This is a problem!!
In-world there are problems with my keyboard cause SL only support English standards.
Like to make a Question mark I have to press SHIFT+NUMPAD/
The most of the keys can be found like that on other places on my keyboard but some are just not to be found. It is not such a big deal, but scripting gets really frustrating when i have to copy "=" and ";" all the time.
i would be so happy if this could be fixed!!

*coughs* That will be U.S. standards.. Even English keyboards are screwy (not so bad as other European keyboards though), my @ and " get swapped round during play (along with others, but those are the ones that cause most frustration when I'm scripting). In fact, I'm getting so used to pressing @ for " that I'm now doing it at work too...

I am in London UK and on my keyboard " and @ are swapped. This means when scripting I have to keep that in mind. it is a pain.
SL is international by default as it is an online game. About time the Lindens got this fixed.
Pretty please

Pretty please even though technically the terms of service say that it's supposed to be for US and Canadian residents only but we can overlook that for now, I suppose

LOL yeah we went over that last night in the Town Hall,
Technically only Us and Canadians are supposed to be here so far, legally... or something like that I missed part of the convo... but the Lindens don't mind you "illegal immigrants" lol
it was actually a funny discussion

I think they are reading scan codes directly from the keyboard instead of letting Windows handle it. I notice that there is no "autorepeat" in the scripting windows, so I have to keep hitting up arrow/down arrow if I want to move a few lines. That is consistent with reading scan codes. Maybe they do that so that we can move around using multiple keys at once, i.e. shift+right/left to strafe.

I NEED this too. Even my ()'s are moved and I have no way of making a smiley face !!!!!!!!!! and I smile a lot!! Typing *smile* makes me mistype too much I dont wanna keep smiling like: 8smilre* anymore! Ppl dont even know when I ask a question- can we all agree on this being as good as a real questionmark in chat *q* Hey and not to mention that star - its not located on my star"place" of course but where I have my ( ... sigh... rambeling here as you can very well notice, but this has been great frustration. Since I am so much in SL I now start mistyping in other programs cuz I am used to differnt placements of the keys... *sighs again* I was told when I first logged on - by a Linden - that this was something Lindens worked on... not very high priority on that work is it?? Ok I be nice - at least I get to play and without being a North American citizen... my money was good I take it

Tips for people using non-American keyboard layouts: If you don't mind marking up your keyboard, find a picture of a US English keyboard and mark the locations of the special keys in with a permanent marker. This may save you frustration in the future.

Or, just have someone mail you a US English keyboard! I haev about 2 dozen laying around the house, but, some don't work, some do. Go to a thrift store or something, you are bound to find one, even in your country.

But what when its just not possible to find them - like they don't exist on this one? It might be my extras making the trouble? We scandinavinas of course neeed a couple of extra letters to feel special ÆØÅ Seriously - I have tried about ANYTHING but I just can't find a questionmark or a colon when in SL. James send me two please and the ones without mistypos, I don't like them lol

Lame suggestion - might save time

The charmap binary (from waaay waay back in Win3.1) is still in Windows, and allows you to copy/paste keys and see Alt+<numpad> combos for special characters... might save some time to learn the Unicode Alt+maps for common chars. YMMV, HTH.

I found the questionmark on SHIFT - / A good hint on how to smile: Define a gesture in the Gesture-Window (CTRL-G). Then u can use a hot-key (like /s or F2) to . Kali

Uh... I thought it would be obvious to everyone but ill say it anyway: You can have multiple keyboard definitions in windows and toggle between them on the fly. Just go to control panel and install the US english keyboard definition and you will have access to every character - if you know the US character layout, which you may figure out soon after logging on to SL with it. I changed mine to US english permanently since I hardly ever do anything other than SL at the computer. Without changing to US keyboard certain characters are simply not available.

I found the general solution for this long ago - get used to typing on US layout :)
Ok, I was helped here by the german layout being really stupid and horribly annoying for what I did at that time (UNIX administration), because the "/" was in a totally annoying place (shift-7). I can live without extra keys for the few special characters (umlaute) and at least here we don't use accents. YMMV.

I've done a lot of work with non-US keyboards and frequently resort to using ALT sequences for some basic characters. Basically, you just hold down the ALT key and hit three digits for each character:
; is ALT 059 = is ALT 061 ( is ALT 040 ) is ALT 041
It's a pain, but you do kinda get used to it, especially when you're forced to code that way.
