A question to all those people who, unlike me, think that a poor, innocent child was the victim of goverment repression, which I think is everybody else in the thread.

If a child of yours had an art class at school, and asked you if he or she could take a pair of scissors, would you not, for a start, wonder why the school wasn't going to provide them if they were needed?

Assuming that you got a satisfactory answer to that question, would you then provide your child with a pair of 8 inch kitchen shears to take to school?

Schools should be providing plastic Scissors with round tips. Remember the movie "Escape to New York"? That's where we're headed.

It's very likely that the school can't afford to provide scissors for kids to use. If the girl had threatened someone with them THEN arrest her. Until then they're just a pair of scissors. It's a fucked up country when you can waltz down to walmart and buy a rifle but kids get arrested for having a pair of scissors at school. I guess they'd better arrest everyone with a pencil too. Someone could lose an eye.

It reminds me of flying. I went through security once and they took my Mach 3 razors. Basically I could have dismantled the razor head and then had a sharp and deadly 1" blade on the plane.

I was flying first class and when dinner was served they handed me a big metal knife to cut my food. I had to chuckle.

Sure she could use 8" scissors to stab someone. She could also use an ink pen or pencil.

At least she wasn't left-handed. Do any other leftys out there remember those little rounded green-handled left-handed sciccors they provided in elementary school? The ones you couldn't even cut butter with?

So now you're saying she is an evil lefty with a butterface ?? Neehai I am appalled :p

There is nothing evil about Lefties!

The discrimination I have faced as a homosexual pales in comparision to the discrimination I face as a lefty.

Scissors, desk returns, baseball gloves, camcorders, screwdrivers, golf clubs, guitars.

The one recent invention that is great for lefties is the CD Jewelcase. It must have been designed by a lefty as we have no problems opening them up at all. From the moment they first became popular I watched people fiddle with opening them.

Growing up in the South there were still people who thought left-handedness was a sign of the devil and there were other kids in my school who were forced to learn to write with their right hands. Teachers would restrain their left hands and force them to do everything with their right hand.

My mother went crazy when one of my teachers approached her to explain that this option was available for her left-handed son.

I've called (on my left-handed phone!) the and ALHCLU (American Left-Handed Civil Liberties Union) is looking into this case.

Remember in school when we were taught about the brain?
The left side of the brain controls the right side of the body.
The right side of the brain controls the left side of the body.
Therefore, lefthanded people are the only ones in the right state of mind. :D

P.S. the occasional left handed cigarette doesn't hurt either

She shouldn't have been arrested for bringing scissors to school...
Now, if she was running with them, that's a whole 'nuther ball of wax..

When I was in middle school, I accidentally brought a pocketknife into school. I took my key out of my pocket, and it fell out.

I was RELUCTANTLY suspended for two days, and only because it was in the rules, and "The rules are the rules". What the FUCK is up with this?

This is absolutely the most insane and assinine abuse of power I have ever read in my entire frickin life. It seems the US is hell bent on criminalizing even the most innocent among its citizens. I suppose pencils and pens are the next to go, maybe plastic utensils. You know the schools should just outfit the student's desks prison kitchen style, pencils, pens, scissors all on tethers in an effort to deter the students from shanking one another. I suppose this must happen all the time, though I have trouble finding abundant enough references to prove their actions necessary.

Why the hell wouldn't the school principle just confiscate the "weapon of paper destruction" and send a letter to a parent to retrieve the terrorist implement. Why, one reason, it is easier to call the police, scare the hell out of a kid, make an example of her for all those other paper cutting munchkins and prove to the world that they are pro active. It is easier to react than it is to act in a logical manner.

Blehh this just makes me sick to my stomach. Won't be long before we will all be considered terrorists and criminals.

The Pen is mightier than the scissor... will that be next?

My issue wasn't with Fox News. They just happened to be the link presented. As I said, printing a 10 year-olds name in this type of situtation is just bad form in my opinion. AP, Fox, MSNBC, CNN or whomever.

That came from the below statement...

But yes, I agree that the news people in general screwed up. Stuff like that's gonna happen...

Reading between the lines of the article, I got the impression that the school concerned was a pretty violent place.

It's easy to draw a quick conclusion from a slanted article, but often when you read it more carefully the message you draw from it is the opposite of the original one.

Exactly what I thought myself. I'd be shocked if this happened in a "nice" school.

More and more I am totally sickened by this. I just showed my wife the article and boy is she now pissed off. "Just following the rules"? Rightttttt! How many tragities have humanity had to suffer because some folks were "Just following the rules" or "Just following orders". I for one don't beleave this kid is in any way a criminal! It is those that would deliberatly do this to her that are the criminals. Stupid is as stupid does, and boy are they fu*kin stupid in the extream! There are two quotes that come to mind (Oh no Adam, not more quotes! hehehe).

