Mm. The search seems to be working okay for me - I tried a few terms and didn't come up with anything unexpected. I'll give it a good going over tomorrow maybe.

The design is a lot nicer now, though the orange for the links is a bit yuck. Oh - whenever I load a new page (Camino, OS X) the dropdown sidebar menus are revealed before the page fully loads, then they vanish again, which is a bit disconcerting. I suspect this may affect other browsers as well.

Greetings!

I'm very proud to announce that the new version of SLBoutique.com has been launched. First off, I'd like to explain the two major changes we've put into place.

(1) The entire search has be re-written to use the Lucene Search Engine which will vastly improve the results provided. The original search engine was written in about 20 minutes by me, and it has long been overdue for a major overhaul. The results returned are now ranked by a scoring system, and should yield much better results than the former search which just did a straight string comparison on the name and description fields. As part of this change, we've dropped our categories in favor of tags. Tags (or "keywords";) are much more beneficial for searching, since you're not limited to one and can actually be descriptive about your product. The more and better tags you use, the easier it will be for people to find your products! Our search works a lot more like Google does now, which should yield much better results.

(2) As we've grown over the past year and a half, many new features have been added. Many of them didn't feel like they quite "fit" in an area properly, so we've re-designed the entire web site to incorporate the new features. We've also switched from the traditional Flipper purple color scheme to the nice Electric Sheep Company shade of blue (I'm sure Cristiano will be happy about that, hehe).

There are numerous other more minor changes - like the rotating tips, and the dynamic left navigation. We're continuing to tweak a few things here and there, but we hope this major revamp is pleasing to all of you!

I want to thank the SLBoutique.com team for all of their hard work: Christian Westbrook for the amazing work on the search engine, Ryan Buskirk for implementing the design, Amanda for the wonderful design itself (and Cory for her input as well), and the entire Electric Sheep Company team for all the thought that went into the redesign process. It is an honor to be working with such a talented team, and really nice to no longer be a one-man show! :) Most importantly, I want to thanks everyone who uses the site: buyers, sellers and surfers! You've turned it into an amazing community, and without you, there would be no content.

Warmest regards,

FlipperPA Peregrine

IT SUCKS. It is the most incomprehensible crappy search/tag system I've ever seen.

Hi there Merlyn, I'm tact, I don't think we've met. I'm sure Flipper will take everything into consideration that's been said. SLB has been great thus far and I've no doubt Flipper and ESC will come through.

:-)

Thanks for all the feedback everyone. Everything raised (and many of our own issues) have been kicking around our developers mailing list all day, and the gnomes are hard at work tweaking algorithms and enhancing the experience.

We are excited to have these new revisions out the door, but there is still a lot of work to go!

Keep the feedback coming...

One thing I'd like to suggest if it hasn't been mentioned already, is being able to choose how you'd like your search results listed. You could have it by price (high to low, low to high), alphabetical by creator, etc. The site looks great :)

Are you using the tags? Applying tags that will allow customers to find your item? Things like colors, male/female, type (halter, tank, shorts, capris, etc). Being specific with your tags will help.

No it won't. For example, go search for "airship". Notice the two airships at the very bottom of the list, being apparently less relevant to the search than the "Worship Me" pose, some clothing, some furniture, and some other junk that has nothing to do with airships. The fact that one of these airships has the exact tag "airship" doesn't help it appear before results that don't. (The fact that they also have "airship" in their titles and descriptions doesn't seem to help, either.)

For further amusement, search for "airships" -- now neither shows up, despite the fact that the other one actually has the tag "airships" instead of "airship". Exact match on the tag is so irrelevant, it's not even included in the search!

The search engine appears to be completely broken. Fixing my tags doesn't help any...

This works already on the custom stores. Check out the search options at TorridWear. We are excited about that functionality and it's being integrated over the rest of the site.

The more I play with the search, the more I don't like it. I've tried lots of two word combos that should bring up my HUDs. Sometimes the search engine finds them and sometimes they don't at all. And nearly every time there are a bunch of results which are puzzling.

Yah... the search brings up some content that it should, and then some that it shouldn't. But what isn't immediately obvious looking at the search result is that it has failed to bring up a lot of content that it should have, either placing way lower, or actually leaving it off entirely. Trying to bring up products I know are there seems to fail more often than it succeeds. It's pretty broke... :(

Even if it was working, I'm kinda put out that the site is no longer a good shopping site. It'll be a wonderful search engine for products if they get it working, but you can't really window shop. You can't just browse through catagories, wandering through the merchandise. You have to search, which means you have to already have an idea of what you're looking for. Great for searching, but no longer like a trip to the mall.

I'd go there to look for something specific, but I'd go to the other site for general shopping...

I like the look but stick with SL Exchange because you use forms for searching rather than querystrings forcing those of us who hit the back button to refresh the page...

SLB search/tags: main issue has been resolved
06-13-2006 20:56
A problem affecting some items/tags has been fixed, thanks largely to the feedback from everyone. My sincerest apologies to all for the bizarre results in the last few hours.

