Waterhead area - zone it!

The waterhead sims are -lovely-. Its been awhile since i've seen anything so calm and naturelike... but that is not going to last.

Clubs will move in. Casinos will move it. Shopping malls will move in. And non of these will even bother trying to fit into the nature theme. There's going be concrete, neon, rotating signs, obnoxious talking vendors and money balls, and alot of them.

Not unless the place get zoned.

The place is still virgin, there's still time to save it. I hereby suggest petitioning to LindenLabs to save waterhead's future by zoning the area and its nearby related sims in such a way that all builds will have to be either nature based or nature friendly - nothing overly obnoxious to kill the theme of the land.

It will also be very helpful if it will be possible to allocate certain areas to generic construction/living and a certain area for commerce.

Lets save SL's little piece of calm and nature before it'll get ruined like so many places in the past.

To sign the petition, use the vote option above!
Please post why you are for/against the petition when you do.

I love the telehub, and to see simularly themed builds around would be lovely.

It'd be nice to see some large consistancy areas other than the typical mish mash of randomness all over.

Waterhead is a thing of beuty, to disrupt it would be to kill it, I think, it should either be proteted or zoned.

Gentle builds. The residents that have moved into that region so far have been doing a pretty good job of keeping things calm up there. There are the exceptions, but it has not been as bad as I first thought it would be. I think most of the settlers to that region appreciate the areas beauty and want to build gently and keep it peaceful. Lets hope this trend continues.

Friends of the Forest is a new group with open enrollment. We are accepting members and gifts of L$ and land tier to hopefully be able to claim a Linden grant of land to preserve in that region. The land tier will be the hardest challenge we will face, if you can spare any donation of land it would be greatly appreciated, every little bit adds up.

Isn't it strange how there's a little bit of a blue bar even though "NO" is at 0%? I guess it's creeping up on us. ;)

I voted YES because I like my casinos and clubs and malls in SL, but they need not be everywhere. Just like the real world. We need that diversity, and heck, now that we have a beautiful forest in SL, we'd better keep some of that so future generations of avatars can enjoy it. ;)

Even I, a neon zealot, realize that there is a place for earthy tones. (Hey, it's why I visit Mocha and Chartreuse... hehehe!)

Embrace the spectrum... come with me! :D w000h00

No. Linden-enforced zoning doesn't work. There are lots of examples of that. They don't have the time to do everything else they need to do properly as it is, so asking them to take on even more zoning enforcement when the ones they should already be enforcing they don't, seems like a non-starter.

Hmmm am I missing something, Moopf, maker of most excellent rollerskates? :) The original post didn't specifically mention "Linden-enforced zoning". An alternative possibility, of course, is a community who owns the land enforcing themselves thematically. A good current example is Slate with their "zoning", and there are others across the grid.

There used to be a much higher ratio of themed vs. normal sims. I think SL was better for it. Then, De Haro, Boardman, and I think Green and Brown had their restrictions taken off. I think it would be good to have some of the new sims set to have some kind of zoning before they go up for auction. There are already countless leagues of land where you can build garish structures. Let's protect some of the new land.

Waterhead rocks right now, because:

- It looks great and natural
- It's extremely fast and low-lag

I vote "yes" to any measure that will keep it this way.

I voted yes. It should be left in a natural state for people to enjoy. I don't think newbies should be confronted with lagging clubs/casinos and huge malls on their arrival. Plus how many more do we need of each of those? None in my opinion.

Yes, zoned is a great idea as we need to experiment more with zoning.

Zoning is a good idea. Linden zoning won't work though. It needs to be watched by the players. I am proposing setting up a group that can oversee the area, and keep it clean (i don't think pristine is possible, but we can do that best we can), that will develop the land within a theme, and give all residents a "taste" of SL. We'll include all of the features of SL (yes, even the clubs, but we will attempt to do it without the lag, and keep it within a theme), a mini-mall (watched closely and still keeping within the theme), and some artistic and homely builds that will give all residents a taste of everything SL has to offer. If you're interested in helping me iwth this endevour, send me a PM.

Yes, protect/zone it, it's sometimes a crying shame to see beautiful areas lose their coherence under random development.

Let's make an exception here...

Experiment. Give it a whirl. Why not ?

Who can it hurt ? There's more than enough land around now, so surely the 'cram it all in everywhere' pressure is off.

If it really doesn't work (by whatever criteria is applied to such things ?) then humble pie can be eaten and the situation reviewed, but once heavily developed it's gone....

I vote yes.

I've got some land in Sawrey, and I've tried to keep the buildings on it as unobtrusive as possible. (I've also spent a lot of my prim limit on adding to the landscaping - waterfalls, a little stream, et.al.)

I know its unrealistic to expect LL to not auction off the Lost Lakes/Waterhead Telehub land. Its also unrealistic (in most cases) to have people buy the land and just sit on it - no builds, no nothing. I wish I had enough $$ to pay for land tier to do so...but it just ain't happenin'. (Extra kudos to the Friends of the Forest group for doing what they're doing. Loki, I will have some extra land tier after all, it seems, I'll IM you later this week to donate.)

However, it seems much more feasible to restrict the types of builds to a specific architectural "feel" - keep the garishness and obtrusiveness to a minimum, and try to stick to a "nature-friendly" look and feel. Its not that hard to NOT use your shop's 10m high flashing neon sign, ya know.

We can say no to clubs, personally, I don't like clubs, but I think it is a part of SL right now, and people come here for that. We can also use it as an experiement to build a better club, one that doesn't cause alot of lag, that LOOKS good, and people still get the same effect. The problem is that so many people want to get the clubs up and running, and don't try to minimize script effects and lag because all they're concerned about is making the money. This would give people who aren't looking to JUST make money to better a big part of SL right now. Clubs will be in SL, there's no denying the fact now, but it's the difference between just sitting around complaining about them, and trying to do something to help create a better world. What I want to do is get a group together, of like minded people, to discuss and create an area that gives a taste of SL without all the lag. It is possible in my opinion, and if you feel that you hate clubs, then do something about them and help figure out a way to improve the idea rather than living with them.

Keep a few places to nature
12-02-2004 06:18
I think that we need a few places that can not be developed so that we can enjoy them natural aspect of life. There are many places for your shops, casinos and clubs.

I voted No because as Moopf pointed out - Linden enforced zoning hasn't worked out. I also shuddered when I read the rules for Luskwood Estates - I could see their potential to severely limit creativity. (I'm not slamming Luskwood - it's great for those that want the control, it's just not what I would choose to build in).

I don't think that the land should be sold at all. I think that it would be wiser for the Lindens to lease the land to specific projects (similar to Neverland). This would make the welcome area more interesting and still achieve Linden's objective. It would also keep the area from being degraded because if the person or group who leased the land lost interest, eventually the lease would need to be renewed and the Lindens could lease it to someone else with a different idea.

Since this is the welcome area I also think that there should be some area reserved for the mentors and instructors. The welcome area is a newbies first induction into the real SL and we should have help for them close by.

Just my 2L.

I have a park in Mimas that has just had a _huge_ casino built not 10m from it in the next sim. Please dont have this happen to this area.
