Ha! Great thread I really wanted to be tall in SL - opposite to how I am in RL, but like many I didn't realize I was THAT tall LOL I'm over 6ft by the avruler and a bit closer to 7ft when I'm wearing heels. I didn't change my height tho after I found out - I got a kick out of it and kept my Amazonian proportions

If you think about it, any question of AV height is completely arbitrary. While prim sizes are denominated in "meters", this has absolutely NO correlation to real world dimensions. At the end of the day, its all a question of the relative size as measured in pixels, of structures and AVs.
One might build a wall 10 meters high, but is it really 10 meters? Of course not. The number 10.0 is just a value stored on a h/d in California, transmitted via the Internet to your computer, and then drawn as a number of pixels on your monitor.
LL could change every reference from meters and start calling the dimensions "inches" tomorrow. In the process, absolutely nothing would change. In terms of how we view this second world, we wouldn't all become Lilipudlians because of the change.
Toy Lafolette is short, no matter how many meters tall the SL scale says she is, and my AV is tall, even if the denominations were changed and the SL scale suddenly said I was 2 foot nothing.
So... the whole point of this discussion seems a bit silly to me.

From: Saul Lament Most everything in SL is built to a larger scale than RL. This is because of the camera views. When you build anything to scale - that is proportional to an average slightly under 6-footish person - your camera view whacks out when you’re inside the build. You end up looking at the outside walls more than the inside walls - cursing all the while. ...
This is making my brain hurt.. It makes perfect sense, but it got me to thinking how one seemingly small thing affects things totally unrelated. If the camera view had been different so that you could see inside a properly scaled building without a problem then AVs would be normal sized. A not quite optimized camera view creates giants. On a side note: A long time ago in another life, I remember when many buildings were properly scaled. Shopping was a pain in many stores. Had to go into mouselook to walk around, then get out of mouselook to buy.

- Ace Ace, I couldn't agree with you more -- except for the last bit of your post (quoted above). Yes, it doesn't matter whether you call the measurement meters, inches, pixons or whatever: it's entirely arbitrary. What counts is an avatar's relative size to its environment. Yet isn't there value in asking the corollary questions, of how are the dimensions of that environment set? How does that "set" our avatar parameters? How different a place would SL be if we all had some kind of ruler available when we were making our first character AV? Should LL maybe consider changing its units conversion to bring it more into line with RL expectations -- or would it be even better for them to go to something even more abstract and disconnected from RL experience? At least, these are the questions floating around in my mind after having been informed that my AV was a whopping "six foot nine." And I find it interesting that, so far, no one's AV has come out shorter than expected/hoped for. I was honestly anticipating the responses to be a bit more varied.

I'm around 7'3" or so. hehehe. That would be nice if there was a readout in appearance mode telling you your height in inches & cm... Also the global avatar scale is a great idea... Imagine avatars running around that are like 6" tall or 12 feet tall hahaha. That would be hilarious!

Scale?

From: Saul Lament Most everything in SL is built to a larger scale than RL. This is because of the camera views. When you build anything to scale - that is proportional to an average slightly under 6-footish person - your camera view whacks out when you’re inside the build. You end up looking at the outside walls more than the inside walls - cursing all the while. So builders tend to 'build big' to compensate for this effect. Build a bit bigger and suddenly the camera views act more like expected. There is then a trickle down effect to everything else. My house is bigger, so my fireplace is bigger, now my sofa looks small so let's make that a bit bigger, now my avatar looks like a child on the sofa and I make myself a bit bigger. Now my bigger avie can't fit in a 'normal' sized car, so we make the car bigger...and so forth. It feeds on its self. Try it yourself - build a simple house 'to scale' - you will soon be cursing your camera view. I would like to try that. Now, my home might have what is known as catherdral ceilings to help with camera angles, but if I could make the rooms and furnishings to proper scale I would be happy. I found out I was huge when I used a free ruler. I adjusted myself to be 5' 10", like in real life. Now I found all my builds are way over sized. I'm going to be makeing a new home with proper sized doors and windows, and then furnish it with normal things. I have one question. How many SL units would 1" be. What is the SL .010 in real life terms. I want to measure a RL table, and make a SL version. But how would I properly make the legs the right height, if I don't know how many .010 units it takes to make inches. Does anyone know?

Does anyone know? SL mesurements are in meters, so: metric -> imperial 1 millimetre [mm] 0.03937 in 1 centimetre [cm] 10 mm 0.3937 in 1 metre [m] 100 cm 1.0936 yd 1 kilometre [km] 1000 m 0.6214 mile
imperial -> metric 1 inch [in] 2.54 cm 1 foot [ft] 12 in 0.3048 m 1 yard [yd] 3 ft 0.9144 m 1 mile 1760 yd 1.6093 km 1 int n. mile 2025.4 yd 1.853 km
And the unit you specified was one centimeter.
