Optimize the code
05-15-2005 18:42
For OS X it is just that the code needs to be optimized. Portable source code is not optimized source code. Robin (SL Programmer) has stated that the object of Second Life is to provide and equal user experience for both Mac and Windows. The utterly horrid lack of ability to even LOG ON to SL much less use the software shows that drastic source code rewriting for OS X needs be done. SL is not getting the best press of late for their shortcomings. This is why as a business you do NOT release buggy code as release software.
I would really like to participate more on SL. As I percieve it there is no equality for Mac users in that the code is NOT optimized for OS X. People do not buy high end computers to have them run SLOWLY. Fix it please or hire those who can. Thank you. As to version upgrades fixing bugs don't promise anything, deliver! Thank you for any prompt resolution to a system wide issue. MY god SL, there is VECTOR processing at end user level in Tiger os x 10.4. Clearly an OS Micorosoft will never be able to equal due to hardware advantages Mac only. So get on the ball. No excuses please. No reason why the Mac OS X client does not work well. |

Well said, Christopher. I believe it's Cory Linden who is the Mac guy at LL, although I know Robin has been know to log in using an Mac in the office.
You might wanna eMail him about this, my understanding is the Mac Client is not a port, but I maybe wrong. ![]() _____________________

Resources?
05-16-2005 05:10
I have to say that I am shocked by the performance of the MAC client, sorry. I have an iBook G4 (1,2 GHz) with 512 MByte of RAM. It behaves *usually* 3 to 4 times faster then my old IBM Thinkpad with PIII 800 and the same amount of memory. People envy me coz of the great performance it has... but:
My SL settings are awful, really, no details, and still I have only 4 or 5 fps where everyone else has 25 fps or more. Sorry, pushing all that on the graphics card is not okay as well. The MAC SL client is far too hungry, folks. PLEASE WORK ON THAT! |

Fps

Press <ctrl>-<shift>-<1> and you will see the data, on top is somewhere how many fps you actually have. Pressing the same again makes the stuff disappear again.
~ Janina P.S.: Is frames per second ![]() |

Everything below 10 is a pain as I can tell. Everything above 25 is just... cool. And I would say you have some sort of PowerMAC there, enjoy, those things simply rock! Will get me one in summer, is really needed due to both, the slow client and all this rendering.

If it's big, aluminum, and holy, it's a G5. 60+ fps is incredible for SL. I usually run around 15 on my G5. I wish I knew what card that thing was running. I want to upgrade my graphics card, but am not sure what to get.

might be os x related
05-16-2005 09:08
know those rent-0-matic signs that you're supposed to be able to click on and get info about the rental space? when i'm on a windows based client i can. when i'm home on my mac using os x, i can't.
home computer: powerbook G4, 1.67GHz, 1GB SDRAM. via airport extreme. i'll let you know the fps next time i can login. now you've got me curious. |

Bah!

There are times where I long for the good old telnet interface. Back when 56K was a good speed. But that's another project.
Haven't upgraded to Tiger yet (The media exchange CDs are on backorder) but one friend reports having 'Texture Cycling', in which the textures of prims, avs, or other things would be black, or corrupted, or lifted from other objects. This started happening happening with her when she upgraded (Hi Su!), and she has since tried to roll back. Anyone else get this problem? |

i have had no problems with tiger. but that problem sounds like she needs to delete her cache file in ~/Library/Application Support/SecondLife and if you have never deleted it you may want to check its size, there is a bug where it just keeps growing past teh max size you set it for. you may save yourself a few gigs of space getting rid of it.

Yeah. I suggested that, and she tried that. But it seems to be related to something subtler. I had her try to decrease the VRAM used by SL, but it delayed, but didn't stop the problem. It seems to be isolated to her, tho, as I've heard nobody else mention this issue.
I have something similar, but that's a known issue, that I simply need to move the SL window back to the main monitor before adjusting appearance, otherwise the av texture is garbled on my av. When other avs change appearance, it's garbled for a bit before the servers update the texture. (Essentially, pointers to texture memory gets juggled a bit.) |

Yes its a G5 - 2*2,5 - 4 GIG memory - ATI Radeon 9800 Pro AGP Special Ed. 256MB Wow! dual 2.5, 4 gig RAM? *eyes popping out* And what exactly does your boss need that beast for? Solitaire? This is probably unrelated, but when I change the texture of a large group of prims (~100) at the same time, they never seem to figure it out and keep switching back and forth between the old and new texture. _____________________

Poor Performance
06-09-2005 12:36
Yes, when I connect with my 12" Powerbook, running Tiger, it is a true pain!
So, I don't really use my mac for SL when I don't ahve to. |

I run SL on my 17-inch PowerBook G4. It has the maximum of 2GB of RAM in it. I bought this one about a month ago or so. It runs OK. I get like 7 FPS in the Welcome Area with my GFX options checkboxes unchecked running in Windowed Mode since I multitask. Sound about right to you guys?
I do have a Windows desktop machine I need to try out further some time. I only used it like a few times for SL. |
