it worked... sort of...

I had a fairly large delay between when the updater started running and when it started downloading, but I got the new client. Unfortunately I'm not able to log in. I'm getting a "despite our best efforts something unexpected has gone wrong." I deleted the application and any library and cache files and tried manually downloading the application again, but that hasn't worked either.

I'm getting the "Despite our best efforts" cannot connect message as well. (Tried the preview grid version of SL and it connected fine.)

I had no problems logging in with my MacBook Pro.. just tried =) I did download the standalone installer...
I noticed vertex avitar programs as well as bump mapping won't work still on the MBP (and by association I assume the intel iMac, MacBook, Mac Mini intel...) But everything else works now! Including rippled water.... Will test more tonight. |

I managed to get the DMG file promptly, and drag-copied the files from the mounted drive to replace the old ones. As with everyone else here, I get the "despite our best efforts something unexpected has gone wrong." error! I was attributing it to a 'traffic jam' of people trying to log on after the grid came back, or was fearing my Mac had finally slipped below the minimum possible performance threshold. Now, it sounds more like an installer bug. Has ANYONE successfully logged on with a Mac, using this update? If yes, what are you running? (Hardware and OS and video card)? EDIT: *Looks at post above* Add to the above: Do you have the Intel or the PPC cpu chip in your Mac? Well, on my Mac Mini (Original 2004 PPC Model), OS X 10.3.9, built-in 32 MB VRAM ATI card, with the latest drivers for OS X 10.3.X, I get the above login problem. ![]() Bug fix for the installer? PLEASE? _____________________

I got the dmg file fine and logged in as well but performance has taken a hit. I'm running an iMac with the G5 processor.

The MacBook Pro is intel based. I can't speak for the PPC machines anymore, as all I have is Intel Macs...
On my Intel Mac it works fine and is Universal. (There may be a bug in the UB installer??) [Edit: I can't speak for performance, I am at work and only logged in for a min.. but at my house in SL it seemed smoother when I did a 360 and all looked OK. Same slow loading textures, but that's expected.] |

I downloaded fine but can't log on, I get he same "despite our best efforts " message. I deleted all SL files and did a clean install, still get the same error message. What a drag. At least I know from these other posts that its not just my computer.
I am on a 1.67 GHz PowerBook G4, 1.5 GB ram, ATI ? video card ATY,RV360M11: _____________________

I downloaded the installer from here....
http://secondlife.com/community/downloads.php That worked fine Once the DMG opened I dragged the app into the applications directory. That worked fine I put the app onto my dock and clicked to open it. That worked fine I clicked the connect button, here it gets interesting... It went all the way in to the process, progress bar, clothes downloading, even see the last place I was standing talking with my friend, then the 'ting' sound and that so sad message..."Unable to connect to Second Life...etc., etc." I tried at 12:08 and 12:15 PST/SLT, it could just be that the system is not up yet but according to the website several of my friends are on, I don't know if they are Mac or PC. I also tried rebuilding my permissions Still no luck I am running Mac OS 10.3.9 on a Dual 1 Gig G4 Quicktime 7.1 DSL 7.5 mbs down and 1 mbs up GeForce4 Ti 4600: AGP VRAM (Total): 128 MB Vendor: nVIDIA (0x10de) Device ID: 0x0250 Revision ID: 0x00a3 ROM Revision: 1105 Tried again 12:30, still no luck... _____________________

Same here, getting "despite our best efforts" message when trying to log in, though the updater worked for me.
PowerBook 1.25 GHz PowerPC G4 64MB VRAM, ATI Radeon 9600 Mac OS X 10.3.9 (with all the latest Software Update done) I'm glad I'm not alone. Yay! *clap clap* *goes back to bed and cries* |

Lindens Answer...We're Working on IT...when it will be fixed, they don't know
05-24-2006 12:34
Just called Customer Service. There is a problem with the MAC version, but as we are the lesser or the two OS's we're arent getting the priority. They are working on it but when it will be up and running...either 5 Minutes..5 Hours or 24 Hours...as they said, you can't rush a masterpiece...LOL, some masterpiece...flawed from the start.
Call customer service if you want, see if you can get a better answer than me. Good Luck |

This is a first: The Mac Intel version working and working better than the PPC version!
This is not a first: Linden releasing an untested new version. I mean... something simple as -logging on-! That said, 'm sorry for you PPC people but I am sure it will be fixed shortly. |

Brent has answered in the other thread.
/111/91/108758/1.html#post1053405 Looks like it's compatibility issue with 10.3.9. Last time something like this happened they fixed it very quickly (though it was way minor a problem than this). Let's not give up hope. *goes back to bed again and cries some more* |

This is a first: The Mac Intel version working and working better than the PPC version! Got to agree! This is the best update for Intel Macs. The fps is way up and everything moves much smoother and loads faster. Sure hope they fix the PPC version. But like Molly, the auto update was broken so I downloaded manually and then everything worked fine. |

Never "update"....
05-24-2006 17:06
always, always, always.... delete all of the client files and folders in your Mac OS, and only then download a fresh copy of the client.
The Mac client is so simple. Does not hide files and folder like the Windoze version. Bottom line, delete all SL files and start fresh. Have never had any of the problems described on the Mac Discussion threads. |
