What was I looking for again?
06-14-2006 15:37
FlipperPA, as much as I love the service you and Jennyfur provide, this new search scheme leaves a lot to be desired.

When searching for a specific item, so many unrelated items appear in the search that it's almost impossible to find what you were looking for in the first place.

For example:

I searched for "watermoon" hoping to see all of our WaterMoon Breeze products listed. Only 3 were listed along with just about everything that had the word "water" in it's description.

Many items that specifically use the term WaterMoon did not appear and one of them got lower search result ratings than stuff other people had redundantly listed 20 times with the word "water" in their description.

And as I mentioned earlier - many items which explicitly use the term "WaterMoon" did not even appear in the search results.

I don't think it's working very well from the user perspective.

No worries...

We were doing some work and Java took a spill. The search should be back up and flying now - give it a whirl! Sorry about that, SiRiS and Ordinal.

Oh, no need to apologize bro. With such a major overhaul there's bound to be glitches here n there. I was just trying to give some feedback to help with the tuning of the engine. The more feedback we give to what results were getting, only serves better to help the person fine tune it to perfection. :D

We're still working out some glitches; something is causing the search to occasionally fail, and we're ferreting that out sorry for the inconvenience.

In the meantime, here are some fixes and improvements we've gotten into place outside the search:

(1) You now log in with avatar first & last name instead of "user name" - this makes it clear for everyone.

(2) Sellers now have a search box on the "sell" page so they can easily find items within their vendors (the Jonquille feature!)

(3) There's now a link to show items which are not yet listed on the site (recently uploaded ones) - so you can easily find them and fill in their information. (The HoseQueen feature)

Thanks again for all your tips. We're still discussing the best way to attack the browse problem, whether that be re-implementing the categories or coming up with a tag hierarchy that is similar in function.

Regards,

-Flip

I'd like to add my voice to the growing sentiment to bring back the categories. I understand that a "majority" of sales may have occured as a result of searches over category clicks but for the life of me, I can't understand why you would do away with a feature that obviously added value to your site. If you aren't concerned with that minority of your sales then are you prepared to kiss those sales goodbye?

Please add this to your discussion...a majority of my buys on SLBoutique were buys that came from my browsing the categories. Some of the items I would have never dreamed of searching for. If I was a merchant listing on SLBoutique, I would be very, very concerned about this.

SLB: Sorting (Order by) and more responses

'female skin' returns more skins now, indeed. ^^ lack of easy ability to sort results in way other than search score is a serious pain, though.

Joannah, you're absolutely right. On that note, the 'Order by' bar is back to help you sort through sellers' items or search results.

This seemed to be quite common -- we've raised the bar a bit on what it takes to be included to eliminate these spurious results.

From: Dianne Mechanique
I don't know how anyone else feels about this as it's an aesthetic thing but one of the big reasons I liked SL Boutique over SL Exchange was the large image tiles that could be (or mostly were), arranged on the page in a grid.

I really really like seeing all my stuff or the results that I am searching for displayed on a grid like that as I have a wide screen monitor most of the time.

With the new site, the layout is more like SL Exchange in that one is presented with a long long list of items with what appears to be a smaller picture and a long (usually one line) text description on the right. This is a waste of space. That same screen area could hold an entire second column of image tiles, the image tiles could also be bigger and it would all still fit in the same browser window. Much more efficient that way.

I am a visual person I like pictures, big pictures and I like to get a clear look at what I am getting. I find SL Exchange is particularly bad this way as they have tiny pictures with a big ugly blue border around them and you have to click multiple times and even open separate browser windows just to get a good look at the product.

Even if this new list view is the default, please consider adding the option to go back to the "tiles on a grid" view. Many of us don't really read the text and browse by looking at the pictures.

Don't fret, the "wide display" view isn't gone -- it's just in the shop. We're working right now on the grid format that will let you choose the number of columns to view (since we don't all have widescreens).

The ability to change the colors on your "SLB Store" still exists. Once logged in to the web site, click: "My Account" -> "Edit URL Colors & Image". Please let us know if this does not function as you would expect.

Here are some examples of store fronts users have customized using the aforementioned functionality:

http://www.slboutique.com/Alaska_Metropolitan/
http://www.slboutique.com/Torrid_Midnight/
http://www.slboutique.com/Lollypop_Extraordinaire/

As for the vertical navigation, it would be helpful if you could provide us with the name and version number of the web browser you are experiencing any rendering issues with. The attached .jpg file is an example of what the home page should look like in your browser.