"When rules are carved in stone, there is no justice." - Captain Jean-Luc Picard

"When has life ever been as simple as a rulebook." - Commander William Riker

And too release the child's name? That is just journalism at its worst. No surprise there unfortunatly. Need to ask how bad they can get, just ask Lady Diana about it. Oh yea, we can't, cause the news media hownded her to her death!

Selador - Sometimes it is not an issue of the schools not having the supplys but insted a particular teatchers style of teaching all the kids. My wonderous daughter who is 8 wasn't even allowed to bring a pencil to school one year because the "new" teacher wanted all the kids to be the same (suply wise) to make it easyer to teach them all at once. Talk about trying to kill a person's individuality and self-expression.

Neehai - Your airport anology is perfect! There is so much hypocricy in the good ol' USA that one could walk on it all the way to china! Drugs are illegal, but cig's are one of our biggest buisness. Drinking has killed many, many people, but still the good ol' usa sell's licqure by the keg full. I bet if you searched all the teachers/principles desk, you would find many a thing (like scissors) in them. And you are correct that there is nothing wrong with lefties! I one had a teacher friend who is completly messed up (left/right hand wise) because when she went to school, they switched "how you can write" (left handed or right handed) at least 3 times before she graduated. Totally messed her mind up so now when someone ask's for something on her left side, she automaticly now goes right. She can't even drive now cause it has gotton so bad. How sad is that. :(

Nolan - Great pic there dude. However in some of the schools around where I live, he woulden't get into the building due to his hair-style let alone his hands! Now that is REALLY stupid!!! Banned cause of hair-style......

It's like I have always said, a 'person' can be fantastic, but get a bunch of us 'people' together in an organization, and we can become as*holes very quickly! Be carefull folks, be very carefull, cause the "crusades" are now once again upon us. God help us all....... everyone...........

UNION, W.Va. (AP) - An assistant state fire marshal who cited a Monroe County teacher for having her classroom door propped open with a rubber doorstop has dropped the charge.
Sixth-grade teacher Susanna Robinson had been set to appear Tuesday morning in Monroe County Magistrate Court to face a charge of violating fire safety rules. She faced a potential fine of up to $1,000 and up to 90 days in jail.
Assistant Fire Marshal Charles Vanatter retracted the charge on Wednesday without giving a reason.
Robinson teaches at Mountain View Elementary and Middle School in Union and used the doorstop to prop open her classroom door to keep the room from being too hot. Vanatter says the door should remain closed because the corridor wall that contains the door is a smoke partition. The door must be able to close if there is a fire to hinder the spread of smoke.
The school built in 1999 has windows that do not open.
Vanatter had confiscated the door stop on Nov. 9 when he issued the citation but returned it to the school on Wednesday.

Monroe County schools Superintendent Lyn Guy defended Vanatter on Thursday. "I was as surprised as anybody else that a citation was issued, but I think he's been painted as the devil incarnate, and I think he was just doing his job."

Robinson said she will no longer prop her door open now that she knows it's against the law, but she acknowledged that it has been very hot in the classroom at times. One of Robinson's students, who wrote a letter in support of his teacher, compared the classroom to "a volcano" when the door is closed.

Child is the key word here. She is a child. A child who made a poor decision, a child who's desk was being searched because the teacher was missing something from her desk, a child who (from our knowledge) has no prior "record" and a child who is now a criminal likely being sent to a "special" school where education takes a back seat to discipline. What is the purpose of this action? I assume the end justified the means in that the school did not have to take the responsible action of confiscating the scissors and calling the parent. This is sad and if it is the norm my decision not to have children has been cemented.

This happened to me as well. My parents sent me to a evangelical school for k-3 where it was considered evil to be left handed. They "laid hands" on me and made me sit in a cardboard playhouse to practice the "right" writing. I have the same "dyslexic" tendancies when it comes to left right differentiation.

LOL - Same here - the Catholic school I went to (and my grandparents) thought that lefties were demonically possessed. The nuns used to crack the back of my knuckles with a ruler every time they caught me using my left hand to even pick up my pencil. My grandparents used to crack the back of my knuckles with a butter knife if I used my left hand at the table. (I walked aroud with some really swollen knuckles on my left hand for awhile).

The bizarre thing is my ex was born right handed, but in his (very Italian) family they believed that the first born son should always be left handed and did the same to him - only with the opposite effect.

You should have seen us trying to move furniture together. :D

Gotta love religion and superstition.
