This is an interesting thread. I am the same person regardless of being in-world or not. There are some big differences but I have the same values, same opinions and same convictions regardless of where I am.

That being said I NEVER take forum stuff in-world. I view the forums as a place to have healthy debates about issues pertaining to SL and RL. I enjoy hearing what others think and sometimes my opinions even change after hearing someone else’s side of a particular issue. I NEVER take forum attacks personally btw, if I did I would probably just never post anything because I would always be pissed off. I look at them as someone’s way of expressing themselves even though I may not respect their way of doing so.

In-world on the other hand is a place to have fun and be goofy. I love my friends and enjoy flirting, being silly and hopefully making people happy. I will discuss heavier issues from time to time if they come up but on the whole I would rather not. I would like to think that in-world I am fun to hang out with but I am not the one to judge that… hehe.

I have met a good many of you in-world and find most people to be very nice and interesting even though we may disagree on forum topics. Darko is a good example for me. Yes, we have disagreed, even bitterly, on some forum issues as you have seen but in-world I would call us casual friends. He and Paris have always been very nice to me and I enjoy their company.

Above all, in-world I am there to have fun and will not let anything said or done on the forums get in the way of that. I may bitterly oppose you on forum issues but I am very open to friendships in-world too.

I'm the same on the forums as I am in-world. Some folks who I call friends post here regularly and others never do.

I pretty much always leave arguments here on the forum though, unless someone starts something in-world. In-world I would be glad to hang and chat with just about anyone, even those I have strongly disagreed with on the forums, unless they act like assholes while in-world. I don't usually hang with folks I can't find some respect for.

Do you belong to circles of friends or cliques? If so do they transcend both the forums and in-world?

No circles of friends of cliques here.

I have a ton of casual friends (whooohooo!) but no close friends (wah). ;)

Although I have met a few of you at the forum parties(really enjoyed those), I really don't seem to see many of you in game, with the exception of a few close friends now and then.
*makes a note to self to get out and explore more*
Ahh, but then again, with my crazy RL work schedule, it makes it hard to see anyone in the first place :( Not too many people on at 2:00AM EST when I do manage to get in.

I think I am a less prone to debate in-world. I am not exactly sure why that is, it's something I have pondered a bit on, and haven't really come to any conclusions beyond a thought that it may be due to a subconcious thing when facing a representation of a human being.

Funny, I'm more prone to debate, I think, in-world. It's also easier to get your point across as well as understand better the other person's point of view without too much of Torley's favorite thing, redundancy.

I don't have many friends in SL in general but I'm really interested in making more. It's strange to think that a large part of my time as an SL resident was spent going to events without having any real contact with other people. That's probably why I decided to have my own store, so I could produce something and feel proud of it, and why I started speaking up more on the forums. I think I am the type of person who needs to sit in the shallows for a bit before swimming around the deep end.

I was limited by the length allowed for the individual questions so I had to find a way to make the poll with semi-concise questions. "Forum friend" was probably not the best choice of terminology. I guess what I was trying to ask was; do you find yourself agreeing/disagreeing/defending with people in the forums based upon your in-world relationships?

Well poop! While I figured you were allowing for varying degrees of friendship, I guess I thought your poll was more about how often do you hang out with people in world that you talk with in the forums.

But now you post this is what you meant and to me, that is a whole other issue in some ways. hahaha.. If you don't start an new thread, I'll add my new comment to this one soon. :D

That was in response to those who said they didn't know what a forum friend was.
If the initial questions work for you then answers to that end are more desirable.

The purpose of the poll was to try to get some idea of how we behave en masse in the forums and the relationship of that behavior to our in-world relationships.

With the talk of cliquishness leading to "ganging up" type behavior, Oldbie/Linden "Love Fests", "The feted/fetid inner core", and the like, I want to see if people do actually behave in these manners and what their thoughts are pertaining to these accusations/issues.

I do find myself feeling more involved in SL as a whole -- the forums are like a pulse that you can put your fingers on. Many influential people in SL do read and participate in the threads, and everyone is discussing their own ideas -- it's a great way to find out more about what SL is, what it was, what people want it to be.

As a result, I am more outgoing in-world than I was before I really starting participating in the forums. I'm not as afraid to talk to people, or disagree with them. It's a good thing and I think me in the forums and me in-world compliment each other :)

Nolan,

I really don't think this poll had enough options, you should have gotten even more granular with things like:

1-4 of my friends in world are also my friends in the forum
5-8 of my friends in world are also my friends in the forum
9-12 of my friends in world are also my friends in the forum.

Plus you forgot:

I am only friends with people who post in French.
I just pretend to like people so they will buy stuff from me.

Otherwise, great poll!

Yeah, those are the ones. Actually, Brits are luckier than either of us.

LOL! you harpy!

Truth be told, I was afraid of being scolded for not having enough options. Leave it to some "Olbie-know-it-all" to throw a wrench in the cosmic gizmo! :D

From now on I will only respond to people who post in Akkadian cuneiform... :p

I'm the same where ever I am, yea maybe a better typist here, however, I never have considered an issue of "forum friends".

Maybe I'm doing this wrong.

I thought the forums where about issues and discussions, not expressions of friends and enemies.

Then again, naive, silly me, I spend my time in SL proper NOT worrying about enemies and enjoying my time w/my friends and other folks I meet.

Am I doing this wrong?

Did I miss the memo? :o

I put a cover sheet on my TPS form, I promise! :D

Hugss ta muh buds and fer my enemies  ... J/K hehehehe
