Well, I was reminded while watching a TV show on the world wars and it came to me that the SL groups are setting their selves up for one. With all the big armies like SBS, Interpol, the Merczateers, and some other ones that I cannot remember right now and a bunch of other smaller groups and armed forces making all sorts of alliances with each other, that is exactly how the world war started. what if one group plots to take out another group, the other group's leaders are being shot at, they call for backup, that backup group is also getting shot at, they call all their back up, then those people call their backup, and so on and so fourth until all of the armies and armed forces of SL are fighting each other. JUST LIKE WWI lol. The master scripters of the group will get developed newer and newer weapons for their armies' and more people will be getting blasted up into the air and killed until one side has had enough or has exhausted all its recourses. Or they can strike an armistice (hey that’s a last name in second life!

The problem is super weapons.
There's no requirement for strategic acumen and tactical prowess when anybody can use a weapon with auto-target, one-shot one-kill, and the ability to push the guy out of the sim. (There are also weapons that can bring down a sim, but those can get you banned or worse.) It's not much fun having a huge wargame in SL unless winning requires skills. |

I have to agree there. There wouldn't even be time for an army to even call for backup. Basically, the arms race in SL has come to a standstill with the creation of a certain weapon, and many others like it.

Goreans versus furrydom! It's inevitable! Doomsday is upon us!
If war happens in SL, it'll be a war of words and subterfuge. Weapons are useless and easily countered in SL, and sim crashing only hurts the perpetraitor (i.e. banning). _____________________

Would WWII happened if God just stepped in and said, "Enough of this crap" and then the Axis just...disappeared from the cosmos?
That's more or less what would happen on SL if someone or even a group of someones decided to go full balls-out ballistic with in-SL weaponry against the rest of the population. I mean, how much different RL would have been if someone could have just canceled Hitler's account (since it was tied to his CC afterall) and prevented him from accessing the tanks and planes of his armies... Besides, there's combat sims. Have fun storm'n the castle. |

See, what you need in SL is the Japanese concept of the noble enemy and the old British concept of good sportsmanship. If the rules of engagement are followed as a point of honor you have a cultural framework for using restricted capability weapons like my dual Seburos in small unit actions against enemy forces and installations -- even their home city like Nova Albion or Neualtenburg. : P
The other thing you need is a benefit to winning. Like being able to place a Laughing Man icon or something in the sky 200 meters above a defeated enemy base or town and it stays there for a week, so everybody looking at the big map can see who pwnz! |

The problem is, as long as there are people who play to win without honour as a concern (and who logically eliminate honour from the whole process of gaming as explained on that site) there can be no sportsmanship. In a place like SL where free reign coding is possible there will always be some asshat who says "I can figure out how the protocols work, I'm going to make an instant kill area bomb that won't kill me so my team wins all the time."

If you believe it to be the only possible course of action, then war shall manifest itself in response to the power of your faith. However, since few people seem to share this belief you will have to exercise caution to find likeminded individuals with strong resolve, or else the war will be internalized, exist solely in your mind, and consume you instead.

Wars happen because of incentives - something is to be gained (or believed to be gained) by a nation's people, government, and/or ruler by winning and/or participating in a war. If there wasn't, then wars wouldn't happen.
What are the incentives for war in SL? More specifically, what is the best possible outcome for someone who wins a war in SL? _____________________

That's a neat bit of math there Marker in your sig. >D
On the serious side, the only conflict I've ever been aware of is Goreans versus Furrydom. Goreans don't like furs in their sims because it "breaks the roleplay" (dispite the fact that part of the furry culture is as into dom/slavery as Goreans, or more...). I have no clue what furs have against Goreans personally, but I suspect it's the majority who prefer freedom to slavery that get their fur on end over the roleplayed way of life. If there ever was going to be a conflict of meaning, it would be between these two "factions" of people. _____________________

That's all I have against some people who happen to be Gorean, and I happen to prefer non-human animal-themed AVs. If there's an actual conflict going on, I missed the memo, but that sort of interaction might be what you're seeing. |
