1. I have received those "Can I have a few L$ please" messages in my hair groups, so it's not limited to campers.
It was in response to your "are they really bothering you by being there?" question. I pointed out that they can be an actual bother if they're begging customers for money as well.

From: someone
2. I'm sorry, but your last line was about the most holier than thou thing I've ever heard. You don't know what people can or cannot afford to pay! There are a lot of non-US people in SL and many of them can NOT afford to pay out money (keeping in mind you're not just talking $10USD, you're talking about international conversion rates); not to mention, there are Paypal issues. A friend of mine in England just had Paypal spend 11 days getting a lousy $20 to him.
A computer that can run SL at all and high speed internet are both luxury items, even more so when you're talking about less developed parts of the world. Anyone who can afford the ongoing costs of the former can afford a *one-time* expense of $10, it's just a matter of not wanting to.

Payment options are something else entirely, but even then there is simply no country with a significant presence in SL where people don't have easy access to banks and credit cards, again they just don't want to bother. Those who really can't (debts problems, etc) are a tiny minority and even then there are still alternatives in most cases.

Are you aware of the fact, that credit cards are not common at all in many European countries? The other options left are using Pay Pal (which can be a PITA so I have heard) or giving out account details. If I lived in Europe I wouldn't own a credit card and I would probably not even be posting here, not speaking of buying lindens.

I live in Europe so I think I have a fair idea :).

I didn't own one before I had to pay for online hosting but then I went to the bank, scribbled my name and signature on a few papers and three days later it arrived in the mail. Just because someone doesn't have one doesn't mean it's not ridiculously easy to get one.

In most cases the first year is free as an incentive so there's no cost involved either and if someone is afraid they'll be too tempted to use the credit you get one that has to be paid in full at the end of the month.

Some people might indeed not have one and have no interest in getting one (which is perfectly fair), but then you're back at "I just don't want to".

"I just don't want to" is perfectly fine as well, at least that's what LL is thinking. I see ads for SL all over the website saying "Join now, it's free!". So what's wrong with doing exactly that - getting a free account?

To be honest, I am sick and tired of hearing that basic account holders are some sort of a leech. If they want to keep camping for the rest of their (second) life and stick with the freebe cr*p, so be it. But some of them start to create content, sell it and make a living.

I happen to do lots of camping. Its the only way I can pay for the toys I like to buy from merchants in game.

i dont care about the campers, if they want to waste money on electricty by trying to make money, whatever, its their goat let them blow it

what i do have a problem with is sim usage from this activity, which is one of the major reasons i dropped my premium account

1 piss ant 2048 plot managed to keep ME out of MY land for weeks on end, and when i was able to get on I was not able to do anything on MY land becuase of the server load

so to all you camp hole operators, go F*k yourselves

and to all you campers, get a job already

and to everyone else, arent you sick and tired of paying teir so some lazy bum can make a buck to pay for their toys, hell you might as well just give them 10us$'s every month

BTW is camping on your own land working? I think it is. If you have a small parcel like I do, and you want to sell some stuff, it seems to be worth it to let your avatar sleep there. Besides this is cuter than sitting on a stupid bench all night. *grins*

Okay..... I have read the first and last page of this thread, but here's my question: What is your freaking trauma with camping? What do you care where game members get their Lindens from? Many places require that you have been in the game for more than 30 days before they'll hire you for a job. Some people have erratic hours that they are able to be in the game, which makes finding work difficult. I got lucky and found a job that would accomodate my hours within my first week, and then after a couple of weeks the job literally disappeared. I have another part-time job that will allow me to cover my rent, but not allow me to maintain the kind of life style that I want to have in the game. I don't want to put a whole lot of real dollars into the game, so I might go back to camping part-time.

When I joined the game earlier this month, I went to Hippie Pay Island. I got some great advice and information about the game from one of Helpers there. As a matter of fact, I wouldn't mind becoming a helper at Hippie Pay (if anyone from Hippie Pay is reading this) to repay the kindness and help out other newbies.

