On topic: I also can't get on SL.

Reply to 90% of the rest of this thread: What the hell does any of this have to do with SL being open or not?

Teeny,

<<African-American is a stupid little term that reinforces the belief that Africa is a monolithic country and culture of jungle dwellers, not a continent made up of many separate countries, cultures and various races.>>

That's the trouble with political correctness - what is seen as an acceptable term in one decade becomes unacceptable in the next.

I take your point about the term African American, and what you say is quite true. However it does serve the need of distinguishing people with an African background from those with a Caribbean background, where the cultures are so dissimilar.

But all our racial terms are awkward, and will probably remain so until that happy day dawns when racial issues are no longer issues.

I really want to say that having read this thread in its entirety... I am completely and utterly... dislodged from my current position by freak breezes that have moved me to somewhere very different.

Not being African American, black, or otherwise, but Thai, genetically speaking, I call myself American; having grown up with white parents (I was adopted) and had a thoroughly American upbringing.

It's funny though, if you WERE to describe a black person, would you have to find out first where they were from? "Excuse me, sir, but are you from the Carribbean? No? Perhaps Brazil? What about Africa?" Therefore you could say safely, "He is a Danish gentleman with genetic ties to the African race," instead of saying "He is African American," sort of like -- if you were describing someone who was Russian, you'd say, "Russian," instead of "White guy." Though more accurately, perhaps, you could say, "Eastern European," except that Russia's such a huge bloody country. Maybe we should all wear nametags detailing our ancestry.

Maybe we should just quit naming countries and use regions. Western European. East African. West African. Southeast Asian. North American, eh? South American.

Hmmm. Would be fun to say, "I'm Californian. With Thai ancestry."

From my alternate reality, a term that exists is "Afrerican". But the geography is different. ;)

I like...

"human" :D

^ this is in NO way meant to slight my furry or friends of other species. I'm part-cat, part-robot myself!

I for one am offended when someone calls me "human". Do you have ANY IDEA what an awful insult that is most other places in the galaxy? :p

It's a game that people pay to play. Some people play a hell of a lot to play. If they can't use the service they're paying for, do you not think they have a right to complain or voice their concern?

Or is your selfish comment just the result of the fact that you can get in and you don't give two shits that there are others that cant? Which is what it sounds like from here.

Sorry, Kris, but your point is nerfed by the fact that it indeed is not broken =(

uhuh. so that couple of dozen attempts to log in just now and over 12 minutes to load when it finally did is now normal service is it? which is pretty much the battle I have had every time I've tried in the last week.

If it ain't broken, we're fucked.

There is a log in queue now. I don't like the multiple tries and long load time either, but without the queue we would most likely be right back where we were at the end of last week, i.e., no one gets in.

Oh boy, "Yank" isn't an insult. Some folks just look for reasons to be offended.

Maybe not in Minneapolis, but it would get the crap beaten out of you around here.

David, with all due respect, you often seem to employ this type of reasoning; that "this" or "that" would "get the crap beaten out of you here". What's up with that? Do you live in an area where people have such thin skins where violence is the only avenue of recourse at the slightest hint of an insult?

It was at one time, about 200 plus years ago, considered derisive, but was adopted by Americans, especially New Englanders and Union soldiers as a nickname for themselves. The etymology of the word is likely Dutch and probably means nothing more than "little John". How offensive. And just so you know, Union soldiers from Fort Snelling, MN did fight in the Civil War and were also called "Yanks". Last I checked Virginia wasn't part of New England, so if someone called a Virginian a Yank I am not sure where the insult is, maybe you can elaborate.

When I was in the Service I was stationed in southern states and I was called a Yank as were other soldiers who were my friends. We laughed and called them Johnny Rebs or what have you. Nothing came of it but a bunch of laughs.

Seek to be offended and you will surely be rewarded.

With all due respect to LL and anyone else ... FUCK THAT. That is simply NOT acceptable for any length of time.

If my SL login experience is now to be 45 minutes of alternating between retrying and staring at a static loading bar and then being thrown back to the front screen, I'm out of here.

Anyone wanna buy a sim?

I agree Kris, it's not acceptable. However, for me, it's put up with the queue until they fix it or leave. I can tell you that both Sokelle and I will be tiering down or possibly leaving if these issues aren't fixed soon. I have hardly even been logging in due to these issues the past few days :(

Well I just started a new thread on the subject up there ^^^. Oh wait. it's down there now vvv.

And fired off an email to Philip, too.

But yes. If this continues for more than about a few days, I'm so out of here. I'm not spending $195 a month for this shit.

/me waits for the usual bunch to come tell me how crass it is to threaten to leave, or to take my money elsewhere, or to say anything against LL ever.

political correctness is a term used to marganlize the criticism of discriminatory biases discovered in language. a bias you unintentionally illustrated, selador...

Yeah, if you just wait you get back in. It's just enough time to play Minesweeper. If you keep closing the prog and trying to get back in, you make it worse.
