So, zoned and themed sims are getting more popular. (I think there was a thread more or less on this topic a couple days ago but I don't remember what or where it was so appoligies for any redundancy). So, say I had a whole sim (an unlikly propisition, unless someone else was paying the tier ). Say I decided to build it all up by myself into a gorgeous themed community. (You may replace the "I" in that sentance with "you" if doing projects of that sort interests you. Its a theoretical question after all). The theme would *not* be along the lines of anything that has already been done in SL (subburbia, major RL cities, Tolkien/elvish fantasy, Wild West, sexy beach, trailer trash, backwoodsy/rustic, more that I've likely forgotten). What kind of theme would you like to see/build/live in? Ideas I've had: -- Outer space/science fiction. -- City in the sky...could by fantasy-ish, could be a little futuristic -- Saratoga Springs, NY. Saratoga has a very cool mix of Victorian and modern arcitecture and a very big artsy/college town/touristy in a good way culture and atmosphere that I like a lot. -- I know that here are lots of boardwalk/waterfront areas in SL but I haven't seen that extended into residential themes yet. Some Cape Cod/Nantucket theme could go here too. -- Something that I don't really have a name for yet but have toyed with slightly...sorta gypsy-like with wagons and houseboats, sorta victorian steam-engine era, sorta...I dunno, Philip Pullman/His Dark Materials?

i would like to work on some dark forest and jungle terrains but the current alpha overlap tragedy, combined with a the omission of a first person mode, prevents thick clustering of plants to create the effects without using a prohibitive number of prims.
would anyone like to live deep in a forest of tall trees and underbrush or a vine riddled jungle so thick you couldn't see the sky?

Sorta related/unrelated....
I'm considering buying an island and wondered if there are any current sims that are no fly zones. I'm not looking at anything commercial for an island and really don't care about dwell. But I would like to have a unique concept that requires visitors to either walk or drive around the island.
Curious to see if anyone has attempted that sort of thing.

oooh I got one. New Zealand, an entire sim dedicated to sheep. That would surely be a big hit.

From: Schwanson Schlegel I would like to see a "hell" themed sim. Kris Ritter either has or used to have a heaven and hell themed island. I'm mostly sure that she took it down in order to do something different. From: Talen Morgan I would like to see a themed sim that deals with womens buttocks Don't we already have a dozen or so of those? From: Schwanson Schlegel oooh I got one. (and I'd want to collaborate with you on that, if you'd like) Heh. I agree that it would rock. I've already dabbled in Gypsy wagons myself, the results of which are displayed on Le Isle de Montmartre with other people's textures. Out of respect for the island and the group, however, I'd try to do a different model (like HDM-style gypsy houseboats) so that the wagons remain mostly a Montmartre exclusive. I'd also want to integrate such things into the main areas of the sim instead of giving them a seperate quarter/area on the fringes as tends to happen in both fiction and real life. (A caveat though...even if I did find "someone else to pay tier", which is actualy concievable, I've got a lot of RL on my plate right now. So don't expect any projects like this to come from me anytime very soon.)

Curious to see if anyone has attempted that sort of thing. It's a requirement for "game" sims like DarkLife and SimCast and some people are OK with it. Olde London was also a no-fly zone. I don't know if I'd want to acutaly live somewhere where fly was always turned off...or at the very least, I'd want teleporters installed in convient locations. But if it's just a tourist attraction and if the no-fly zone enhances the experience, by all means go ahead.

If it was anything touristy I'd have to come up with enhanced teleport options. We'll see. I'll probably just build a big freakin sandbox with a runway.

Sheesh, Schwan. I had Hell up for nearly a year!
I took it down last month to start something else. Which kinda now looks similar in style to how the watery bits of the new continent apparently looks. Damn you, Lindens!

Greek Island
03-23-2005 01:53
I would love to see a private SIM fashioned after a Greek Island. Mykanos or Santorini are so beautiful. The blue shuttered white stucco houses, narrow walkways, windmills and beaches with a taverna would be great fun to explore.....or maybe I should just go on vacation to Greece.

I'd like to see a Lovecraftian Horror themed area.

^ Great idea.
And I can think of a HUGE omission from SL, given its prominence in the offline world:
Urban sims like hip-hop stylee -- not necessarily just about the music but the culture. You could have it from all around the world, and travel through time like an 80s area with hopscotch and laundry hanging out and breakdancing. There are many stores that sell clothing and bling, but not a full simscape, built grittily and well-constructed but yet truely representing the roots and heart of hip-hop. I'm not talking about gangster stereotypes, but the vibrant lyrical poetry of the mic and the dope rhymes that flow like liquid swords... some of my faves like KRS-One, Public Enemy (someone's got to make the Flav's clock), Rakim and Eric B., Busta Rhymes, Ol' Dirty Bastard (RIP), etc. which brings me to my next point. WHY I WANT LINDENS TO MAKE A NEW CONTINENT NAMED AFTER WU-TANG CLAN AND THEIR ASSOCIATES. (I'd live in Rza.)
On a more serious ethnographical note, there have been several historical articles in New World Notes before writing about the issue of "race" in SL, as well as the odd disproportion and lack of African-American and other ethnic avatars. For a place so diverse in whimsy, it seems odd.
So yeah, big hole there. I have no doubt it's gonna be filled in time, as SL's population increases. But for now it remains on my virtual but indubitably real hopes + dreams.

Make a model city like Tokyo's from the Godzilla movies that you could destroy. A place for all these huge mechs to fight. But I assume the physics stuff would kill the sim performance.

I'd like to see something in one of the New Continent water sims similar to The Raft from Snow Crash, everyone making boats that have walkways build between them, with an implicit agreement not to return the walkways.
I have an obsession with suspended walkways though, as you can see here:

Remember games like King of Monsters, and even the REALLY early C64 game Crush, Crumble and Chomp? Exhilarating. I'd also like to see a Japanese break-stuff room in SL... they have these rooms for pent-up businessmen to unleash their tensions after a hard day at work, filled with replicas of what appears to be expensive antiques and furniture and they TEAR IT ALL UP! w00.