As for what people can/cannot afford. My computer cost a whole $309 and it runs Second Life just fine. It's a laptop, so I just take it places that have free wireless access and get on the game that way. Yes, I can afford Broadband, but I live in the middle of nowhere and we can't get it. But, I wouldn't be surprised to find out that I'm not the only one taking advantage of free internet services to play SL. So, don't be making assumptions about what people can afford.

So, lay off the campers. If you don't like camping, don't put camping facilities on your property.

I'm working on an application that has the potential to make camping in SL obsolete by giving SL Merchants the ability to hire and manage real employees instead of campers.

I'm looking for a few SL Merchants to help test and comment on my application. The URL of my application is:

Please email me at webwheeler@websterrific.com if you're interested in helping out. I'm offering one year of free service to anyone who participates in the testing.

Face it... There will always be camping as long as the search results will be traffic dependent. And there will always be campers as long as people have PCs that run idle anyway and/or there are prople who don't invest a second in creating anything to sell and make money on their own... And last but not least: Since LL prefers *more* users to be logged on there will ALWAYS br camping. It's really that simple. It won't go away.

You cant make money in SL as you cant cash enough out per mth! Only 2,500Ls worth next to nothing in $US!

If I had a link placed on an add in SL at clubs etc ppl can link onto a direct outside webcam directly at my home (outside of SL)!

I can bill Masses of ppl directly off their credit cards without SL getting a cut of the action!

That makes sence to me and SL!
Isnt that why SL really clamped down on sex business that directly bypass the SL site once the contacts are made. This means SL isnt getting their cut, so they finally cut down on the sex trade!

And gambling sites can do the same thing! So gambling chips used in SL can be validated and recashed outside of SL in real $US!

Sure the US Bush government agencies want to clamp down on activites run in SL.
But SL can be moved fully off US soil and bypass them altogether!
And with the non stop grid issues SL has there is a market out there for a real competiter to SL!
Isnt that what SL should be really worried about????

If SL were moved to China or the carrabian etc they wouldnt care about Decency issues! But also lose the ability to use that as an excuse to stop activites that ran for ages till SL got greedy that it wasnt getting more of the action, and wanted more of the cut!

You either need to start eating meet or stop smoking so much weed. Your arguments are unfounded and ludicrous. Oh yeah....and blame it on Bush LoL.

Once again......you can't swing a dead cat without hitting an idiot.

Oh yeah....UFOs are real, 911 was an inside job, and the dingos ate your baby. HAHAHAHAHA

So your impetus for removing campers is so you can propose another scam?

Nice strategy -- denigrate a business cause you think you have a solution.

Interesting thread. In my opinion camping is a problem only because of traffic, I think everyone agrees that setting a few camping chairs for newbies in order to help them doesn't hurt.

So, what is the problem related to traffic? The problem is you make the top 1 product of your category, you get the best sales, yet you are listed under your concurrents if you don't set camping chairs. Same for clubs, your club can have the best DJs and drag the most interesting people if your competitiors have camping chairs they beat you.

So, it denatures SL in a way. Personnally I find perfectly right that someones get money camping. It doesn't hurt me at all even if I tend to stay clear of sims too much camped.

Another point that I didn't see in the thread is that campers are afkers. They go to sleep and stay on camping chair for the night. Removing camping (for example by removing traffic) would make them stop their computer hence lowering global SL connections (the given number of avatars logged at the same time). So from 30 to 50k we would have 10 to 20k maybe. UO faced similar issues with their housing, its hard to accept for a company that the number of players diminished.

Finally I think it slowly kills SL. I find it harder to find fun places where you can just chat and relax. Oh there are still some but it's long gone the day where you could find such places in about every sim. It's harder to find simply because the camping places come first in search and you don't know where to look. Some great places have a little campers some none, some plenty , we are on our own when looking for such places. And since many good places remain empty they close one after the other...

