Would you like to see the Lindens provide a better Inventory System and If yes, please list the features you would like to have.

I would like to be able to select multiple items and be able to drag them into another folder and they actually stay there! When we hit delete by mistake, I would like to have an option that says "are you sure?" (same goes with land but that's another poll i guess) :)

Oh God yes!

Real multiple item drag and drop from folder to folder and from objects to inventory.

Folders NOT opening automatically when you go near them. Nor multiple inventory windows resetting.

Ideally, symbolic links to hold one item in multiple folders (e.g., you have a no copy pair of shoes... you want to wear them with 3 different outfits... you put a shortcut in your clothing folders to the pair of shoes)

Proper inventory searching.

Snapshots knowing they are snapshots and not textures.

My personal wish... shared folders... granting someone access to a particular subset of your inventory.

Better sorting options. I'd like to be able to sort no copy items from copyable ones. I'd also like to sort clothing types. Maybe different flags or pins you can assign to objects to classify them of a certain type, also used for sorting. Maybe even sort by creator, too.

Properties to show what part of a body an attachment is set to.

These are just off the top of my head. I'm sure I could think of plenty more :)

Yes PLEASE... and what Kris said, and more. :)

I'm in big favor of the "symbolic link/alias/shortcut" approach -- it's a pain to make a new outfit, only to find it was taken out of another folder... gah!

I'd also like the ability to NAME a snapshot right after taking it... so one doesn't have to go to right-click, Rename it, all that.

Shared folders is an interesting idea, with proper permissions sets I could see that being handy... a sort of mini P2P implementation within SL... this would be VERY handy for builders working on a single project and using certain base objects, texture packages, etc.

Again, I am highly in favor of a little Search bar that lets you search not only by name, but by other criteria as mentioned. Even taggable keyboards like Gmail's Labelling system would be an awesome boon.

We have information.

Now it's time to organize it. :D

What Kris said. I want to know who voted no opinion! Everyone I know is desperate for the inventory system to be changed.

About the pins thing...

What I was thinking, since it's something I've implemented in some of my own UI's and applications, is that you would get say 6 different colored flags that you can name as you please, and assign your objects to one of these from a dropdown in the object properties.

So for example, you might choose to use it to denote Vehicles or Weapons, or equally you might say 'all clothing with red pins go together well as outfits' or 'all black pins are formalwear'. Or 'all green pins are snapshots of me' or 'all yellow pin items are related to my inworld business' (Ed: enough examples already. They get it. sheesh).

The point being that you have an extra and totally configurable method of categorising, sorting and searching your inventory beyond whether it's a texture, clothing, object or whatever, and beyond just what folder it's in.

The current inventory system needs an overhaul.

three things:

i'd like a more static window rather than folders opening when i pick something up or my hovers over them more than half-a-second

an overall search feature would be nice and i'm an old dos monkey that knows how to name items with precursing metatags in only eight characters ha ha ha

finally, and most important to me, i want the texture selection list to reflect the folder system containing my textures in the inventory window.

I hope the Lindens see this and at least assure us that inventory help is on the way :)

Somebody in another thread mentioned having the ability to download inventory contents, organize it offline, and then re-upload it when neatly organized. Even if all you are organizing are meta data, that would be a huge help and would most certainly get my jellies jumping :P.

And, though many consider Microsoft to be the Evil Empire, its Windows Explorer feature set would be a wonderful model on which to base the SL inventory system.

One thing I'd desperately love to see is logging! I want a log of every item given to me while I'm offline... who gave it, item type, and name of item. I spend an insane amount of time just trying to figure out who gave me what in the half a dozen or more inventory drops I get on an average day. I'd also like a logging of what I gave to whom and when.

Yes to all of the above, but also, is it just me or has anyone else bought a new outfit lately, only to find that every item has a weird new kinda shirt icon ? whether it's a skirt, shoes, socks etc.

Tis annoying !

I filed a bug report but don't know if it's just me <sigh>

Same. I didn't know if this was intentional or what... I noticed it happening with some of the Olde London period costumes. Hmmm.

Hi,

I'm trying to centralize all feature requests in a single webpage. Could everyone who has expressed an opinion in this thread please consider adding your votes and feature suggestions to http://manageddreams.com/slvoting ?

As a Mac user I'd like to see the options that come as standard in OS X Finder. For those of you unfortunate enough not to know it, it does all the drag and drop you could want, loads of ways to multiplely select and so forth.

The things is does that are really, really nice include three different ways to view the folder hierarchy, and a side panel that lets you drag and drop for fast access to a list of folders you prefer. Working on (say) textures for Olde London - drag a copy of the relevant folder into the sidebar and then, wherever else you've been working in your finder window you can just click, or drag and drop to it and voilĂ  neatly stored away in the right place.

This isn't radical technology, except the ease of setting them up and taking them out once done makes it a joy to use.

In other items, in order of preference:

Multiple select - God YES!
Texture window reflecting my structures - God YES!
Texture window showing library textures too please....
Aliases to other places/items - YES
Items showing what they attach to - Yes please
Pin labels - yes.
Renaming snapshots at point of taking, and them knowing they belong in the photo album, and being able to import them as snapshots - all yes too.

Someone mentioned naming snapshots as they're taken. I'd like a default name consisting of the date, time, region, and coordinates where the shot was taken. If we could have that, I'd rather *not* have a name dialog pop up every time I snap a photo: I'd rather keep on snapping.

One place I *would* like such a dialog, though, is when creating a new folder. Since you never actually want a folder named "New Folder", there's no point to *not* prompting for a name at that point.

Plus all the usual stuff: multiple drag-and-drop, tooltips with the description, symbolic links, a "Detail view", etc.

The ideal solution, of course, would be something like Mozilla's XUL/JavaScript/plugin combo: allow the users to adapt and extend the SL client interface, and trade skins and extensions as they see fit. As with the world, so with the client: give the tools to the users, turn them loose, and see what they can come up with.

I can't help but feel frustrated at the moment because although 75 people and still counting, have voiced strongly that they would like to see and need inventory upgrade, I noticed that one of the 3 people that voted NO was a Linden.

I would love to know why? and does this mean that we are just wasting are time in hopes for an inventory upgrade? :(

overhaul!

As that person above said (dev or something) we need these post where they will be viewed by those who might be able to change things. Make sure you go there and voice these great ideas!

I would hope they can make it work a lot better with some time and thought, and we won't need to download and sort to get the job done. but if no change DL could beat the current system.

great topic MJ WTG!!

The least they could give us was a free text search on our inventory. So not just the first letters of an item, but also any other part of the name.
Like: you're looking for your hot tub. Hmmm. Nope, nothing on "hot". OK, try "tub"... Hmm, again... nothing.. Nope, the thing is called Free Super Hot Tub.

Search also should work on all folders, not just the ones you have open. I spent half an hour last week, looking for a lost item. I had to go back to the store to find it's exact name, then open ALL my inventory folders, and then type the name... I must have dragged it to the wrong folder at some time...
