In addition to the boat dock and airstrip, we are beta testing a transport system to the new continent.

First let me clarify, this is in its infancy. We have been working with a very talented scriptor, Uhsuaia Tokugawa. The concerns we had of having a ferry or any other consistent means of travel to one point in the new continent was the obvious of what would happen to the land around one central landing spot. The same concerns many have expressed of having a telehub in the new continent.

For now we are testing a transport system that will transport you to any sim of your choice in the new continent. Just a word of caution to land speculators, the landing spot in each sim will randomly move each week.

This is how it works. Just north of the boat dock next to the railroad is a small island. There is a map of the new continent and a transport ball above it. You just right click on the transport ball and choose transport. You will then be asked to either say or choose your location from the map that is provided there. Once you select your designation you will be asked to confirm that choice. Upon selecting yes, you will be transported. The journey is very quick.

Excellent!

I had the pleasure of using this system last night!

Thank you Mash for working on this with Uhsuaia, and trying to make our access to the new world easier.

I was there with Ush the other day, giving this some test runs to the new continent! A whole lot of fun, that's what it was! I'm personally hoping the group transport comes soon so you can blast off with some friends in style! :)

Thanks for hosting this on your land, Mash + Bacc!

Very ingenious solution. I would like to see more "regular" transport like planes and ferries myeself. Still dont see why people on the North Continent are forced to live like primitives in the wilderness though.

It is a big continent. Why not just a telehub (one) in the middle? will have to happen enentually anyway. I dont understand why the resistance.

Dianne, the north continent is meant to be like the wilderness. It's supposed to be undiscovered, more rural, less crowded. Having an easy-access telehub would defeat that.

Sorry to interupt the new ideas of the transport system but i think that telehubs are coming soon, maybe in 1.6.2.

Maybe we could have a HUGE transport system all arround Second Life. Railways, airports, docks and even automated taxis!

Nice. I transported to Carolina very quickly. Then I came back and checked Home Depoz. I liked the Asian furniture section especially. Then I saw the special offer of free plywood lumber!

As you know, I already complained in the forums about the idea that a few old players who happened to buy up one of the prestigious "colour" sims should decide matters of public transportation that might more properly be left to our "government," Linden Labs, which has already created a transportation system and is still testing a RR.

I even suggested that far from creating "public land" with prices deliberately depressed to $2/ride for a ferry, those who grabbed the precious access to the waterways to the new continent should in fact allow healthy market competition, just as you have in RL.

I asked Mash twice whether his railroad is connecting to the Lindens' railroad because I think it's important that the public know when one railroad tycoon is talking to another railroad tycoon about our transportation needs. (Paging Jeff Brown!)

By creating a fast rail network, you effectively eliminate the need for a telehub. And that effectively devalues the land of all those who bought in the New Continent assuming there'd be a telehub.

And Linden Labs has sent decidedly mixed signals from three different Lindens in the last 2 days only fueling the telehub speculation. We still have no confirmation WHETHER they will go in or WHERE.

Many people are "certain" they know about this but in fact they are merely repeating a rumour based on only an interpretation of a letter sent by Ryan Linden to landowners.

I'd be happy to see rail, plane, boat telehub come to the new continent, maybe rail/road etc taking the place of so many telehubs.

But I don't know if I like the idea that public transportation is put in the hands of private players, even if they provide it "For free". They don't really, because the huge gain in reputation status for appearing to be a do-gooder, the traffic/dwell in their land, etc. means they get some non-cash awards for this coup of finding access to the old sim land in the prestigious colour district that now became 100 times more valuable as being in the gateway to a continent that might not have telehubs, or at least not very many.

Accordingly, I'd like to ask the Lindens to simply announce where the telehubs will be. This will end furious land speculation, rumours, and the gouging of prices in areas where people think it will be. And it will end the devaluation of land of people still buying not informed of all these issues.

And while I realize I'm being a sourpuss interrupting everybody's fun tekki wiki, the era when fun tekki wikis can merely proceed apace with lots of Linden dollars showered on everybody by the Lindens, there is now a broader public to contend with.