To those who had tried searching before and given up, I highly encourage you to try again. ('airship', 'female skins', 'gadgets', 'shorts' all look much better; I'd recommend 'gadgets' instead of 'hot gadgets' ... )

If you still are not seeing results as you would expect, please post here or contact me directly at christian@electricsheepcompany.com and include the queries or items involved so that I can look into it further.

From: Jonquille Noir
I have over 1300 items listed on SLB. If anyone wants to go back over all of it and hand-type in tags, be my guest. I would have thought the old categories and default tags would have worked, but it seems not.

We put a good deal of effort into automatically assigning tags to items that had already been listed to prevent sellers like yourself from having to go through an arduous process (1300 items is clearly far too many listings to run through to 'quickly add tags'). Hopefully now that it's fixed, you'll find that the search results will include your items based on those tags. If not, again, please contact me.

I can't stress enough how helpful it is to hear from everyone. While tagging is more flexible than selecting a single category from a static hierarchy, it may require a bit of tuning and some getting used to before it is demonstrably more powerful. With your feedback, I am confident we will work the kinks out and get there.

From: HeatherDawn Cohen
One thing that I am finding that is annoying is that the searches are bringing up results that kind of match the key word. When I typed in gadget it brought up that along with Gaudete and Goddes, etc....THAT I think should be fixed.

This can be disabled; once you log on to the site, click 'My Account', then under the 'Search Preferences' section, disable the option 'Suggest popular queries as I type.

Search is definitely better, but not as good as it could be.

The other major problem for me is still that it doesn't seem to be Firefox compatible. Often text is pushed off to the right and I get a few pages here and there as essentially blank.

Can you post or email a screenshot? Also what version of Firefox are you using? I think we all rock Firefox and it looks good to us.

Search will continue to get better. If you post your queries and what you expected to be returned it would be a big help.

The searches do seem to be much better now. Items that I couldn't get to show up before no matter what I searched for now seem to be showing. It's still as easy to browse without knowing what you're looking for first.

I was having the same format problems with Firefox 1.0.somethingorother, just upgraded finally to 1.5.0.4 and that seems to have fixed it. (And gave me back my scrollbar with Pimpzilla!)

Great Job!. It looks very smooth and cerainly uses the latest stylish technologies. ;) Much more pleasent to use than the former version.

I would like to second teh call for "bring back categories", though. I am a huuuuuuuuuuuuge fan of tags and this is coming from the man who was christenend the "evangelist of tagging" for a while in the German blogosphere.

But tags are not an appropriate substitute for a fixed taxonomy (a.k.a. categories) in every case; especially not in a shop where people tend to think in certain categories with a certain expected semantic already. Clusters like "Hot tags", "Most popular tags" etc. sound like a good idea. But without a fixes set of topics of similar meaning and importance they do not much to help the users orient themselves in a shop.

Please consider re-introducing categories or having "fixed use prioritised" tags for the most important "categories" in a shop like this.

Small issue: when you click on certain tags in the left bar (currently "blue" for example), you get an empty ... A hot tag with an empty result list ...?

Thank you all for your patience! After a long day and night of answering people queries, and assuring that we were working on it, it looks like the search engine is starting to produce the wonderful results we had hoped it would. We will continue to tune it and ferret out these browser-specific issues that people like Jesse, Jonquille and Keiki have mention. Screenshots will definitely help; we would, of course, like to get it running correctly under firefox 1.0. :)

Here's a post I made to the awesome PXP site; much of it has already been covered by Chris and Christian:

From: FlipperPA on PXP
Hey guys! Thanks for the feedback. We're aware of a lot of the problems, and have already started tweaking. The search engine, by default was putting far too much weight on description and far too little on tags, so we've changed that already; the search results I'm seeing are quite a bit better. Please let me know if your experience is or is not the same. I'll be continuing to check the thread in the SL forums for feedback. We've also got an internal discussion going right now about what do with with the categories. We still have the data, however, in analyzing how sales occurred on the previous version of the site, very few people actually browser by category; the lion's share of people used the search function. That said, some people did use the categories, and that's the core of our debate right now.

As far as my role, I'm still heading up SLBoutique, although it is owned by the Electric Sheep Company. I have a great team working with me now and am very excited about where this will head. We're still polishing the chrome on this new release - that's for sure! - but truly believe you'll see better results in the long run. I'm a paid employee of the Electric Sheep Company now, so don't worry - I'm not going anywhere any time soon (except for a two week vacation - <grin>;).

Regards,

-Flip

Awesome job on the revamp of the site look!

Although, I do have to side with the people wanting the static categories back for general window shopping & the orange for the Tag links is not hideous, but does clash with the current template design slightly.

As far as the search feature, my results:
(5:45am SLT 6/14/06)

bitch - 0
bitch gesture - 0
sim stats - 0
sim stats hud - 0
siris - 0
siris asturias - 0

All the above searches came back with 0 results, even though I know products I personally have up fit those searches, especially my name. :p

Hope this helps in the seacrh engine tweaking/refining.

Other than those minor things, kick ass job everyone!
Keep up the good work...
