Yes, by all means, try...

Because that's all you're likely to get there. And don't forget - the rules there are set by popular demand of the loudest, and most popular members. Those who the admin allows to get away with murder (and I mean foaming-at-the-mouth attacks), while sanctioning those that said group hates for responding in kind. Banning even. Did I mention that the site admin apparently condones his 'lil buddy's tracking of everyone's IP that posts on ------- Names of those being slandered removed by Katt Linden -------------
?

I still like SLU. I have met some good friends there.
But I keep the "Politics, Religion, and Society" forum on Ignore. (Yes - you can ignore entire Forums, so they don't show up in your New Messages.)

just respond full stop.
and i dont even think he has to track ip's. i reckon hes simply told any info he requests.

people might not be happy about the way things are moderated here, but at least we are all equally moderated soviet-style. over there a few members have carte blanche and arent held to the same standards of 'harassment' and whatnot.

Plus, a great group of people who generally treat others well and dutifully take their meds.

....so long as you agree with the group. Otherwise, dog eat your supper. But the same can be said of any forum. As for the moderation... I agree with Nina.

I mostly lurk at SLU, and post occasionally. Of all the forum choices out there, SLU seems to me to be the best, both in activity, and in cross-section of opinion.

From my own observations, the Moderator of SLU goes out of his way to be fair - and nurtures an environment with more freedom for folks to express themselves than they could ever expect from the offical SL forums. My opinions don't always agree with the majority, but I've found that if I post respectfully, I'm treated in kind regardless of my viewpoint.

That said, its a fine tightrope walk between uninhibited free speech for everyone, and keeping occasional trolls in check, and I've seen a small number of folks get banned from posting there as a result. Each time, it seems to me to be motivated by keeping overall harmony rather than stifiling contrarian opinion. Of course, if you're the person on the wrong side of the ban stick, I can see how you'd feel otherwise.

If you're interested in participating in an alternative SL Forum - I'd say ignore all the opinions in this thread, including my own. Lurk a while at SLU, and decide for yourself :)

He doesn't have to but he does. He hosts his forum avatar on his local server for just that reason, and has admitted to it. Anyone who sees that avatar has their IP logged on his server. Not that IPs are super secret or anything, but it does illustrates what sort of person the admin has for a best friend.

And Katt, that would be libel, since it's written and not spoken, except that it isn't because said person has openly admitted, more than once, that he does track IPs.

This is my first post here and I've never posted in SLU but I know many who do

I'd name them but I don't think that's allowed here nor is swearing I understand , but I believe you can do all that at http://www.sluniverse.com as well as have dancing pickles and humping elephants.

Oh ... sorry :o ... Should I have phrased this as a question ?

Forum avatars are not hosted on external sites, if you use one from an external URL it makes a copy and hosts it locally. If you right click on any forum avatar and look at its properties, you will see that.

Images used in signatures can be hosted anywhere, just as they can be here or in most other forums. Signatures can be turned off, and indivudal signature images can be blocked with ad blocking software.

Forgive me. I have lots of negative things to spout about SLUniverse, but I only just realised that such a perilous undertaking is best done through a hastily registered alt.

Look out for the enlightened warblings of Tosspot Sidearse in a couple of hours, I guess. That's how long it'll probably take me to get him off Help Island anyway. :p

Well I guess he said sig then and not avatar, my mistake. But I have seen him making sure everyone knows that he does this - sort of brandishing it like a night stick, as well as speaking for you, quite often. Often in a threatening, hall monitor sort of way. It really ruined the whole experience for me having that guy come into threads and tell us what Cristiano did the last time someone did "this or that" and so on. I'd think it would bother you too, and I know from talking to some others that they won't even go to your forum because of the self appointed forum judge/cop, and the handful of control freaks who side with him.

I also don't like the agree/disagree/thanks etc buttons because they allow for the forum core to bury people under a mountain of agree/groan/disagree. I find the whole thing lazy and passive aggressive which is ironic because your friend and others are constantly whining about passive aggressiveness in others.

Anyway, good luck, and I don't think you're a bad guy. Maybe just a little naive, permissive, and forgiving, when it comes to your friends.

Welcome to the forums, Virtual, you cute little alt you.

This thread is in the "Websites" subforum, so you don't need to pose a question ... that requirement is only for the Resident Answers subforum. And, even there, it is not universally held to, nor is it ever requred for thread responders, obviously... otherwise, no answers could be given! Didn't mean to be pedantic at you, just keepin' it real here.

You are free, I believe, to say the names of those who post at SLU here, if you wish. Though pointless, it is not any form of slander, libel or accusation. It would, however, be an invasion of their privacy, and thus impolite, imho.

Thanks for the clarification, Cris. Even Joshua's forum signature, tho cool, is not so special that I need to trade my IP address for it!

You are aware that anybody is free to do that on any vbulletin forum anywhere, right? Even this one.

You are also quite free to disable signatures in the control panel, if you are worried about your ip address being tracked by anybody with an image in their signature.

For me, your siggie alone is worth keeping them enabled. I think we all need to be reminded now and then :)

I'm not. And that's all well and good, but that isn't my complaint, and I even said above that IPs aren't secret. It's the manner in which he let's everyone know that he does it - just like when he scolds in other ways, reminding us of past disciplines from Cristiano and so forth. It's all part of that ball of wax, and frankly I won't be a part nor recommend those forums until the admin reins him in.

It isn't every poster you know, who goes out of their way to tell everyone they are tracking IPs, and it's especially annoying because he is the admins best friend. It's messed up, and it's not the only thing he does around there to make things go his way. It's just one example of his tactics.

It's not paranoia on my part, it's just one facet of the monster that he has been allowed to become. Ignoring him doesn't fix it for me, because the whole arrangement sours the forum for me.

Anyway, enough said on my part.

Do you scold him when he goes off on people, cussing them out and calling them all sorts of crass and foul names? "Monster", is child's play by contrast.

And this is the exact type of double-standard which prevails over there.

Now I am really out, just couldn't let this bit of hypocrisy slide on by...

Hurry, someone go start a thread on SLU so you can all work yourselves into a froth over opinions you always try to pretend you don't care about yet so obviously do.

"Now I am really out, just couldn't let this bit of hypocrisy slide on by..."

*blink*

Again, you decry someone for bad behavior while calling them a monster. For what? Not behaving on an internet forum in a manner which you like? Wow. Who's the hypocrite, again?

My honest opinion is that the person in question is no worse than any other opinionated person there, just louder. He does rub some people the wrong way. But I find it interesting that his detractors have absolutely no qualms in calling him names or being the same kind of mean they complain about when they criticize him. Nice way to show how much better you are! Or maybe that's just it: You most hate in others what you dislike about yourself. *shrug*

Lol. I disagree with "The Group" on a lot of things. At times, I have written what I wanted to write and watched a thread die with my post as people politely averted their eyes and moved on to something else. Other times, I have had repeated replies explaining my error (they were still wrong :P). No banning, forced marches, waterboarding, or making some poor dog to eat my dinner. But everyone is different, including the degree to which they take forum play seriously and their ability to sense when they have gone too far.

on the other hand, some people only have to post an noncontroversial, on-topic post before they experience personal attacks and such. if you are going to argue that it doesnt happen over there i can only wonder if you actually read the threads.
just wait until a certain couple of people decide they dont like you, and your every post is a magnet for attack and ANY attempt you have a at rational discussion is branded a troll.
