Last night I made an alt and spent a lot of time on Help Island. There were quite a few nice tutorials there.

I can't imagine ANY new player spending the amount of time I spent there reading the tutorials, and I'm a builder! I was interested to read them for the details I might never have noticed, but if I were a new player, I'd be dying to get the heck out of there and start PLAYING.

I think a lot of players - old and new - would like to be able to return to a place like this. It's kind of wasted on just new players.

I think Help Island - or a smaller version of it, maybe - should be replicated somewhere so that everyone can go there. New players, especially, would appreciate a place they could return to, and even older players like me, and the rest of us who are largely self-taught, can learn something new there.

I hope someone at LL actually sees this suggestion. I kinda doubt it, though.

If you want the LInden staff to see a comment you make, you could put in in the Second Life Answers forum, this virtually ensures that it will be seen by at least one staff member.

You can also send forum PMs or email directly to many individual Linden staff members.

I suspect that all or almost all of the specific tutorials you saw are available elsewhere in SL or on the web.

Did you record the exact name of the objects or the names of the creators or any other information that would help in locating them? Video tutorials, scripted objects, where they are, anything like that that would help in finding out where they are elsewhere?

You could IM me inworld and I can look for you if you want.

The building tutorial below was created by [edit] The Sojourner and scripted by[/edit] Cid Jacobs.

a better idea would be for LL to set up a HI clone somewhere in world where people could access the same resources.
Otherwise, HI would become as <dripping sarcasm>useful</dripping sarcasm> as WA.

Robin Sojourner, real name Robin Wood, has a web page with some SL tutorials, at SL Tutorials by Robin "Sojourner" Wood

People have been adding stuff at Help Island lately, I don't know what all is there at themoment.

There's a notecard dispenser by Roseann Flora that gives out something titled "How to wear tattoos/textures".

Blueman Steele has just lately put out a number of notecard dispensers with answers to questions such as "What is a pose stand for?"

I just asked a fellow mentor what tutorials there are here besides the ones already mentioned and they said "None".

I am unable to locate a tutorial by Robin Sojourner, not even after asking for directions.
Doesn't anyone ever make any signs in Second Life other than "Impleach Bush" signs?

There are some tutorial videos on Help Island availabe for anyone to view on the web at http://movies.slvideobank.com .

Actually, some of the newbies on Help Island have been there for days.

I don't have any issue with having Help Island replicated somewhere else on the mainland.

The parrot gave me a kiss!

No, I didn't write down key numbers or anything like that. I didn't want to post in Linden Answers cause it's not really a question, but a suggestion, so I was being good, see, lol.

But the one you showed in the picture, that was one of them, yes.

That parrot is on a number of Orientation Islands but mercifully has not managed to spread it's foul self onto Help Island, and with aid from my flamethrower I intend to keep it that way.

Pretending its Jeopardy.

Instead of saying "I think it would be good to ...." say "Do you think it might be nice to ...?". Then it is a question,

So with regard to the building tutorial by Cid Jacobs, one who wanted to put one in in-world can send arequest to the creator using in-world IM to Cid, or a forum PM might work.

Checking the Second Life Forums Members List or the SL Forum Member Advance Search and making a test reveals that Cid doesn't take emal through the forums link but does take forum PMs, for those who might want to ask about acquiring a copy of the building tutorial. Obviously I make no claims at all about what the answer might be.

The Robin Sojourner texture tutorial [which I believe now is not actually on Help Island at all but who cares, it's all good] is at Texture Tutorials by Robin Sojourner at Benten 22 101 28

Putting "tutorial" into the in-world Find dialog, all tab, reveals a place that claims to have all the tutorial information from Help Island.

What it actually has is the stuff from Orientation Island, including one of those deceitful parrots. This is across the water from the Waterhead former telehub, at Brampton/168/215/31

As for literally replicating Help Island, it is currently being furbished with more objects using the low budget low staff time approach of leaving it buildable and telling the mentors who want to to try to put good stuff for new users there using their own good judgement, with review by the Linden staff. So it has no real plan to the items being put up. This appears to be working well.

