I now have a member who is in the =F.B.I.= group , a member of State Police, and member of the Second Life P.D
He wants to see a Second Life Supreme Court formed.
He wants to form a player government, and have player made laws, judges and juries of players.
Five more people are needed to form a forum for a group called "Government in SL Discussion Group". It is open invitation, if you are inworld and want to join just look it up in the Group tab and join.
The forum will be available to discuss what governments in SL would mean , what sorts of powers they would have, what the results of player government in other online games have been. Would a player government in SL be a monothlic one or would it be divided along sim lines? Could player governements impose property taxes, income taxes, sales taxes, import taxes, export taxes, inheritance taxes and how would they collect? How can you have a real government when you can't actually kill anyone or put them in jail or torture them? Would player governments establish licensing requirements for the professions, so that folks would have to pays fees to become licensed scripters, builders, and strip dancers? If pooling wealth and working together is what some folks want to do, why do they call it formaing a government when it sounds more like starting a business? All the sorts of questions that come to mind when one thinks about trying to have a government in a virutual world would be approprate in a group called Government in SL Discussion group.

About the Circle A anarchist symbol
04-05-2005 04:58
The circle A anarchist symbol is visually more recognizable than a black flag symbol.
I don't associate it with any particular group or brand of anarchism. It has no special meaning, MaryLee. I found it easily on Google images, the nice picuture I found of the woman carrying a waving black flag with an A on it was too large to use as a forum icon.
As to my view on player government in SL: if you mean do I think that people should be able to pool their funds and purchase land where they will play roles with titles like "President" and "Congressperson" or "Representative" then certainly . Peoople who want to engage in role playing games with their own property are certainly free to do so now and welcome to do whatever turns them on. Whether they choose terms like "Congressman" or "Dark Lord" is no concern of mine.
If you mean do I want other customers empowered to remove me from use of the program or take my money and property then certainly I do not want such a thing. I pay the Linden Lab company to use a part of the processing power of their computer network and to connect my computer to it. Why would I want other players to have the power to take that from me? If I fail to honor my contract with Linden Lab, Linden Lab can perform whatever action they deem fit according to the terms of the Community Standards, TOS, Forum Guidelines, and other documents outling the rights and responsiblities of Linden Lab and it's customers.

Six more members needed.

From: someone The state police group is just a bunch of griefers rolling around SL reporting people while griefing...you're off to a good start. Ignoring other people's property rights through some form of griefing is exactly what I would expect from a group calling itself "State Police". Ignoring individuals rights is exactly what I would expect from people wanting to form a player government. That a group allegedly known for interfering with the enjoyment of customer's time in SL would have members wanting to form a player government seems extremely logical to me. With a player government formed, they could do even more aggravating things on a larger scale, and no one could stop them because they are the government! An open discussion group allows people of all sorts of beliefs and behavioral styles. I was reporting one I found somewhat amusing.

From: MaryLee Marshall What is your opinion on governments in Second Life, Suez?
Why the choice of the Circle A symbol for forum avatar? I associate that with young people who think freedom means putting grafiti on buildings. You seem to be saying that you want to keep a government forum from being seen? Doesn't that seem to be a supressing people free speech? If you want to know what Anarchism is all about check here ( link )... its a whole lot more than streetpunks with spray cans. A whole lot more. -Ghoti

From: SuezanneC Baskerville Those forums are for people to discuss questions about things which are essential to SL and which already exist. So, because a traditional 'government' does not exist, you dictate that a forum should not be created to discuss possible player-run entities of varying degrees? What if people have questions about running a common interest community? What if they are interested in setting up a small player-run governing body for their own sim? I think this type of forum would be beneficial - even though I'm not interested in being governed by anything more than the TOS. Just because it doesn't benefit me doesn't mean it should be scrapped.

Yes I do this should not have been created, it in no way is something that is esential to SL operation.. it belongs in group forums

Why must we have it only be in group forums to cover all the varying types of Polysci discussions? What is so wrong with having a separate forum?

What is so wrong with having a separate forum? there's already one for N'Burg... why wasnt one started for this, why must it be in the main forums, it has nothing to do with the day to fday operation of SL, its simply what a few are striving for and shoving it down the majoritys throats

Look, let me make this clear, so you don't think I'm playing the side I am because I like government: I am NOT for player-run government. Period. However, I do realize that there are people out there who are interested in it to varying degrees. If you read the forums, there has been a lot of discussion over the last few weeks/months about government of one form or another, so obviously there was interest in this subject and it appears to have warranted its own forum. The N'burg forum was for *that specific* group. Any discussions in that forum were probably dealing mainly with N'burg and its charter. This forum is open to any/all types of conversations - not limited to one specific government setup, such as N'burg. That's why I think it's a good idea to have this forum.

OK ok... I think it's not a group forum because it's not a group. That's my guess. Funny though, I actually feel less like it's being shoved down my throat when the Polysci discussions are here vs. in the General forums.

One for any special interest group? If so the General forum will be a wasteland and wee will have page apon page of main forums

From: SuezanneC Baskerville I strongly oppose the creation of a forum of the same status as Building, Scripting Tips, etc. on the topic "Government". I do not want to see the word government on the forum main page. Second Life has reached it's currrent high state of development without a high level forum for discussion of government, so the evidence to date suggests that such a thing is not needed. Toy LaFollete is exactly correct, if those with a special interest in "Government in SL" get their own high level forum then others with special interests would have every reason to expect get equal treatment.
The desire to discuss the need for or the lack of need for government in SL is a special interest limited to a subset of Second Life customers. Second Life already has a means for subsets of the customer base with common interests to mingle and talk: they form an inworld Group and get a Group Forum that appears with the other Group forums where it belongs.
The Government in SL Discusssion group is already formed. I will send additional messages to some other Linden employess to make sure that my request for the creation of a forum is being processed expeditiously. Sorry to say this but.......thats total and utter twaddle. It would appear that this is an avenue that Linden Labs feel is a possiblity, hence the forum. AND....not to point out the blindingly obvious but....if 'goverments' were such a bad thing then you'd have nobody to be appealing to right now would you Suezanne

You got the first part right, that's for sure, if "political science" = "socialism"
04-05-2005 22:21
From: Ulrika Zugzwang Given that I create or drive the vast majority of discussions on political science, don't you think that my absence from your group would be conspicuous? ~Ulrika~ "Conspicuous" would not have been my precise choice of words.
