It'd be more fun to do that with respect to you.. but you ain't worth the electrons either...

I don't know that it'd be fun for you Korg, because having revealed what kind of 'person' (and I use the term in its widest sense) you are, not a single thing you ever say to me is going to mean anything to me, other than a few moments amusement.

The funny thing is, I actually used to respect your honesty and straightforwardness even when I didnt agree with you. That seems to have morphed into utter contempt and vitriol for, well, everyone, and your posts are often truly disturbing of late, assuming that you actually believe 1% of what you spew. What ever happened to you? It's quite worrying to see such a monumental decline in someones mental state in such a short space of time.

You've actually become a kind of sad, comical caricature of the some of the most extremes of our community before you, such as Ragnar and Chris... who were rather tame in comparison. Still, you can be quite amusing for your ridiculousness when I can stomach to read your posts.

The problem is you are asking someone to essentially give up the opportunity to rip off, copy and make potentially unlimited amounts of money for a mere pittance.

On second thoughts, I think we can all assume that Korg didn't really intend on saying that this is something he would ever do but rather that perhaps this isn't an appropiate commercial incentive for people who might be familar with this sort of thing.

It saddens me that Philip even needs to put a bounty on it.

No, you misunderstand! I swear! Philip just wants it to be fixed quickly, since Bounty is the quicker picker upper!

*groans*

Oh, man, that was a bad joke.

And yet... i could not resist! Bwahahaahahaah!

Kris... you really put too much time and effort into your response. Trust me. You did.

You answer your own concerns about me leaving me no room to even consider responding to your points as you have already decided what the answers are.

Go join up with Hiro the Heroine wannabe. You seem to deserve each other in your times of need.

I will repeat my original post's point since you (multiple you's) seem to have missed it.

No resident is here to find and fix bugs for free - not as far as I know, and not as a primary purpose. Anyone who PAYS for such a "privlege" to do so is either completely altruistic (and I have yet to meet such a person) or rather dense in my opinion. Having been a bug hunter before, to offer a bounty of such a palty amount for a "bug" that is not a bug but a symptom of a poor coding effort or an error in design is rather insulting to those who have been bug hunters ---- it's saying, "This has been too tough for us to find but maybe you can and your time is not worth but x amount (a truly small amount)". You see, the cost of my time (or anyone else's) is now "priced to sell" by the corporation here - regardless of how long it takes to find and demonstrate, there's a fixed bounty of just 10K Linden - something the CEO has publicly said is a worthless currency. So, it's doubly insulting if you think about it. He's offering to pay you in play money. And only for this one... not for any other... but wait, you PAID for the privilege to troubleshoot his software - so he'll pay you back in worthless currency AND keep your money while you do the corporation's job for them instead of playing as YOU paid to do.

If that is not clear, or if that is "unethical" and pointless and despicable of me to say.. then, well, I guess I am despicable. But at least I am not blatantly stupid enough to fawn over the CEO or to waste my time looking for a way to "win" worthless play money while being insulted. I can get the insults here in the forum for a lot less effort.

My, aren't "we" dense, Hero?
Tell you what. You find and demonstrate the bug. Get the reward. Then give it to me.

That would be a nice gesture.

IMHO L$50,000 would be more likely to get peoples' attention, ten grand in lindenbucks is (quoting someone else) "chickenfeed"

Count me as one chicken who wouldn't mind being fed.

I still remember the days, not too long ago when I told my neighbor I had just reached the 5 figure L$ milestone for the first time. She replied that she doubted she'd ever see it herself.

So we were 1, 2 months into the game at the time and we've both seen that figure repeatedly since then... doesn't change the fact that it's significant to some, still.

The point is to make it more likely that a hypothetical person of unknown ethics will demonstrate this bug they hope doesn't exist.

The bounty assumes that most people in SL care about the long-term future of SL. I wish I could say this is so, but it is not always the case. So, the question becomes - would someone who really doesn't care about SL find a 10,000 L$ bounty as adequate?

I doubt this. They'd most likely want to continue to have an avenue to pursue their own copying interests. I admire the gesture, but again, SL is much different than the pre v1.2 days.

Or someone could totally suprise us and assist, which would be the desired outcome.

Only insomuch as I dismiss you and your obviously ill-conceived post(s).

What have I done "for" SL? Easy. I don't do anything "for" SL. It's not a club I belong to. SL is a virtual world I PAY to PLAY IN.

