"Features" we wouldn't mind turning off

Some features we'd like to be able to turn off (or just throw out)

1) Avatar breathing
2) Foot shadows

Avatar breathing:
- On a lot of poses, it makes you move unnaturally, putting your hands through furuniture, etc.
- When editing attachments, you breath, making your avatar move, making it really frustrating to edit prims, as your avatar keeps swaying "through" them.

Foot shadows:
- They.. don't look good
- They often don't render in the right place. As I type this, my avatar has shadows going through her ankles.
- They don't always render at the appropriate times. You can be sitting on a ledge, and your feet will have shadows.. even though there's nothing below your feet.
- When you take a photo, sometimes there's no way to turn them off. I can add shadows easily in photoshop. Removing bad shadows in photoshop is much harder.
- A lot of the times, I'll click my foot shadow by accident, instead of the object under the shadow.

It would be really nice to be able to turn off the features in preferences, or maybe just throw them out altogether.

Yes! yes! and yes!

Foot shadows suck. plain and simple. if they were actually shadows, fine. but they're not. they're hovering appendages that screw up any realism in a photo.

Breathing sucks too! Especially when you're trying to work with attachments and stuff. Try making headgear made to measure when the top of your avie is swaying around by several inches. pfft.

This gets my support -- apologies for the redundancy, but this has been brought up before and I supported it then too. Surely, it's not too hard to turn these off? At least switches from the Debug menu or somesuch thing that could easily be accessed? Please?

I remember laughing so hard when Fran suggested I "slow down my breathing". *sighs*

Add tool tips to that list.

Death to shadows they make positioning feet & shoes difficult.

Agreed...

I thought we could turn tool-tips off, Strife... though I could be wrong.

I want to turn off whatever "feature" makes my objects pop back into place when I am editing them under high ping conditions.

Wait, I'm confused on this breathing thing. Whenever I edit something that's attached to me, my av freezes still (at least, in my viewer).

I guess this isn't the case if the item is not actually attached, though (ie pose stand)... is that what you're referring to?

i agree with those. breathing is annoying when you're trying to build objects to attach. we can freeze perfectly when we edit attachments so why not any other time? and i'd rather have one blurry dark spot under me or even no shadow at all instead of looking like i stepped in something nasty all the time. and a way to get tooltips on demand instead of every time my mouse twitches would be nice too.

i'd like to be able to turn off tool tips but make it some easy hot key so it's not an ordeal when i want a quick look at some tool tip in the future.

Breathing both sucks and blows.

Make Tool-Tips able to be disabled!

I'm finally finishing my game - and am coming to the realization that since the user interacts with the game via their mouse pointer, they're going to get big-ol' tool-tips blocking their view of the game-board... Argh!

Take care,

A big-ol' yes please from me too. Those foot shadows are really annoying when doing screenshots. I would love an option to turn them off. I agree with all the others mentioned so far also.

yes, and there are instances when your av doesn't freeze even if it is attached although that's a seperate issue. also there's the messed up posses thing. Sitting on my couch in the relaxed pose my arm dips in and out of the arm.

Oh yes! I agree wholeheartedly, no more breathing, no more foot shadows, and turn off tooltips. Or atleast options to turn these off.

With breathing I really think it should LOOK like breathing. Not wiggling. So chest movement. A little not too much.

Feet shadows I agree are annoying. *sigh*

There is a way to turn of foot shadows for doing pictures. ALT+SHIFT+2 (Debug> Rendering>Types>Alphas). Need to have the debug up for it though. Just make sure you turn it back on because it turns off everything with alpha channels. OH, just though of something though. I guess that wouldn't work to well if the subject has prim hair. :O It works for me though because my dreads don't use an alpha layer.

i like the breathing/wiggling...
02-13-2005 19:26
i may be alone in this, but i like the breathing/wiggling...
though i can see why you'd want to be able to turn it off for building, in general i think it's nice to have avatars shift around a bit, not stand there like tin soldiers. er, okay, so i guess i agree that a preference option would be nice for this.

i also agree that an option to disable tool tips would be wonderful. normally i like 'em, but they are reeeeally annoying when you're trying to play tringo!

the foot shadows pretty much never look right, you can get rid of those altogether, in my opinion. ;)

Breathing is ok, though it would be handy to be able to turn it off, I agree.

I think we could ditch the foot shadows altogether. Nice effort, LL, but it just doesn't look right.

Obviously, one ought to be able to disable tool tips. But then, one ought to be able to delete a multiple selection in inventory, too... the list of Human Factors not properly implemented in the client is pretty long.

Hi Neko,

You can delete multiple items in inventory...

hold <ctrl> and left click all the items you want. Then right click and select delete.

What you can't do is MOVE multiple items at a time...

You can copy/paste items from one subdirectory to another using the above method as well but you still have to go back and reselect all the items again and delete them from the original directory to simulate a move. (very annoying)

Yeah, I realized after I posted that I'd mistyped the broken bit. Thanks for the correction.

I stand by my earlier assertion that the interface is clumsy, though. There's a nice book by "Tog" that I think the Lindens could stand to read.

Though perhaps dealing with the clunky interface is part of the maze we rats are supposed to be going through. ;)

Mutiple Inventory Deletes Frequently Fail
02-14-2005 22:07
I agree about tooltips, foot shadows, and the breathing.

The tool text does not appear to be affected by the colors.ini file like it is supposed to be and presumably was before they added the gray tint around the chat and screwed up the chat text colors.

Moving the camera when entering edit mode would be nice to see gone.

One is supposed to be able to delete multiple inventory items but it frequently fails. In many cases in which someone says they'd like to do this or that, they have followed the directions correctly but the program does not perform as intended. Multiple inventory deletes is one of these cases. It just failed for me now inworld, about half the seemingly deleted objects returned.

The monthly debiting of my Visa card account is one feature I would like to see optional. Making this feature optional would probably be especially popular with those who own large plots of land or entire sims.
