From: Aimee Weber I could be wrong but it sounded like Ben was trying to say no, but politely! I suspect Linden Lab would prefer to keep their nose out of these kinds of scenarios. That's how I interpreted it as well. It was done with great tact. From: someone However, this shouldn't stop YOU from setting up some kind of committee for the purpose of bestowing well deserved recognition onto Second Life citizens. To make honors given by such a panel worth their weight in prims you would have to make some careful organizational decisions. 1. You must convince the population at large that your award really DOES represent excellence. 2. You must convince SL's population that the process of earning your award is free of politics (the bad kind), bias, bribery, and favoritism. 3. I would recommend giving out a well crafted trophy or medal. Think the "Nobel Foundation of SL"! Your organization wouldn't pull much weight at first, but if you play your cards right as time goes on it could begin to earn the respect and attention of the general population. Brilliant. I agree with every word. Personally, I would like to see an award given to those who make great contributions, who are not rewarded financially (in US$ or L$) or through other traditional channels (ratings or dwell). Personally, I think someone such as yourself, Amy, would be well suited to create and give out such an award. You're well known, relatively moderate, and quite intelligent! We could have the Weber award for positive contributions and the Weebler award for the opposite. What do you think? ~Ulrika~

I propose that Huns Valen should have his Account Type string set to Defenestrator.
I also propose that the last Friday of every month should be Silly Hat Day.

Give an award to someone who called me an alt for so long and no matter what I said that I actually put part of it in my signature for a bit? To someone who didn't and still doesn't care about making me miserable? Um . . . no. coco

To someone who didn't and still doesn't care about making me miserable? Um . . . no. coco She's accomplished a great deal both in-world and in the forum. Her skill in animation and her willingness to help the community are worth mention alone, but Neualtenberg is and was a revolutionary idea in which the citizens were empowered to maintain and govern their own territory. It should be the model for future community-run development. In the forums, she has been the ultimate rational dissenter and a tenacious wit. No matter whether you agree with her politics or not, you must recognize that she has many accomplishments worth acknowledging and celebrating.

I already dole out the "Aimee Award" in the form of hugs

After some thought, I think it would be in LL's interest to knight certain players who have made great contributions to SL. Perhaps they should consider handing out a few lifetime (or one-year-free) premium accounts to great contributors every year.

Why do you need recognition from the people who make the technology platform? Recognition from the residents is all that matters.

I agree! An award, be it Linden given or given by the residents of SL, is in order. Seeing as how SL has been around for a few years now, maybe a ceremony involving 2 or 3 (or more) of those who have made considerable contributions (including Ulrika) would be a good start. I'm not exactly "up to date" on all things political in SL but I do recognize the efforts of those who are. I don't think it should be something that is done with any regularity, fearing that anyone wanting to "get recognized" would then try to manipulate the system to get the award. The award should be something like a lifetime acheivement. An honor bestowed on those who deserve it. Of course not every person in SL is gonna "love" the the person being honored. Let's face it, it's a political arena and some people just don't like being challenged.
My 2 cents.

I thought it was cool that the Lindens flew in a few resident game developers to the 2005 Game Developer's Conference in S.F. this year.
Perhaps if they want to show recogintion, they can help a few players like Ulrika (who's Thriller video is the only reason I tried SL) get to the SL User Convention that's gonna go down in NYC this year.

From: Satchmo Prototype I thought it was cool that the Lindens flew in a few resident game developers to the 2005 Game Developer's Conference in S.F. this year. Exactly! From the virtual-world perspective, as a government, they could recognize citizens in SL (awards and premium accounts) and from the real-world perspective, as a company, they could recognize individuals in RL (flying them to conferences or meeting with them). It seems like something that they're already doing. ~Ulrika~