Also - Can we no longer edit the look of our shoppes ? Mine is gross now with the whole new color scheme.

Sorry - my gut reaction is to pull my stuff off. But since I have invested so much time in putting it on I will wait and see how things evolve.

Oh are the things at the left side supposed to work ? Like New Items etc ? I click one and the nice triangle at the edge turns into a circle but I do not see any links or pics.

Yay \o/

sad to say though, the search engine still seems to be quite not up to par :< ran another search for 'female skin' (repetitive i know, but allows to see the changes) ... sorted by score, and the results went like:

* 5 or so pages of Calibris Pendragon works... including male skins o.O
* some 2 pages of Polly Pavlova's products, including tattoos and avatar eyes (her products all carry 'Skin Deep' brand so guessing that's the reason engine picked them up)
* snake skin textures, bikini, halters, dinosaur skin outfit, etc and so on... literally everything _but_ avatar skins, really

i.e. there's practically no change. Now okay, i understand these have keywords in descriptions and whatnot... what i don't get is why these random items score higher on result list than the actual products the buyer is actually looking for.. ^^;;;

*chuckles* me too. problem with simple search engine -- they're far more stupid than humans who do catagories. -- Unless you can come up with somethings like Yahoo, MSN or Google search of course :P

You know what would be good for search results? Treat designer names like google treats URLs. If you search for Second Life on google, you don't get 1000 results from secondlife.com. You get 1 result from secondlife.com with the option of seeing all results from that URL.

In other words, if you searched for skins, instead of having to page through all 20 pages of skins by one designer before seeing another, you would get one example link and an option to see "more like it by this designer" or just go to that designer's store.

Search for "hair" you would get a list of designers who made hair with one example from each, and then you could click on different designers links if you want to see more by them.

Something a lot of people don't realize is that you can add a "?nh=1" to the end of the custom URL to suppress the top navigation (nh was for "No Header";). Check out the difference between:

http://SLBoutique.com/Torrid_Midnight/

and

http://SLBoutique.com/Torrid_Midnight/?nh=1

The search also restricts buyers to only your items in the second option, making it truly your own private web store. Hopefully we'll have some news on a category solution soon; its not really a question of us deciding on whether or not we want to bring them back, its a question on whether or not they're compatible with the new search features. We've got our developers brainstorming on the best way to bring back a "browse" type functionality. (A tag hierarchy - basically like our old categories - may be the best way, as we can scale it going forward).

Regards,

-Flip

omg, i was thinking this kind of grouping would be really nice thing to have, but couldn't come up with way how it'd be technically done...

that'd be awesome if introduced though, yes ^.^

I agree with everyone one the lack of catagories being annoying, sl boutique used to be easier than slx to find stuff on, now it's harder. It doesn't realy make much sense, could we at least have one of the tags be the standard catagories?

Found another little bug just a few minutes ago.

I have Mature items checked as viewable. I see them fine after I log in. (Not before.) But if I go to Sell items, list my items, then go back to Buy items, the Mature items no longer show up.

Keiki,

I am working on this exactly right now -- it's good to hear that some may find it useful. But I am a little disappointed you beat me to the punch... :)

I just noticed my personal store isn't working. Like, at all. When I try to pull it up. It's just a blank screen. Is it just me? It seems other people's store pull up fine for me.

Thanks so much.

I also have another question/thought/idea. I would love to be able to see what tags are being used the most when people look at my items. Or to see what tags people are using in general when searching for specific things. Like the clothing tag for instance, are people really using that tag? If they aren't I would like to know! Just an idea.

Just so everyone knows, we're going to propose a solution to the category / browse problem within a few days, and then ask for feedback on our idea. :)

Good...just tried to look to see if there is any land for sale.

hmmm, let's seeeee.....would it be under:
Hot Tags? why would it?
Popular Tags? why would it?
New Tags? again, why? unless it's new
Top sellers? if it's land then it would be gone right?
Recent Sales? I refer youto the previous answer

Aren't Hot Sales, POpular Sales and Top Sellers all the same thing?

I could do a search for land...but that brings up everything related to land. How about real estate.....same thing.

ugh...looking forward to your solution...unitl then, I'll browse SL exchange and other places.
