Get rid of 'Free Rotate'

I dunno if anyone actually uses the 'free rotate' mode when editing objects. For the most part, the only time I use it is when I want to completely screw up whatever I'm working on. I -hate- trying to drag-rotate a prim, then getting the dreaded white circle rotation guide, 'cause then I know I'm screwed. Especially with the not-completely-reliable undo function. :P

EDIT: Okay, okay, don't actually get rid of it. But please let us turn the darn thing off. I can't count the number of builds I've wrecked with that stupid 'feature'. :D

Others may hate it. So be it.

I use it all the time. It'e EXTREMELY USEFUL - especially for postioning attachments, for being quick, and for generally anything I do.

The key, obviously, is to not get the white ring. Simple to say.. nearly as easy to do.. just position your camera view correctly and it will not happen.

Please do NOT get rid of the free rotate function.

The white ring is free rotate. The red, green and blue rings are constrained rotations. Those we like.

Save the free rotate! /me grabs a protest sign. I use this all the time.

I would however like to suggest that maybe the axis rotation 'bars' be made a bit larger. There is an awful lot of whitespace being eaten up by the free rotate part.

Okay.. point taken..it's a terminology thing for you guys.

Still, I happen to use both types of rotations, free adn constrained. Perhaps I have better hand control than some.. perhaps not. I still use both types to my advantage quite often.

I do not want either option to go away.

I think bigger colored rings, and making them light up more when you are over them would help a lot!

I always end up going to free rotate by accident because I thought I had a ring lit up, but actually I didnt... mostly when I am looking at a colored ring from an angle so that it is almost a perfect circle...

Even if the free is not removed, make it so we can actually grab the coloured circles when we mouse over them! I hate having to fiddle with camera angles just to rotate something. Especialy when I wanted the camera in its previous location!

ONE OTHER THING!

I hatehatehate when rotation angles drift! STOP IT! >_< I want 90 degrees, not 89 or 89.1. Or when you move an angle to 90 and another moves to 1 AND WILL NOT STAY AT ZERO NO MATTER WHAT! Also, when using numbers to rotate, let's say I'm adjusting x. Both y and z are moving instead. omgwtfbbq.

Yeah, free rotate has borked me more times than anything else, including the dread "revert digits" type-in bug that usually sends my prims into the ionosphere. If people want to keep free rotate, it needs to be harder to accidentally select the wite ring. My preference would be to require mashing a second modifier key along with CTRL to get the free rotate mode.

And can we PLEEEEEEEEEASE fix UNDO so it actually does something? Anything?

how about we leave free rotate in but make a checkbox that turns it off? i never ever ever want to use it ever but that doesn't mean some insane weird person wouldn't use it hehe.

yes, make the damn rings easier to grab. there are some camera angles where my pointer is RIGHT ON TOP of the ring but it still goes into free rotate.

fix the screwed up thing where you type 90 into a rotation window and the other two change to 180.006 and 0.002 or something. huh? most of the time i have to keep entering less and less incorrect numbers into those other two windows trying to "massage" them into correctness.

Don't get rid of anything, simply give that user the option of not having it by setting a check box in preferences. We like as many features in the client as possible because it gives us choice.

Im afraid if free rotate were to disappear, free drag would disappear too. If that is the case, I have to say no to changing it. Having it as an option, like "stretch both sides" or "select texture" sounds like a good plan.

HOLY JEBUS yeah... something needs to be done. I use free rotate every once in a while but what bugs me beyond all else is when I position my camera to be parallel with the ring I'm trying to rotate (so that it's a perfect bird's eye view) and 99% of the time I do that, there is ABSOLUTELY NO way of NOT grabbing the evil white ring. I will personally be doing my own little happy dance if this ever gets fixed. ;)

hehe... when I saw the thread topic, I thought that we were going to get folks advocating a "tax" on rotating objects; something like llTargetOmega() costing you so many L$ per hour or something.

not a bad idea when you think about it ;-)

Yes please! I hate the free move and free rotate options. I've been here for a year and a half and have never felt the need for free move/rotate. The only times I use them are by mistake. Please make it more difficult to drag stuff around by mistake. Put it as a separate "freehand" editing mode.

Please let's not REMOVE developers' features!

There is a nice function already there in your options - the snap-to grid.
You can enable and disable this at will.

And again, if you make a mistake, control-z always works. It just does not work when you have the CHAT box open, so the worst case is you remove the chat box and hit control-Z. This works. EVERY time.

Then on top of that there's the lock feature.
Then on top of that, you can just edit by numbers.

Leave us builders have our tools. Learn the ways to disable them that already exist. :)

Snap to grid does not affect rotation or your ability to drag other people's objects if you have calling card perms from them, for instance. You do know that its possible to move stuff around without entering edit mode, dont you?

Here's an idea:

Add a checkbox. Default checked. Allows free-rotate. Uncheck it, free-rotate goes away.

Good for everyone!

Yeah, removing features is silly. Adding toggles for features is good, because it lets those people that have trouble with the defaults pick and choose to have a behavior the way they like it.

Even better is changing it so it doesn't need a checkbox!

I am 100% positive people would not have *any* problems if the rings were larger and changed color more obviously to show you what you are about to grab. Just try and pay attention to what happens when you have one of thoose tricky camera angles... the white "free rotate" ball is slightly covering that ring that you are looking at end on!

/me would rather not have to check and uncheck something while editing...

Heck I'd rather "stretch both sides" not be a check box but jut another kind of key to hold down!
