This is also an issue for US people who don't type QWERTY. i just tried out the game tonight and really like it except for the fact that I type dvorak layout and the game takes it input directly from the hardware. Hence i'm reduced to hunting and pecking to talk to anyone... most MMOs I've tried usually have a bunch of downloadable keyboad layout files and u just install the one you need for your layout. I'm dismayed that this is a pretty old thread... any word on when this will be addressed?

From: someone Originally posted by Ezhar Fairlight I found the general solution for this long ago - get used to typing on US layout Yes, that is a good idea as long as you don't need extra letters for typing in your own language. I can not type Norwegian without these; æøå And since I normally Yahoo while in SL too i need those 3 available when in SL. I think this is something the Lindens should have fixed in the BETA days to be honest. I remember complaining to Jennifer about this on prelude island - she told me they where working on it. Hard work I suppose When thinking of it - any other online game have this problem? Not that I am aware of..

From: someone Originally posted by Cailyn Miller In fact, I'm getting so used to pressing @ for " that I'm now doing it at work too... I'm sooooo glad it isn't just me, Cailyn I also tend to comment my code at work with // too which tends not to work....

Just to bump this !
It's an age old thread, and still, nothing has happened, not even an official Linden reply.
Although windows can be set to different layouts, SL doesn't handle this correctly. All the characters can be found on the keyboard somewhere, but in really awkward positions, and definitely not where the keyboard logo shows.
As a professional programmer, it's VERY VERY VERY annoying to suddenly have to find ()+?<> e.t.c. at unfamiliar places. My backspace key is almost completely worn out !
PLEASE DO SOMETHING ABOUT THIS !!

SL uses the standard US English keyboard mapping. Set your mapping to match, and learn where the keys are by consulting a picture of an american keyboard. Me, I just got used to the US keyboard... I used to use it infrequently, for programming and stuff. The relevant symbols are far more accessible in the US English mapping than in the portuguese one.

Typing on US layout using a laptop italian keyboard is something i find very thrilling. i never know if i will strike the right key to get the character i need !! And being on Sl and MSN too at the same time, for instance, is really exhilarating. Please please please, we poor europen need some support for our weird keyboards !!!!

I can't type : or ; which pretty much annoys me.
Changing my keyboard to US Layout is a workaround. But opens a huge can of worms with other applications.
But i fail to understand why do Linden Labs don't attend this issue.
I for one, refuse to go to a premium account without this issue being sorted out.

What can of worms? I've been using the US keyboard map exclusively since the glorious old days of QBasic and MSDOS. The portuguese layout does not make sense, and neither do its accents or special characters. Don't tell me you can actually be a productive programmer in C or Java using Alt Gr+ 7/8/9/0 to type {[]}

well i guess there are a few workaround and anyone can find/use the one that suits him/her best, but ... still they are workaround and make it difficult to chat and type in general. Is there any reason why european people should not be entitled to play as comfortably as US people?

Making me have to change the document language everytime. And yes, me and at least 3 dozens of other programmers that i know of, use the portuguese char map, without problems, and that includes me. Letting this "minor nuisance" slide maybe ok with lots of folks. But i won't shut up about it.

Well, try switching from a Mac Powerbook keyboard to a PC desktop one and then type something on MSN/Yahoo/Chat lol Eggy & friends loving the US keyboard, that's great if your keys actually ARE the US keyboard But laptops/desktops/macs/whatever all have keymaps on different spots. I'm curious to see the first Linux Beta version. I would bet that the layout will be quite different even when switching over to the same computer Ah, at least I can do LSL scripting in the Powerbook... but not on my roomie's PC. Her keyboard lacks essential keys like () [] So, everybody uses an external editor for programming, I'm just plain silly to use the built-in editor, right?

From: Cailyn Miller *coughs* That will be U.S. standards.. Even English keyboards are screwy (not so bad as other European keyboards though), my @ and " get swapped round during play (along with others, but those are the ones that cause most frustration when I'm scripting). In fact, I'm getting so used to pressing @ for " that I'm now doing it at work too... I do that! lol.. Everyone on my MSN list wants me to learn how to type.. Theres also not being able to do the pound sign (£) in world.. That comes out as a #. That key doesn't work in world either.. lol.
