the primary reason i dumped all my other "game" accounts was the ability to build, texture and landscape. i played mmorpgs primarily for the 3d roleplaying aspect. but was always hamstrung by predesigned graphics and skills.

this is what i was looking for all along.

the primary reason i'll stay inworld, once duplicate services are available, is the people. i suppose i don't do much to recruit or retain those people. i just like them.

For me it's the following three things in combination. You can't really rank them.

1) Creativite freedom. This means both the creative rights and IP controls built in, and the flexibility in being able to create just about anything or a pretty close version. It's not monopoly or chess it's finger paints and building blocks!

2) Social openess. A friendly chat room and the opportunity for specific interests to go off and get together for just about any reason! Prayer, charity, disscusion, dancing, roleplaying, game playing, plain ol' acting stoopid - there's room for everybody!

3) Financial security. Stuff you make and business you start have real value and that value is protected. You can pay to play, or play to play, or even conciveably play to pay out!

what matters in sl?

keeping the grid up and letting us all do our thing.

why?

'cause we all like doing our own thing

what do you do wrt it?

I do my own thing

And if others like my own thing, then so much the better. If they don't like my own thing, then so be it.

The community of the SL world is my primary focus - and what i can do to make a difference in our community - hopefully positive.

I find value in the tangled web of people, groups, shared visions, communal and individual accomplishments, the dynamics of frustrations, shattered expectations and the joys of problem solving.

Being part of this virtual world at this developing stage is very exciting!

What matters to me is its sense of community, of being part of a group or groups that have common goals.

This was a central theme in Uru Live (which was in part a social MMO game). Obviously that makes Telador one of my favorites here, but the varying people who just like to help are just plain cool - and almost unheard of in an MMO envoronment. That alone is what helps keep me here.

What I do with it now is to learn what I can. What I eventually want to do is help people here, via joining Mentor group, TLC, and/or related groups.

I always said while playing other MMORPG's, that if someone would just develop a sandbox, and give me the freedom to build what I wantd, I would be happy.

Ever since April 2003, I've played only ONE online gme; Seoncd Life.

What matters to me? The Community, the friends, the shared visions, the joy of watching somone's project come to life and succeed and know I helped in creating it.

what matters to you in sl?

The ability to create things in an unrestricted manner. The freedom and the tools.

Also - the ability so see what others have created. I am always amazed at what I find has moved from peoples minds into this wonderous digital world.

why?

There a few places left in RL or in any other virtual world even where you have the freedom to create whatever you want to and the actual tools to do it with.

In RL (where I live) there are so few avenues for creativity left because the RL focus is on looks, success, power & proper behavior. Few care anymore about beautiful gardens or how animals behave, or about vanishing everglades or wilderness areas. For me, RL feels so plastic & "virtual" that it gives me the creeps most of the time.

In SL you can invent things without all the legal BS that you'd have to go through in RL. You can create the things missing from RL and then go there.

what do you do wrt it?

The first thing I did was re-create where I used to live in Canada (British Columbia), then I created an Anasazi Ruin and now I'm working on mystical gardens and animals. Who knows whats next? In SL I get to glide above the worlds in an airship created by a friend or put myself into a giant bubble and slam into other people in giant bubbles.

In SL I can create my dreams. In SL People still laugh and create.

Yeah - that too - the forums keep me laughing when I am bored out of my mind. This post just reminded me of that.

I really came here for the fun, the exploration, the creative aspect, the unified diversity -- not always ideal but sometimes it's a beautiful thing to see -- things like that. I like to observe and learn about humanity.

I like how Second Life is pretty unique, and how it doesn't put a mandatory strain on my time (I choose to invest) and I can just go zooming around and seeing stuff. Now that I'm actually here, I like to see happiness come out of doing "virtual" things, and see how very real romances can blossom, and how people can get very real enthused feedback on their pixel creations, and I like a lot of the offbeat surrealism I'm surprised to see when walking around. There's more reasons. :)

The friendships I have cultivated in this brave new world

Because they have become as important to me as my rl relationships.

As Camille said 'cherish them".

One love.

Btw that is a beautiful answer Merwan. Your kindness and altruism are to be admired.

The three things which matter to me the mostest are:

1. The chance to stop by and gape at Psyra's Avie-o-the-Hour, not to mention whatever that THING is RacerX is working on this week.

2. The opportunity to periodically annoy Clio Anansi and Steffi Westerburg. Actually, this should be #1, but I'm too lazy to move it.

3. Occasion to wander around my vacant land like some bankrupt opium-smoking Victorian squire, promising myself that I'm going to Personally Build The Most Spectacular House In Game, while I save up my L$ for the hour when I publicly testify that my building skills suck by running out and buying one of Maxx's Dome Homes, which I will then re-texture Hot Pink with Zebra-stripe girders, for the benefit of my sim's property values in general and my neighbor Alexander Daguerre in particular.

Thanks for asking!

Seconded, thirded and fourthed.

When I look back at the reasons why I bought practically any other software games, or the reasons why I MUSHed/MUDed etc., every one of those reasons is fulfilled (and more) in Second Life.

Creativity, mostly. I enjoy molding self-contained environments. When I was very small, I would design spaceships, write stories about their small communities, assign job titles and romantic pairings to the imaginary people who populated these worlds I dreamed up.

This is my dream come true.

what matters to you in sl?
1. Building lasting relationships and a sense of community.
2. A creative outlet that challenges me to think about much greater possibilities than I might otherwise conceive.

why?
I dunno, cuz I like it? Seriously, though, I have met more people and have forged more friendships here in six months than I have, over the past five years or so, in RW.

what do you do wrt it?
1. Spend an inordinate amount of time reading these blasted forums.
2. Much more vocally express my opinions, both in-world and in the forums.
3. Attempt to be a support and encouragement.
4. Sometimes build stuff, though I am a horribly impatient, immediate gratification kinda creator.
5. I have all but abandoned television.

1. Creative freedom. Personal spaces. Ownership. Pride of ownership. Entertainment.

2. I love the feeling of being able to sit on, survey, and hike around my own land, knowing that I can smooth out little bumps, erect a building, plant a tree any time I want to. I love seeing what other people have done who have felt the same way. And I love to be able to play bingo while half alseep in bed, knowing all I need to do is click my mouse on the numbers, and press the enter key to win ;)

3. I want to own vast swathes of virtual land - make it an appealing environment. Share this with others. Sit and watch the sun go down. Know that others appreciate my work. Help others get to the contented place that I am in in Second Life. Solve their frustrations with the tools. Open their eyes to the possibilities. Spread my enthusiasm.

LOL! SL is a TRUE cultural revolution. I was thinking, just the other day, that I could happily exist in a one-room studio apartment with just a bed and my computer/cable modem. Heck with McMansions, nice cars and fancy job titles! They can't compare with the real world...whoops, I mean the world of SL.

Oh, and if my ISP weren't Time Warner, I too could drop cable, completely. It's a pkg deal. ;)
