Is anyone ELSE taller than they expected?

I found out yesterday why I tower like a giant over one or two of my friends in SL: I'm 6'9" tall. :o

As I was setting up I had no real feedback about relative sizes, but I wanted to be a little on the tall side. And compared to most of my friends, I am, just that, a little taller. So it was a shock to read that number on the ruler my friend had.

Just curious if anyone else is taller in SL than they intended to be. Maybe if there's interest in the question I'll make a poll on avatar heights, too.

I was 6' 1" and was rather shocked by that cause I tried to be short when I started. I made sure to shrink down to a nice 5' 9" right away.

I just discovered I'm 5'8" - I checked because standing next to some statuesque beauties yesterday, I felt just as short in SL as I do in RL :D

But damn, 5'8" isn't short, is it? It appears to be in a world where everyone is close to 7", I guess. But then again, most builds are scaled to a little larger than normal, so I suppose it all works out.

If I scaled my av down to my RL 5'1", I'd probably look like a damn munchkin.

I used to be constantly accused of making short AVS (or even child AVs), but when I pull out my AV ruler and show people, they are amazed that my AVs were actually well within the normal range for humans and that their AVs are giants. Many refused to believe it. I changed my AVs so most of my AVs are giants and I fit in better with the general AV population.

Perhaps if SL had something in the profile or appearance that showed you how tall your AV is, there would be more normal sized AVS.. Or perhaps people just like the looks of the giants more, and it would change nothing.

The simple numbers on the appearance menu cant translate to actual height. There are many variables that affect height, overall height, the lenght of your legs, torso, hips, etc. There are a lot of freebie height detectors you can find that you click on to have your actual height revealed.

My usual AV is 8' tall and I tower over most people I see. Its very rare I see somone as tall as I am. The exception is those that are mech or "other than human" that are prim enhanced.

I remember when the first av ruler was made back in beta. I think it caused universal shock, hehe. Almost everyone had their height near the max with the vast majority of people being 7' or taller. People seem to use somewhat more realistic heights now than they used to. My own avs are the same height at the RL me... about 6'1". In the real world I'm taller than most people. In SL I'm a shortie.

I find it reassuring that I'm not the only one who's experienced this. I may try changing my AV height, but unfortunately it's not one easy slider. But then again, in relative terms I'm where I want to be... so changing only makes sense if I can convince all my other friends to shrink for great justice :D

Please keep voting and responding. I sense a nascent feature request :)

I put that my avs height is what i intended.........that is, it is now lol.

I too started out much taller than i am, but my first meeting with a ruler fixed that :p .
So the past approx 6 months ive been the height i want to be, around 5'7 - 5'8 without shoes ( my RL height) and most people i meet tower over me hehe.

Also remember that any kind of measuring script will return the Z dimension of your avatar's bounding box -- basically, how tall SL thinks your av would be were it to climb inside a refrigerator box. Unfortunately, at some point, our heights were changed relative to the bounding box, so today, our bounding boxes will actually be shorter than our avatars. So if you're getting a readout of 6'9", it's actually probably closer to 7'. You can test this by standing on another avatar. See where your feet intersect their hair and/or scalp?

I wouldn't mind my avatar being SLIGHTLY shorter, but there isn't a way to do it while actually maintaining the proportions of my av today. I asked about the feasibility of adding a "Global Scale" slider to the Appearence menu, and was assured that it was something that could be done, but that it would, of course, depend heavily upon interest from other users. I didn't really care enough to attempt to build interest. :)

I still think it'd be pretty good -- you could maintain the proportions of a 200cm avatar at 100cm, or vice-versa.

I think my av is Amazonian in height, which wasn't my intent when I first created it. Now, I prefer the added height, because it makes the proportions fit without my having to tweak.

I meant to be shorter than other Avatars, and I am shorter than other Avatars. But I turned out to be taller, according to those free measuring things, than I thought I would be. So I voted that I ended up taller than I thought.

It's all about the camera view
04-25-2005 12:40
Most everything in SL is built to a larger scale than RL. This is because of the camera views. When you build anything to scale - that is proportional to an average slightly under 6-footish person - your camera view whacks out when you’re inside the build. You end up looking at the outside walls more than the inside walls - cursing all the while.

So builders tend to 'build big' to compensate for this effect. Build a bit bigger and suddenly the camera views act more like expected. There is then a trickle down effect to everything else. My house is bigger, so my fireplace is bigger, now my sofa looks small so let's make that a bit bigger, now my avatar looks like a child on the sofa and I make myself a bit bigger. Now my bigger avie can't fit in a 'normal' sized car, so we make the car bigger...and so forth. It feeds on its self.

Try it yourself - build a simple house 'to scale' - you will soon be cursing your camera view. :D

My av without shoes is 5'11 the same height I am in RL. My first meeting with an av ruler shocked the heck out of me though cause I was like 7'6 in heels. Sl everything is scaled bigger it seems so most people in SL I know are taller than me unless they have child/chibi avatars.

I look like a munchkin compared to most other avies, so I was kind of shocked when I found out my av is the exact same height as I amin RL (5'3";). I'm glad it worked out that way.

The only bad thing is that certain *ahem* animation balls are usually made for all you amazons. :p

My av was intentionally short--4'3" according to those free AV rulers--and it actually works out well. The "average" Furry avatar, I've found, is somewhere in the 5'-5'5" range, making many(like the Luskwood avs) about a head taller than I am. IRL, I'm 5'3", and this is my usual proportion to people of about six feet, so it all works out like real. ^.^

But on a side note, my first avatar was very tall(around 7'10", I think) also by intention, as he was based upon a similarly-oversized RolePlay character.

Heh, I have three I fiddle with now, which one ya talking about? ;)

OK, the main or RL one (based on an Uru av) was max height as I did not know any better at the time. I've since toned down the height since watching a friend replicate himself reasonably well. My main av is now about 5'10" I think, which is rather close to my RL 5'7".

I have a small av, and is clearly not a child (more like a little white freckly alien). I built him with the notion of stuffing him in a sphere attatchment, but I've found the avatar to be more endearing than the attatchment idea was. Figures. ;) This av is about as short and small as you can make it.

I'm now also fidding with a third avatar, and am going to be staying to the subject's height on that one (about 6'6" IIRC).

I'm right there with you. 2'6" would be nice.

From the beginning, I set out to be short. I tend to be between 4'-8" and 4'-10", depending on the shoes I'm wearing. I noticed even back in beta that most of the others were tall. I wanted to be different. :D