I think you are wrong here Maxx. The bounty seems based, to me, on the assumption of greed - by some individual who doesn't value his or her own time very highly.

I would think that if such a bug exists, would make sense to report it to Philip asap - even by those who would normally otherwise just exploit it for their personal gain. After all - if it does exist, eventually someone will be telling Philip, and that'll be the only person who'll have a chance at amnesty.

I know if I was Philip, soon as I knew the bug I'd be doing two things:
  1. Have the bug reviewed and locked up tight;
  2. Track down all others that used the bug (and didn't tell me) and have them escorted quickly from the system.

Once the bug is identified, it's well within the bounds of reason to expect that they could easily put out a way of detecting the exploiters, rouse them out of their ratholes, and then afterwards close up the hole. The only person who has a halfway chance of avoiding that fate will be the first person that reports the bug to Philip.

I think this is a great idea to help keep and fix a system that haas been buggy for a while. Unfortunatly, the system, when it is fixed, ends up creating another problem elsewhere, another loophole, and brings about another bug fix which creates another loophole.....etc, etc, etc. When I first started playing, I found a bug in the copy permission where if you take a no copy item, and place it in a prim you create, and them place that prim into another prim, then the item in the first prim will become copyable and modifyable. This was a long time ago, and it hasn't worked for a while as far as I know, and when I figured it out, I sent in a bug report, and they fixed it, and someone found another loophole. It's a vicious cycle, and Philip wants to make sure that they've found the solution to the problem. And by offering us, the players, the chance to help solve this problem, and ensure it stays fixed, it will allow the Lindens to focus on more of the "BUG FIXES" that everyone complains they want the lindens to fix.

As far as paying to play this game, yes, you do pay to play this game, that's fine, then do what you do and not worry about what the CEO of the game is offering to people who WANT to help. Just because you feel like being selfish, or you feel hurt because you think the reward is meger, doesn't mean that you have to tell everyone else to not look for the bug, or say they're not being ethical or smart about it. People will do what people want to do, and sooner or later this bug will be squashed, it's up to the person who knows how to manipulate the bug to step forward if they want to. And it might not even be an error in coding, you never know what the reasoning is. It could end up happening because of a lost packet somewhere in the transfer. It's the nature of the beast in online games. Stop trying to bring down others just because you feel that you just want to PLAY this game, and let others play the game as they choose to.

As far as someone wasting their time, that's their choice, no one is putting a gun to your head and saying sit here and look for this bug, nor are they telling you to sit there and belittle people.

Hmm, let's see, I don't care about the money but in the past there were a few ways to copy nocopy stuff. Notably:

a) Fly around with it attached and cross lots of sims. Eventually, you will get stuck between sims and have to relog. Your attachment is returned to your lost and found folder, still with the nocopy flag, except now you have two copies of it in two different folders. I accidentally duped a lot of stuff that way.

b) Rez stuff when the simulator is heavily loaded, and for a short time you would have permissions on it. This was widely in use a few months ago but I think it was fixed.

c) Drop a script on every prim, that uses llGetPrimitiveParams to rez a perfect copy of it that now looks like its been created by you. No way to fix this short of removing /crippling llGetPrimitiveParams.

d) Build a perfect copy of it manually. You dont even need to see the numbers, I have done this myself in the past. It's hard work but using the Z-flashing "feature" you can tell when two prims are exactly at the same size and position.

Maybe not cripple...just prevent it from being executed on objects you don't have copy permissions on?

I'm sure I even heard a meek "Yes, Mr. Spacely Sir!" after that.

Wow. There was a stealth topic hijack a few posts back. I'll stop contributing to it.

Hm, that would prevent a lot of clocks, watches and curtains I know from being sold...

Hmm, so let me get this strait in the view point of the community.

If a person reports it...they are a criminal.
If they don't and don't use it they are a criminal
If they don't and do use it they are a criminal

and the point of claiming 10k for a bug is again?

Honestly, I think it was cavalier that Phillip offered this reward.

Unfortunately, with the updates even the one I recieved last night I imagine they have already closed the initial loop hole.

The problem is what about the creators already burned?

In another thread I seen a who's who list of creators that have been taken advantage of over the permissions bugs.

What pittance do they recieve as compensation?

Nothing

This for some of those creators looks more like a "To little, to late" scenario.

I hope its not because some of these guys-n-gals have some awesome stuff.
