This is absolutely the most insane and assinine abuse of power I have ever read in my entire frickin life. It seems the US is hell bent on criminalizing even the most innocent among its citizens. I suppose pencils and pens are the next to go, maybe plastic utensils. You know the schools should just outfit the student's desks prison kitchen style, pencils, pens, scissors all on tethers in an effort to deter the students from shanking one another. I suppose this must happen all the time, though I have trouble finding abundant enough references to prove their actions necessary.

Why the hell wouldn't the school principle just confiscate the "weapon of paper destruction" and send a letter to a parent to retrieve the terrorist implement. Why, one reason, it is easier to call the police, scare the hell out of a kid, make an example of her for all those other paper cutting munchkins and prove to the world that they are pro active. It is easier to react than it is to act in a logical manner.

Blehh this just makes me sick to my stomach. Won't be long before we will all be considered terrorists and criminals.

We are allready. The great department of homeland security can monitor everything we do,without cause or justifcation, other than to (ahem) protect us.

I seriously have to question Fox News for printing the name of a ten year-old child being arrested for having scissors.

These things happen when we all live in fear of being sued. In my day (early 1970's), the teacher would have confiscated the scissors, and probably called the parents. No lawyers or superintendants would have been brought in. Now, everyone has a lawyer, and kids are just SO fragile.

She was named by the Associated Press, whom that story is credited to. Not Fox News.

Well, whatever media outlet. Fox News republished it.

I just don't see the purpose of printing the name of a minor. No matter who did it.

...Some of us are just desperate to find something to complain about since it was Fox huh? :D

"Administrators said they were following state law when they called police Thursday, and police said they were following department rules when they handcuffed..."

Sounds like the problem falls somewhere in this area if my guess is right...

In defense of why this may have happened, and assuming a few things, I'm almost certain it happened in a problem school in Philly where there are serious violence and disciplinary problems... ... not that it isn't absurd.

Also: it has nothing to do with "terrorism" (that's silly), pretty obviously in my opinion, it's a school violence issue/law/policy. (In a somewhat liberal state and definitely liberal city...?)

And also: I will also guess  the news people were being stupid printing the name, maybe since it didn't seem like an actual crime had been committed they weren't thinking about that (perhaps they let common sense get the better of them for a second). Or, maybe they had permission to print the name? (ok probably not) For all we know that Fox page is automated and was never even proofread completely (let alone actually edited) by a single Fox employee, but I think we can question the AP writer's judgement.

Wow I'm going on and on tonight...

Uh... scissors... dress code... swearing... damn, I would never be able to get into an american school! oO
When I was a preppie we were specifically instructed to get REAL scissors for a "textiles" class... and x-actos for drawing class as well. No one lost an eye or anything.

Reading between the lines of the article, I got the impression that the school concerned was a pretty violent place. It's interesting that the scissors came to light when the children's desks were being searched after a theft from a teacher. It's also significant that the article describes not a little dainty pair of scissors, but an eight inch pair of shears - something that could make a deadly weapon.

It's easy to draw a quick conclusion from a slanted article, but often when you read it more carefully the message you draw from it is the opposite of the original one.

Someday, schoolchildren will write on circles of paper, use "safety" pencils, and all construction paper will be die-cut in curved patterns. Crayons will be banned and white glue/paste will also double as school lunchmeats. :D

Truer words were never more spoken.......... It's times like this I am ashamed to be an American......... Whats next? "OMG he has a 'straw' and could poke someone's eyes out!!! Artest them! Who cares if it's a 2 year old; cause we don't!!!"

My issue wasn't with Fox News. They just happened to be the link presented. As I said, printing a 10 year-olds name in this type of situtation is just bad form in my opinion. AP, Fox, MSNBC, CNN or whomever.

And if I'm not mistaken, once a person is "arrested" thier name would now be public record, would it not? Not that it's right and I'm not being a smart ass :D but I'm pretty sure arrest records are public records but not sure about the minors rights in there.

God this is sickening.

12 y/o charged with first degree murder for supposedly accidentally killing a young girl with "wrestling" moves, Florida, FIRST DEGREE MURDER???

Wasn't the 10 y/o in Chicago charged with 1st degree murder for shooting an 18 y/o with a f*** up rifle he wasn't even sure worked right???

In alot of places, juvenile criminal records are sealed when they hit 18.

Her records are not public but her name has been published for public record. She has been vilified and criminalized by a system bent on pointing fingers and laying blame, a system unable or unlwilling to distinguish a valid threat from a stupid decision made by a kid. "We did it because it was state law" I'm going to call bullshit on this one. Even if she is from a "bad" school, how does that make what happened ok. She is a child guilty, so far as we know, of nothing more than bringing mom's shears to school. Will they arrest every child who makes a poor decision just because other children in the same school have malice on the mind? The true idiots are those pigs (I mean school officials) who actually had the child taken downtown. Nice, embitter her to the legal system, make her fear police and authority over a pair of scissors. Any way you cut it, this was wrong.

Yes and what about toothbrushes, after all you can melt them down into a shank if the school cafeteria only has plastic sporks. Sporks break after one attempt at stabbing the mystery meatloaf so are of little use for eye gouging and such.
