Mine must have downloaded automatically.
I've found a solution here: delete the files in:
~/Library/Application Support/SecondLife/cache/
Now SL works fine.

Like everyone else here has experienced, the new SL install began crashing on me right before the new startup screen appeared. I deleted the cache files with no success, then I deleted the entire SL folder in Application Support, still no success, until I did a complete restart of my PowerBook G4, and now the SL log on screen has appeared. I was able to successfully log onto SL once it reopened from the Wed. morning maintenance.
Maybe this will help someone else... restart after clearing cache.
FYI, my situation was a little unusual in that shortly before this I had to wipe my entire hard disk and do a reinstall of all software and upgrades from 10.3.7 to 10.3.9. I had lost all the previous contents of my hard drive, but had transfered the files from my older iBook onto my 1+ year old PowerBook G4, so the Cache files that made me crash were older also I believe.
