Well his replacement has just been announced and it's not exactly an improvement
He'll be succeeded by White House counsel Alberto Gonzales who was responsible for the 2002 memo in which Bush claimed the right to waive anti-torture law and international treaties providing protections to prisoners of war. He's also publicly defended the indefinite detention of terrorism suspects without charges or access to legal counsel. Oh, and he's also previously represented Enron. Surprise surprise! *cough*

It's an improvement.... but not by much. (Hell... just about anybody would have been an improvement over that maniac.)
As well... the conservatives don't like Gonzales much. As far as they're concerned he's a blank slate, (a la Souter) and they want a rabid hellfire and brimstone anti-abortion conservative. His appointment could be a wedge in Bush's base voting community.
