From: Dianne Mechanique What I find interesting is despite the fact that both have been around so long and despite what people said about both being the "natural sucessors" of the LL forum three are still a lot of folks that have in the end not gravitated to either but chose to simple stop posting in forums. Seems to me like the market is still quite open for an LL forum replacement.
I think what people really want is a forum just like this one. All it has to be is attractive yet simple and well designed with enough structure and moderation to keep the "somethign awful" stuff to a minimum.
I don't find it surprising at all. They don't want a carbon copy of these forums, they want these forums. Posting on third party sites feels like talking in a vacuum. The main appeal of the official forums was the connection with LL and the defacto community present because we all have access to it and are members of it by virtue of being members of SL. No third party forum is going to replace that, and that is why many have just chosen to stop posting, or are still clinging on for dear life here. From: someone The main problem for SLU as I see it is the sheer popularity of Second Citizen forums. SC fails as a forum on all fronts yet continues to be popular based on primarily on controversy and because it seems that's where all the forum "cool kids" have gone. Sadly, some very intelligent and otherwise nice folks are so addicted to throwing the shit around that they would rather roll in the muck at SC than really participate in a forum that has any content.
Second Citizen's popularity is not a problem for SLU, as I don't feel a need to 'win" the forum race. I have been doing this for a long time and will continue to do so. Growing and sustaining a community is a lot of work. You don't just plop up forums and say "here they are". People will find the site that is the right fit for them. What I am finding is a lot of people ultimately post to multiple sites right now, and will probably keep doing that for awhile. i actually predict ultimately that the main forums may make a comeback in some form. Whatever happens, the forums have been closed for all of what, a week? Certainly it is way too soon to see any kind of definitive pattern anyway.

Good analysis. I think this is what I am doing really (hanging on here), as most of the "non-crazy" discussion is still here anyway (the tech talk and the current release feedback). If only LL would see what a big failure the blog is as a method of communicating with the residents, and devote their time to responding to the (now) more civilsed inquiries they receive here, I would be happy with just that.

From: Kristian Ming YASLF is still quietly gaining users who aren't flaming each other, aren't creating drama just for drama's sake, and are enjoying Kitten pictures. That's right, KITTEN PICTURES! I totally love the setup of YASLF. I do hope more people discover it, it really offers something different, and already has a nice feel to it.

I don't think the general areas here WERE much more connection to Lindens than we have on other forums, of course it feels like it since it's Second Life's forum, but did Lindens comment or participate? Now some Lindens go out and answer questions on Third Party Forums as well, not much but it has happened, I'm pretty sure they lurk around quite a bit. Maybe they want to 'outsource' the communication to other sites to have less work/maintanance and free up some resources for the coming million residents. They also have a responsibilty here to maintain/moderate and ban which in turn creates more negativity towards them, also on third party forums we can name names if someone is breaking rules that Lindens can't control, texture/design theft etc which in fact may benefit Lindens too since the permission system is what it is. But I agree with that all forums have something for everybody and no one should feel like they have to 'choose side', it's just to jump around on a few bookmarks and throw in a comment here and there.
