memory do not seem to be an issue
11.4.1 adds a new method of organising the cache in Library/Application Support

Conclusion- a video card issue seems the most likely as this happened with some PC video cards. Unfortunately there does not seem to be a patch for the ATI Radeon/X1600
