I would like a checkbox to turn it off.
I rarely use it intentionaly as much as I use it by accident and groan as I try and make *SURE* I *CAREFULLY* have the right axis highlighted under my mouse (and even then I sometimes somehow get free rotate, it baffles me, really).
Please, checkbox somewhere in the Edit menu.
[ ] Enable "Free-Rotate"

I can only add to this thread that I understood the problem Morgaine describes and think that Chosen hasn't made it very clear why the tool exhibits that behaviour of "apparent randomness". The "free rotate" does not work like some 3D-mice I used (perhaps all work like that, I don't know, I'm no professional 3D modeller ). Instead, it works with variable rotation speed depending on the arc you describe with the mouse. The closest to the center you describe this arc, the more precision you get (i.e. the rotation is slower). I think that the reason for this is that you describe a larger arc but using the same mouse speed in following it - so the movement is slower, and preciser. Using it correctly needs expertise and lots of training, but then again, this is something common to most stuff in SL Actually I also encountered the "free rotate" working this way on other modelling tools, but since I'm no professional, I cannot say that this is the "default" behaviour on all modelling tools. Professionals like Chosen are used to work with 3D modelling tools and so his grasp of the way the sphere-based tool should be used probably do it intuitively. For the rest of us amateurs trying to pass for pros, we would certainly enjoy the ability to turn this "feature" off with a checkbox somewhere (perhaps from Preferences, since, as someone pointed out, the Edit tool is already cramped full with options)
