I've made a tool called ShapeMaker which constructs cylinders, spheres and tori larger than 10 meters (and smaller if you like the facted look). It's free and open source and people can do what they want with it. It's at my property in Ohno at 44, 113. I attached a sample of the kind of build you can make with it pretty quickly. I can't really offer support for it, I just packaged up something I had made for myself. There's also an earler tool called RingMaker which is actually a little simpler to use but only does cylinders.

I feel weird about posting this here, but I'm not sure how many people read the Building forum and I thought it might be useful to people. If you do think it's useful, feel free to give it away. It's set for 1$ at my property, but only so I can easily have an idea of how many people grab it - I'm not trying to make money. (Not that I'm against making money)

Ty I look forward to trying this out. I actually have a Valentines day idea this might help with.

This is the type of "thing" I would like to see listed in the Sponsored Links section. What a great tool!

Cool, I'm glad it's something people could use :)

Zuzi - The joins are clean on on side, not so clean on the other. The thicker the block, the more obvious the seam on the "outside". Although you can make some interesting things with that effect, I think. You can make interesting stuff by joining rings with slightly different tilts. That's actually how the spheres and tori are put together by the tool. One thing I'd like to do, when I get a chance, is a wave form, like the ripples in a pond.

I'm curious if anyone has actually used these tools to build anything. A number of people have picked up copies, but I don't know if anyone has put them to practical use in a build. If you want to reply but not on the forums feel free to IM me.

I gave one to my friend who built a small house for themselves on 512sqms using the sphere shape. One thing that we both thought you may want to include in an update with the shape maker is a "stop command" for emergencies ( in cases where someone may inadvertantly enter the radius at say 40 meters instead of 0.0040) the prims involved in a 40 meter wide torus could be disasterous to a person inventory considering the shape maker will not stop building at given coordinates until the shape is aquired. here is a pic of only a fraction of what im speaking of.

Hunter - I hope it wasn't too much trouble. I think a cancel command would be a good idea. I pretty much know how to add one and I'll start looking into it. In the meantime, here is a clunky way to stop it in the middle of a build (it's what I do). Open up the contents, open the ShapeMaker script, and click the Reset button. You'll lose your current settings but everything will stop.

The latest version does include a limit on the total number of prims it will rez, to make accidents less problematic. There's nothing stopping people from editing the script and changing the maximum number of prims, though. I am paying attention to the feedback and planning improvements.

BTW, someone was kind enough to let me know that a person is selling the tool as his own. I don't mind if people resell it, or even use the code to make their own stuff to sell. I can't put much effort into distriubuting it, so reselling is a way for it to be available to people. It's kind of lame to actually pretend you wrote it, but I'm not going to sweat that. If you think the tool is useful and you don't want people to have to pay for it, feel free to give it away.

What a wonderous thing...

Hunter gave me a copy of the ShapeMaker and I was the guy that made a domed home from it. It was so easy and very fun to watch it work. PLUS Hunter is trying to make his own RingWorld with the ShapeMaker. That would be cool actually... someone buying a big plot of land and making a RingWorld in the sky, any takers? Thanks for this help to the builders in the game!!!

Great minds, Beta :) RingMaker and ShapeMaker were adapted from a tool I made for myself a while ago, and one of the things I did with it was make a Ringworld model:

http://www.geocities.com/goreldin/2life/Ringworld1.html

Hard to believe that was March 2004 (if the file dates are correct). I had to do it in the sandbox. I'd love to check out Hunter's if he makes one. Another project I fiddled with was the rotating interior of the Disccovery from 2001, but I got distracted. I'd love for someone to build that so we could jog on it :)

Well I asked about projects done with ShapeMaker, and here's something I made (for someone else). It's based on a Greek theater. Actually I tweaked the tool a little to form the aisles and mutliple rows at once. But if anyone needs a large theater along these lines, let me know, and I'll generate one for you.

Here's a thought. Use llGetPrimitiveParams and let us build the prim we want to replicate :)

Yeah, that's on a long list. I think I'll go ahead and package up the tool I used to position the ramps though. That allows you to replicate any object into a circle. You drop a script in the object, and drop the object in the tool's inventory. It's a pain making things easily usable by other people though.

Tell me about it, that's why I stopped working for random people.
You make a script in 5 minutes and then you spend a week writing up a fancy windows-like GUI for it so that mr. random noob doesnt have to go into the script and edit the variables.