As for duplicating the central walkway and the buildings and the free store and such that would just be a waste of electrons. There is no shortage of nice builds in SL, on sites people would like to have visitors at. There is an ample supply of free goods all around.

Help Island on the main grid
01-22-2006 13:12
Sorry to repeat too much of what has been said.. but much of what is on Help Island was on the main grid.

Most of the OI stuff in now you in your library inventory, and you can rez your own stations.

The Japanese house in Dore also repeat all the OI stuff.

The ivory tower and the texture tutorials robin makes are all mainland.

I really feel we are more busy getting all the good stuff on the mainland onto Help Island rather than the other way around :-D

Any thing that I make I'd imagine putting a copy on my mainland school, but as far as a copy of Help Island itself for main-grid'ers.. I'd like to see a second help island for those who miss it coming in, after all the OI is repeated somewhat in dore.

Putting "tutorial" into the Find dialog in-world produces a list that includes the New Citizens, Inc. group headquarters, going there reveals a version of the The Sojourner and Cid Jacobs building tutorial. This is located at NCI HQ at Kuula/23/161/33 This indicates that the tutorial is by The Sojourner and the script is by Cid Jacobs.

I think the shared last name Sojouner has produced some confusion and that there is not really a Robin Sojourner texture tutorial on Help Island,

It's a useful build where Robin Sojourner's tutorial and other items are, I think I'll pay the donation jar five hunded lindens.

Actually, I wasn't viewing the central walkway and stuff as that necessary to duplicate. It just seemed that people ought to have a way to get back to "Help Island" even if it is not THE Help Island.

P.S. No need to post on the Answers hotline now, as Torley has already seen this - so a Linden has seen my suggestion.

I saw a wonderful bird on a wire made by Pyra Extraordinaire!

However, I was not making this suggestion so that people could compile a list of where all the various things found at Help Island can be found online or elsewhere in the game, helpful though that is.

I was suggesting a duplication of Help Island somewhere in the game, so that new players, for example, CAN return to it for what they missed or didn't have time for the first go-round.

And so that older players can see what all is in Help Island. In other words, ONE MORE Help Island - without all the walkways and other pretty stuff necessarily.

Yes, this is exactly what I meant. Now, I knew that it was there and what it was and what to look for, yet on finding those two signs, one inviting me to go ahead and get into the game, I'm sure many players chose that, not realizing what Help Island has on it or that they can never get back to Help Island.

Hence, another Help Island. The first one would remain "pure" of griefers, but the second one would just be a copy of the first, so that new players could get back to it, and older players could check it out, too.

Plus, the Help Island itself, it took me quite a while to even find everything that was on it, and I may have missed something at that. Giving people a second chance at it - in the form of a whole nother one - would be a good thing.

I love connections.

One ongoing thing which I've been thinking about is: how can we make better use of the Infohubs as a community? And yes, we have these fantastic help resources on Help Island. As has rightly been pointed out, Resis only Help Island aren't the only that need help. And I could point to several related things like the Live Helpers notecard pack in the Welcome Area under one of the pavillions, that's only handed out if you're a member of LH currently.

Like, and this is wild speculation: what about turning one (or more) of the Infohubs into something like Help Island in the future?

Ideally, we take that space, fill it and nurture it, and give it a place in the community that's sensible, fun--and helpful! Based on a preexisting example that has already solidly been developed, the "mother" Help Island.

So in the spirit of Second Life, I would really like to see what's succeeded so well on HI be replicated elsewhere, and cultured--meaning, adapted to the local environment, allowed to gel over time. There are a few things (including technical things) which have to take place before that happens, and we're going to observe how Help Island develops too. :)

More ideas please! :D

What purpose is served in the Lindens reproducing content created by users already in existence and available to all? A person wanting to use that building tutorial, for example, can do so at the New Citizens, Inc. Plaza. New Citizens also has other tutorials available, more than Help Island does, and is just one such place among others with similar material.

As for devoting an entire sim to it, well, that server capacity is sorely needed for Corn Island, isn't it?

The purpose of making a list of what is there is so that users who want to reproduce it enough to pay for the land to support the required prims can do so more easily.