Yeah, I've thought about it for a long time and made something (it is presented in another thread not the point here) that would counterbalance it a little. However one thing is clear: traffic has a meaning only because everyone uses it with Search. If nobody was camping would stop.

In most cases campers are obnoxious beggars as well. I personally don't need to be harrassed by endless "Can I have a few L$ please?" cheapskates while I'm shopping. No matter how friendly or polite you phrase your "No" you're in for an onslaught of insults for not handing out free money. The worst was three of them ganging up on me at the same time, needless to say I didn't buy anything nor would I ever consider going back to that store.

I'm pretty sure that's what the Mute function is for. I've never had those probs with campers, but have used the Mute option with great success.

I am still new to SL, but I haven't quite grasped the point of camping, beside the obvious one of making L$ without doing much.

I broke down and bought L$, and promptly spent them all! :-)

Seen as my data usage is capped by my ISP, it would probably end up costing me more to camp than it would pay me, so that is why I couldn't see a point in doing it.

So for now I will buy L$s, paid for with my RL job, but I would eventually like to make L$s, once I have figure out how to build things in SL. Or maybe I will just become a $L rich layabout in SL! :-)

If ppl want to camp, fine, to each their own. But I won't stay long, or go back to, a laggy venue!.

My L$.2

So far, a most fascinating thread....my own feelings on camping are mixed; on the one hand, where's the harm in hanging out somewhere that pays you for hanging out, so long as you ain't there for an inordinate amount of time? It is, after all, the individual landowner's prerogative to set up camp pads or not; if you disapprove, don't use them. On the other hand, I have problems with campers who defeat the purpose of the particular camping setup...f'rinstance if the camping pad is a dance pole in a strip club, don't use your T-rex AV and dress it in a flight suit or a burqa. Dress appropriately; the business owner's purpose in having you model or shake your a** on a dance pad is to attract customers, not drive them away. Besides, in the event of the latter instance, the upshot is that the business will go out of business and disappear, leaving you having to find another place to camp in a dwindling market with the sure and certain knowledge that your burqa-wearing t-rex may have contributed to the bedwindlement....
In the event that I ever set up camping in any venue of mine, rest assured I will have 'atmosphere guidelines' in place with appropriate 'remedies' for wilful noncompliance, and time and frequency limits (if such a move is possible....scripters?....is it possible?).
Whenever I have camped, I have always looked at the venue and at least tried to dress appropriately, right down to the smile on my face. I also try to not overstay my welcome; after all, that business owner has a bottom line to look after. If I could find a modelling or dance job that paid a retainer, I'd drop camping like the proverbial hot potato.
Well, I think I've run off at the keyboard enough for one subject; I'd also like to thank those business owners who have let me gyrate on their dance poles or modelling stands and paid me for it.

Camping, while annoying for some people is a lifeline for others, it helps many people pay their land fees and buy the nice sparkly things that people in SL create...camping money oils SLs wheels.

I'm thinking in most instances you would have to sit for a month solid to make enough L$ to pay land tiers... also, its really not fair to those who wish to camp and can not because of all the bots sitting there for days... I met a guy that was camping and he said he does it to upload textures for his creations.. He doesn't sell items on SL so it was for his personal use..

I frankly dont care, other than if I want to camp I can't because all the spots that pay well have bots on them.. day and night... I know a few places kick you up after a certain amount of time, and I think this is a good idea as well... however, it is a bit annoying TPing into a place you think has active people and then seeing they are all camping...
Also, I tend to not stay in places that people are camping.. I move along quickly so if people are doing this to bring to their sim to make money... they wont get mine.

Camping does, however, provide customers with "free money" that they spend freely. If 30 people camp for a day each, and then they all buy from you, then you can pay your land tier.

If the avatar is camping it should have to pitch a tent.
