SL "celebrities"?

Recent events -- both in general and some things that have happened to me -- make me ask a question similar to another I've asked in the past --

Just what is an SL celebrity?

And why would someone want to be one? Is there anything good that comes of it?

I'm not even sure I know what an RL celebrity is -- why are there ones in SL?

(And no, I'm not trolling. But I welcome both wit and truth.)

I am certain everyone has their own opinion what an SL celebrity is. I would have to say my definition of SL celebrity or celebrities are very well known people for specific things they do in SL, which their are many. Like some examples.....

Bacarra and Fey for there event planning.
Nephi and Neil for there artistic abilities like there beautiful builds, portraits, clothing, etc.
Juro for his beautiful builds.
Cyrus for his wicked AV's. Oh yes and beautiful gowns.
Darko (Bad Boy and best Party thrower) along with the wifey..moi. :p

I could keep on and on. I guess it is the way you want to see it. I may be wrong for the way I see it, but that is how I do. Dunno. :o

This involves social dynamics, and is very curious to me. Not being someone who can place myself within the shoes of others easily, I spent my formative years being weaned on The National Enquirer and learning about pop culture to better understand about celebs. I can't claim I am any closer to answering some of these questions, but I do feel I'm a more astute observer.

I have met people who have grand reputations within SL, and I have come to value them for their wisdom, talent, and perhaps most importantly to me: their friendship. (And I wouldn't have it any other way. :) )

Hmm My take on this...

I was tp'd to a impromptu party the other night, by torley *huggers*, when i got there i was filled with a room of what i would class SL 'celebrities' such as...

Mistress Midnight
Torley
Cross Lament
Cristiano :)
Flipper
Lash
Francis
Kris <3

and many others, I was afk most of the time due to RL crap, but well, they are a GREAT bunch, and i was honoured to have been there with them all :)

Love you guys :)

Good questions Donovan.

Seems to me the perception of being a cleb is generated by the community on individuals - hopefully those making contributions that are for the greater good. :)

Why anyone would want to have that perception is a dynamic of their ego/persona/AV-face and is as varied as are the motivations of human behavior. I do feel some set out to gain that perception, again, for a myriad of reasons.

When i first started in SL I felt Beta and Charter Members were celebs and I introduced myself in an effort to find out what SL was about. Quickly I discovered various other celebs, both inWorld and here on the forums - some I sought, others I didn't.

Does good come of celeb-ness? Sure - but it's more about the goodness of hearts-in-action then from being a celeb.

Donovan you are my hero... MASTER of the prim spiral! :P

SL Celebrity by my definition could be someone you heard a lot about (good or bad) even before you met them in world :D

Aww, shucks -- celebrity is over-rated! Who needs fame, fortune and everything that goes with it?? To all of those voices in my head, I'm a super star and that's OK by me. :D

I think 'celebrity' status is obtained in great part because of the forums.

For example, I consider Darko to be a SL celebrity, but if I had not been active in the forums, I probably would never have known about him or had the opportunity to meet him.

And must add, that thanks to Darko, I have met quite a few other really cool people in-world whom I would not have met otherwise. For that, Gracias mi hermano!

The same with many other famous and infamous folks. Many, I have never seen their work or have met them in-world. I just know they are 'celebrities' because of their activities in the forums.

And again, thanks to the forums, I know which 'celebrities' I definitely want to avoid in-world ;)

Last, I have run into some 'celebrities' in-world that just like their RL counterparts, have been total snobs, arrogant and in obviously in love with themselves. So sad, since it is 'only a game'.

SL's most famous resident, by far, has to be Torley. My God, does anyone not know, um, her? :)

I had a similiar experience to Merwan's - when I first joined, it was the Ama Omegas and the Billie Sunchasers, the Jones and the a whole slew of Muses that I felt a sense of awe when I met them in world. That trio of Midnights made me pretty awestruck too. To this day, Francis Chung still makes me nervous when she ims me lol.

I meet people all the time in SL who say "Oh wow, I read your posts in the forums and I've always wanted to meet you", or "Oh I've seen your site". There is definitely truth to the forums raising your visibility in SL, as does having stores closely associated with you. The sweetest thing anyone said to me like that was a newbie that I met the first day the snow sims opened. I was at the top of the ski lift and I said hi to her, and she said "Wow I didn't think I'd get to meet famous people during my trial".

Awww...Tito. I know my husband well and I know he will say he doesn't feel he should be considered a celebrity. He is a very modest human being. He is just loving, caring and all about la familia both in SL and RL. Also as the ppl I mentioned I felt are celebrities and I can keep on going with that list. It is about feeling loved and a sense of closeness, which we love to give to those that deserve it...like you. :)

At the very least, it is a good opening line :). That is how my friend and I made it in to your mansion and were able to chat with you and Taeja.

I wonder if the average player is aware of who they are buying from when they pick out something in Umber or Chartreuse. Or is it simply "that cool store when I buy my clothes from all the time". Or "that cool store where I buy my flying vehicles and robot suits all the time".

I bumped into a player while I was with Marcos once who asked him if he worked for ARMORD. Marcos replied with "I am ARMORD" which I thought was funny.