This public consists of:

1. Ordinary players who don't understand why they need to give you dwell points just to use public transportation.
2. Large landowners whose land you have helped devalue by your lobbying of the Lindens to put in YOUR OWN transportation hub in place of their normal telehub
3. Small landowners who may have looked to a telehub near them to help their business get traffic
4. Just the general public that could get to this area faster by telehubs than by your train, however kewl it is.

Honestly, these are real issues, debated with intensity in RL. I know it means I paint a target on my back to raise them. But they are definitely legitimate.

Why is it that the Lindens play three-card monte with telehub placement, spreading, or failing to control rumours, allowing speculation?

If they allow speculation as part of a land game, which might be something people will play, why do they then undercut it by letting some feted players take over transportation hubs?

Why do some players get to hold other players hostage to their public transportation schemes?

I think any private player running public transportation should immediately have dwell/traffic removed from their land. That's entirely unfair. An alternative might be to have every member of the public able to join their mass transit group and get their distributed share of the dwell. The downside is that still awards a dwelloper award to

Should someone who works and slaves for nothing to build a complicated railroad in this buggy, crashy game be rewarded? Yes, they should, by applause for their work, payment for their services, or recognition.

What they shouldn't get to do just by virtue of accident is get to collect dwell and also undermine other people's work and investments.

w00t one of my faves too! Were you able to get a copy of the assorted... well, it is more than plywood, isn't it? Last time I was there I couldn't but maybe Mash + Bacc have fixed that by now.

Prokofy,

I answered your question about the railroad before.

It's ok to cry foul and be sharp and pointed in the forums. This is part of what needs to be done here. It's legitimate dissent against the status quo. Get used to it.

My answer to you was and still is.

And, it's ok for me to play how I want....so get used to it.

What part of I GAVE the land to the railroad do you NOT understand. The railroad belongs to the railroad group, of which I am not a member, and therefore, am not privy to what their plans are.

A little lost on holding people hostage on using the transport sytem. I have better things to do with my time, than stand at the telehub in Periwinkle and force them to go with me to use the system. Not sure how I could do that anyhow.

About the dwell, most are not there long enough to create any dwell. But this is my soultion to YOUR problem. I will seperate the island that holds the transport sytem and put it in a public group. That way all can see the amount of dwell received from that system. From this day forward, I will be sending you the dwell money received from that location and you can distribute it to a sl chairty or service project, because we understand how high that ranks on your list of priorities  . BTW the amount of money I paid for the transport, it would probably take 5years of dwell to recoup my costs.

As far as Purple being worth more than it was when I bought it.....probably not. Most of the land was purchased back in what was the real land wars. But even if it was, isn't that why we all buy land. Think I recall something about you owning land in the new continent at what many would consider a strategic spot. Did you buy that with the plans on having a nice place to be or that it might increase in value?

I am really tired of your constant negative about anything and everything about this game and against certain players.

In contrast to Baccara's and my normal behavior:

Prokofy, WE will continue to play how WE want and just do us a favor.

STFU!

Have a great day!

Best regards,

Mash and Baccara

Prokofy - your question has be answered.

It's all about building empires and whose is bigger and who can piss the farthest! Prokofy keep score if you must, but remember, the more time you spend in the forms the greater advantage you give to us Wiki-Wonks and Wiki-Wanna-Bees and soon our empire will rule supreme!

You don't wanna end up on the trash-heap of broken capitalists, so get back to your SL!

As noted above, I said that I would separate the island that hosts the transport system. It is done. The land is now separate and belongs to a public group called Explorer's Group. This group is free and open to anyone who wishes to join. You many also set your home to there if you wish. It is also listed under the other category in find as Community Transport, so that all may quickly see the amount of dwell each day. It is located at Purple 158,224.

Also as promised, to make sure that the monies received from dwell are distributed appropriately, I will be forwarding any dwell received from that area directly to Prokofy. Prokofy then can decide what sl charitable organization or service project Prokofy thinks would best serve the entire sl community, because we understand how high that ranks on his/her list of priorities.

Trains and ferrys are all very nice -- personally I'd like to get a couple of small plots and do transportation by cannon :)

In Chaos we played around with several systems - with varying degrees of success..

Transport by trampoline, cannon, and my lil maglev chair system that circles the trailer park (the C.L.I.T. Ring).

Fun fun fun.

Siggy.
