Hmm... Free Pie Day at Rausch... this could be interesting. :D

Seriously though, this question is a bit tangential and off-topic.

And your point? This is the SL forums. It's either tangential and offtopic or its pitchforks and torches. Sometimes one even turns into the other!

How is the question off topic?

I'll agree with Kris there. :D

It's tangential, in my opinion, as it presents the argument "if government then war?" I can't tell whether the poster was serious about this question or not, but I don't think it's a real question for discussion. It's amusing, but it's not exactly relevant. :p

Move along.

I have great respect for you, Jeffrey. I read your posts avidly, and feel a kindred spirit.

Having said (and meaning every word of) that, I can imagine how this might be considered "off-topic", but only from a narrow, pedestrian perspective. IMHO, this could be seen as an extention of "Jillian" (the FPS, PvP paradise, I believe. Please correct me if I am wrong).

Only sovereign nations (i.e., national governments) can go to war. Therefore, someone might ask (with greater or lesser seriousness) about having governments, allowing warfare.

There are at least two answers: literally, "yes", and "irrelevant"

Yes, if you have an area, and you invite someone from another area (or even the same one...civil war) I'm sure that LL would have no problem with that occuring (I'm already thinkng of how to implement such a thing, hehe!) by mutual consent, assuming no "collateral damage".

Having said that, SL is not an anarchy, or even a democracy. It is a benevolent, enlightened republic. As such, "politics", does not mean "sovereign governments". Rather, it means land-ownership, without federal zoning restrictions, such that one can, and may zone within one's property boundaries.

Having said all *that*... sounds fun; Let's *do* it, hehe!

Hey, you don't need to apologize for an opinion. Go for it! I just feel that the topic is a touch "out there" personally. :)

And thanks for the kind words.

in order for there to be a war, there must first be 2 governments.
and something to fight over.

I agree with you, Nashville -- landowners can decide to be any sort of government they like for the purposes of commencing hostilities. And doug, if we're looking for something mutually agreeable to fight over I recommend a titanic clash of architectural styles. The quintessential causus belli in SL. : D

I organized two Style Wars games back in TSO, and all the participants enjoyed it. Participants included architects, builders and creative folks. We were looking for something new, not just another contest. Each of us built a small demo of whatever style we currently found interesting, and soon the builds filled up a maxed out TSO lot. Visitors to the lot didn't understand what we were doing at first, but many kept returning because they saw something new and interesting unfolding.

What we didn't have was all the great shooter scripts and vehicles and typical sandbox funstuff. One more reason why I left TSO. : )

Despite its name, Style Wars was a collegial effort, and we found ourselves cooperating to juggle space and objects so that each contribution could look its best for screenshots on the Stratics forums used by TSO. (The forums were crucial for events like this in TSO, because the game world was divided into cities, and not everyone had an avatar in each city in order to visit interesting locations.)

"Let's Have A War"

[Chorus:]
There's so many of us
There's so many of us
There's so many [x2]
There's so many of us
There's so many of us
There's so many

Let's have a war
So you can go and die!
Let's have a war!
We could all use the money!
Let's have a war!
We need the space!
Let's have a war!
Clean out this place!

It already started in the city!
Suburbia will be just as easy!

[Chorus]

Let's have a war!
Jack up the Dow Jones!
Let's have a war!
It can start in New Jersey!
Let's have a war!
Blame it on the middle-class!
Let's have a war!
We're like rats in a cage!

It already started in the city!
Suburbia will be just as easy!

[Chorus]

Let's have a war!
Sell the rights to the networks!
Let's have a war!
Let our wallets get fat like last time!
Let's have a war!
Give guns to the queers!
Let's have a war!
The enemy's within!

It already started in the city!
Suburbia will be just as easy!

[Chorus x2]

Well.. When you think about it, there're already many smaller, war-like conficts going on in SL already. Prime example? Griefers. It may not be an official, full-scale military engagement, but people fight Griefers all(or at least much of, and not everyone does) the time.

In Second Life you can't actually end another person's life; all you can really do is ruin the one they have. Real wars have bullets, bombs, gasses, and other such things designed to kill. SL has push-guns, "nukes," and particles. Those don't kill avs so much as killing(crashing) the program itself, or driving a person's framerate to nothing.

And.. ...I'm not sure where I'd been going with this, but I agree it'd be great fun to arrange a war at some point. Give people a chance to use their nastiest scrpts in a manner both entertaining AND somewhat less assholish than their typical useage. And when/if the good folks at LL are able to work out what causes burps at sim-crossings, nearly full-scale warfare can become a legitimate prospect. Though... We've still got the limits on how many people can be in a single sim at a given time.. Hm. Anyway, yeah, random musings. ^.^;
