From: Snickers Snook True but anyone with 10k inventory is going to be running $L through it in some fashion. Again, I think this whole thread may be solutions in search of problems that no one can really prove exist. Yep. A recent LL comment was that they believe about 80% of the files on the asset servers aren't in anyone's inventory at all, or even referenced in other things like scripts, that it's just garbage. They actually have a cluster of machines dedicated to finding what in there might be safe to throw away. Limiting avatar inventories won't do much at all for that.

From: Gumby Roffo Im sure this may have been raised before, Im not sure where as there are a multitude of locations I can post a request for changes to SL . But as the topic mentions I have been wondering how to either get more folks in to SL while moving the usage stats to something useful.
Bots do have some uses as has been discussed many a time, so banning free accounts is not the right way to go. Mainly as it will kill off the new resedient that wants to try before they buy in, I was one of those and had to research deep before I even purchased my first L$.
But if there was some way to put a KB limit on new accounts( read "free" accounts) without having to kill them off totally I think there would be more positives in that. Perhaps improving the current newbiee library with some better skins and tools. Therefore negating the requirement for them to have a vast inventory.
It would make life easier for mentors , knowing that each new AV already had the tools and notecards required to start them off enjoying SL. We would only have to advise them how to find the tools that they have and explain how to utilize them. This would also remove the occurance of sending a newbie to a " mates" shop to get kitted out ( yes it happens).
It would save on server space ( not that bots use much at the moment) and it would provide another positive to become a premium member. " Extra inventory content can be had and land for the price of a premium membership. Would it affect the metrics... yes initally , would it affect the bottom line... I think you would see an increase in members becoming premium.
Another advantage to this change would be a form of averting the versions of copybot rampant on the grid. As a free or new avatar could only use the available items in their inventoryand not accept or upload any more we would start to see the real purps of IP thieft appear not some borrowed bot/new name that is dumped later.
Griefers would not be able to transfer tools to new generated bots to go about their task ( without a cost) LOL sort of a griefing Tax. And if they wanted those tools well they would have to become a priemum member which then leads on to a ID and payment line for those fun folk.
To wind this off as the thought train has collided with some very nice scotch.
I think this idea many have holes and perhaps huge ones . But after a year and a bit of SL and I have had a bash at almost everything ( except gor ?). Perhaps I should have dot pointed this. I look forward to the communitys thoughts.

PS: Yes there are typos in there just don't trip on them. As a "free (basic)" account holder I I spend $20.00 to $30.00 per month on this "free" game in tips and shopping. I would be upset if they limited me for not paying $9.95 per month just so I can own land. I have no need to own land. I would never be home anyway.

Why have an asset server at all. Most of us have huge hard drives these days. Why not let me download my inventory to my local hard drive and load items from there?

Let's also ignore the "running SL on one computer, then move to another." Where's my stuff?

It's simply a matter of database management. Unused accounts will take some database space, but the entries generally won't be loaded into the database buffer.
If those entries didn't exist at all, they'd take less space in the database, yes, but the empty spots would be filled with stuff on active accounts, which would actually increase the querytime for that database, since there's only so much stuff that fits into the buffer at any one time, so the database would have to be actively queried more often, instead of taking a lot of stuff out of its buffer memory. Dropping something else from its buffer at the same time, which will get re-queried since the entry is connected to an active account, causing a perpetual motion.
If anything, unused database entries actually make an administrators' job a lot easier, since it adds a soft barrier, or a cussion to the resources used.

hey
isnt there a difference also if you have lets say 10k textures at 32x32 compared to 10k textures at 1024x1024 item_amount isnt stored or fetched byte_amount
well as a simowner (lots of textures/sounds uploaded) and scripter/builder i actually have < 4k items in my inventory incl all my shapes/skins/outfits/sounds/textures/and backups - scripts i have backuped to my local hd too
i also use 2 accounts (one male/one female) for testing my combatsystem (cannot shoot myself) this accounts only uses the default items and two sets (Team Red/Blue) playermodel/combatsystem/weapons and some stuff to test permissions actually <1k items
i think its not the problem of premium or not premium its more to have a clean inventory without storing neverused rubbish and yes im a premium with 1024 mainland, my own sim and i have no real problem with basic_accounts exept the wellknown "adultproblem"
