I would strongly recommend that you check out the schedules that they have for medical students/residents. Some medical schools really overwork them. Perhaps less now then in the past.
Its a rather grueling course to take. Perhaps consider Physicians Assistant. The money is good and your hours are fairly well set. The education is difficult, but at least doesn't go on for years. If you insist on going - then go to Stanford or some other top school... but also consider going to University Medical Schools - like U Conn or U of VT.  _____________________

I understand the amount of work, sacrifice, and dedication it takes to go through the full medical school and I'm willing to go through it. From what I've read, it's all designed for maschocists.  But I'm willing to do that.I'd consider any competent medical school, but I also need to retake the MCAT since it's been 10 years since I've taken it, as well as take courses that I never had like anatomy that would have helped on the test. I have a BS in Chemistry ACS from the University of Wyoming. Just looking for RL medical doctors as even though I volunteer at the hospital, I'd like to have as many mentors as possible. I work mainly with nurses in neurology and help out in the ER at ORMC in Orlando, FL. Doctors are usually too busy to deal with volunteers. I am considering PA as an alternate course, if reality sends me that way. I'd prefer to shoot for medical school as that has always been my dream, but I definately want to be in the medical profession in any way that I can. I've been a programmer in the scientific field for the past 7 years, which isn't terribly fulfilling. It's high-time (and hopefully not too late) for me to pursue my true dream while I still can. _____________________

Sounds to me like you've already made up your mind. FWIW, to me, time in medical school is NOT lost time, time out of your life, time sacrificed. It's time with a great deal of learning; time spent with people on a real level that matters; time sharing and working with a close group of friends. If you work in a hospital now, then you know what you're getting into. Good luck to you and I hope you enjoy every grueling, joyful, tiresome and interesting step of the way. |
