Is anyone else unable to run SL? I DLed the new version today 1.12.3.4, and I now crahs before I even get to the new (and reportedly great, though I've never seen it) splash screen.

I'm on a MacBook Pro using OS 10.4.8. Heeeeelllllppp!

I connected fine, but I used the autoupdater and did not download the new version directly.

I downloaded the new version directly also. I did a clean install, deleting all previous files. I crashed for the first few times. Restarted my computer, crashed 2 more times and now its fine. Go figure.

Mine must have downloaded automatically.

I've found a solution here: delete the files in:

~/Library/Application Support/SecondLife/cache/

Now SL works fine.

Not for me.

I tried deleteing the entire application support folder and still I crash at the same place.

Seems like there are two threads about this, and lots of people with the problem... but it might be more usefull for contributors to say what OS and memory you are using instead of just the screen size.

For me it has worked fine on:

- 2.1 GHz G5 iMac, 512MB ,OS-X (10.4.8) using auto-install

Edit: Also works fine on:

- 1.33 GHz G4 Powerbook, 1.25GB, OS-X (10.4.8) using auto-install

me thinks this is a "user-error" problem perhaps. :)

Edit 2: Ha! :D I Knew it!

Additional info for Mac users - when you open the client .dmg file you downloaded, you used to be able to run the client directly. This doesn’t work anymore and will crash the client. You are supposed to follow the instructions and drag the file to the Applications folder and run it from there. A fix is in progress for this.

Any fool knows not to try to run a program off a virtual disk when the instructions says to actually install the thing.

Yes, any fool DOES know not to do that.

Nice try. I have never in my life run something from a .dmg. Of COURSE it's in my applications folder.

I still crash before the start-up screen.

The Linden suggested fix... does not work. I already installed it this way, but figured meh maybe I made a mistake. Clean installed SL. No go. Still crash.

Yea... I know. I emailed support. Couldn't hurt I suppose. I also put another thread in Linden Answers, I figure they should know their fix doesn't work, if they don't already.

I talked to someone in SL support. They admit that the problem is not coming from trying to run from a .dmg (Like anyone would), but can't offer any solutions yet.

They did request I send a support request, (http://secondlife.com/community/support.php) detailing the problem, so that they can get more info on what exactly is happening. Perhaps the rest of you could do so as well.

Not exactly good news, but at least they're aware of us.

Cross posted on the other New Install Crash thread.

Spoken to Linden Lab
10-25-2006 17:02
I just spoke to Tech Support and they don't have an answer yet, although they said that they are working on the problem and aware Mac is crashing. They don't have a timeline yet for a solution, but they will stay working on it until the problem is solved. Thus let's eat our fingernails and take some tranquilizers, (Im trembling of not having my 2L dosis).

I'm on an iBookG4. I originally updated my previous version upon login and it ran fine....HOWEVER.....every time I logged in afterward I had to download the updater. Time consuming and aggrivating. I asked LIVE HELP why this was the case and they suggested I start over and download the whole system again from the website. I did. Well, now I can't even get to the launch page. I'm crashing every time. I've changed the colors from thousands to millions...nothing. This is frustrating and I hope they fix the problem.
I am paying money for service I cannot access.

I know what the bug is related too now.

if you

a) nuke your prefs and nuke the SL binary. (use spotlight to search for second life and remove everything you find
b) Download and install a new SL binary
c) Open SL, it should open just fine. You'll noticed it has a new fancy login screen.
d) Login to SL.
e) Zoom the window
f) Logout of Second Life
g) Quit SL
h) Reopen SL and it'll crash on opening.

What's I think is happening here is the new spiffy login screen doesn't like the window being above a certain size. I'm not sure how you set the window size (perhaps in the prefs file?) but I'm going to experiement and see if i can get it to open at 800x600 or something and see if I can get it to load without crashing.

Edit: Here's the error that happens.
Second Life(22593,0x178dc400) malloc: *** error for object 0x16b94bd0: incorrect checksum for freed object - object was probably modified after being freed, break at szone_error to debug

Found it.

In Library/Application Support/SecondLife/user_settings

edit the file settings.xml

look for these lines at the bottom:

<!--SL viewer window height-->
<WindowHeight value="600"/>

and

<!--SL viewer window width-->
<WindowWidth value="800"/>

If you change them to width = 800, height = 600, Second Life will no longer crash on start.

So at least we have a workaround until LL decides to fix the client.

Also, I just noticed that if you have the login screen up and hit the Zoom button on the window. Boom , instant crash.

Echo, have you reported this to the Lindens?

This does have some resonance with me...since I have a 23" Cinema Display I have SL running at that screen size.

I am going to try your suggestion as a test but I do not see it as a work around, that size screen does not get them off the hook with me.

If they introduced a new screen element then that should have been one of the first places they looked.

I have had no problems with client crashing on opening.
my crashing problems is related to a much broader issue, one shared with windows,
new release crashes constantly wile playing second life.
Horrendous lagging and packet loss issues. Rezzing issues, all of which is related some how.

Echo -- Running SL maximized on a 1600x1200 screen on a Mac Pro. No crashing issues for me. Viewer height is like 1082 and width is 1600.

Bino, just got notice of your post. No the Echo solution did not fly.

But much happened since my original post.

Before the Linden re-re-release of the SL client, I think 12 something dot.6, I tried a Rachel fix...that being creating a different OS X user and installing SL there, that worked.

Another interesting solution I did not try was editing the XML XUL file to get rid of the offending and offensive opening screen which was clearly the trouble but the Lindens were loath to admit to.

The final solution was that they released the last client version which I installed on my original partition and user account, it worked. Of coarse it was 2 weeks later and no credit for lost time.
