http://apnews.myway.com/article/20041015/D85O199O4.htmlA day traditionally reserved for the Christian God is coming under attack by the Mighty Morphing Power Rangers this year as Halloween falls on a Sunday. "This calendar has been around forwever and it is anti-christian. It's time for a change," exclaimed Anna Falactic Shock of Mobile, Alabama. "It's an attack on the faith of this nation. We must stop the devil and remove October 31 from the calendar." Her neighbor, Penny Costal agrees, "We got rid of February 29. We can get rid of this abomination." Godless Americans like Sharon Needles disagree, "It's just a holiday. Completely changing the calendar is ludicruous. Do they really think the Power Rangers will take over Christianity?" There has been some talk of voluntarily celebrating halloween on Saturday. However, the community cannot agree. This will leave some house giving out candy on Saturday and some on Sunday. According to sixth grader Shelita Hamm, "This is a great compromise. This means some people will probably give out candy on both nights. More candy is good for everyone."

A church here in town runs an "alternative" program on Halloween, providing candy and other sorts of things to children whilst running them through a myriad of brainwashing bible-themed booths and games. It's actually quite popular.

Oh yeah I read this one. Oddly enough, my first thought was for the poor little Maliyah, who'll probably feel very alone when she's the only (or almost, dunno) kid out on the Saturday to do the trick-or-treat thingy. Way to go moomie, ostracizing your child; it'll surely confuse her less than having Halloween on the Sunday. *thumb up and smirks*
I like to try and think in a tolerant way when it comes to "religious" matters, but this kind of thing is just bullcrap. What the hell *is* actually still religious in Halloween anyway, that'd it traumatize their kids or whatever. I'm sure these people would be the same ones to whine if they were told "then stop offering gifts to your kids on Christmas, because it corrupts the pure image they should have of it". Feh.

My neighbors of five years do not celebrate Halloween. When they see the pumpkins, the ghosts, the six-foot wooden Frankenstein, witch, and werewolf, the cobwebs, the fogger machine, and the scary sounds coming from my house, I am referred to as the "anti-Christ" that lives next door. I should have known when my victorian gargoyles in the garden were referred to as "the devil's work" after they took up residence. I can't wait until they see the planned landscaping for the front yard next year. I'm expecting screams, crosses, and biblical readings all night long to protect themselves.

My son's kindergarten teacher has informed us that we will be having a "harvest party" at school instead of a Halloween one. Thankfully, my daughter (who attends a preschool that is located in a Methodist church's facility, oddly enough, though it's not religiously oriented) will still get to have a Halloween party with costumes, decorations, and all that fun stuff. Blah, silly people.

I will be sacrificing a virgin on the Sunday in question. I already have the virgin and am anxiously awaiting the arrival of this special day!

Darko, you have to be very careful about getting your sacrificial virgin too far in advance for obvious reasons. On the other hand, if you wait until the last minute the price doubles (at least). What to do, what to do?

I wish I could be there to watch thier reaction to your new landscaping! On another note: some people take Halloween *far* too seriously.. it's just good, clean, spooky fun!

And to others it is indeed a religious observance which "trick-or-treating" has been lost in translation.

Not a holiday per se my friend but an observance. It is derived from the Wiccan faith.

I never realized it was a Wiccan holiday. Of course, I don't think I could name a Wiccan observance if my life depended on it.

In the spirit of full disclosure, I should point out that your victorian gargoyles double as your sprinkler system, thus their heads spin around shooting out water Linda Blair style.

I think many people are unaware of the origins of this and many other holidays that were derived from old faiths. On a side note, I was raised with the "Hallmark" version of this particluar observance: candy, cheap costumes, ghosts, dracula, etc. Good, fun stuff!

Wow.. this article is news to me. From: someone ..In Vestavia Hills, Ala., a suburb of Birmingham, a furor erupts every time Halloween falls on Sunday. Local officials decided not to take a stand this time. I live here... and I've never heard of a 'furor' erupting because of Halloween. From: Lecktor Hannibal Not a holiday per se my friend but an observance. It is derived from the Wiccan faith.
And, actually, it kinda pre-dates wicca a bit... Supposedly about 2000 years old, Halloween was born from the religious Celtic holiday honoring the Samhain (the Lord of the Dead). Mostly because they believed the spirits of the dead returned the night before November 1. In Europe, it was called 'All Hallows Eve'... the Night of the Dead.

Wicca is about 50 to 100 years old, so yeah, Halloween predates it. But Halloween is an old pagan holiday and is definately a Wiccan holiday.
I'm just a Witch, I'm too lazy to be Wiccan. *waits to see if anyone gets the joke*
I don't mind Christians moving Samhain/Halloween to Saterday as long as they don't mind me forcing everyone to celebrate Christmas on Winter Solstice.

I don't see the big deal really, many Christian holidays were set in place on days and modeled after existing pagan and wiccan holidays anyway why is Halloween any exception? Its a holiday for children to have a little fun, dress up and go see relatives and friends and hoard enough candy for survival through the winter. Many of us adults enjoy the holiday as well. Leilany!!! I found your costume it should be here by Wed.

From: Zander Veil Wow.. this article is news to me. I live here... and I've never heard of a 'furor' erupting because of Halloween. I suspect the furor is caused by a small handfull of "Pay Attention to Me! I'm more Rightous than You! Halloween is Satanic!" loudmouths and some followers.
