maybe it helps with the uncanny valley effect
05-24-2005 11:02
http://www.arclight.net/~pdb/nonfiction/uncanny-valley.html
the lack of small motions (e.g. shifts, fidget, etc) contribute to the uncanny valley. the motion of the bling might cause people to percieve the slightly motions that make avatars seem uncanny. the human visual system processes motion in different parts of the brain than shape, color, and faces. sometimes motion in one place gets confused with motion in another location. also the bling might distract from the uncanniness. and people might just like bling. _____________________

I'm going to start a new trend. It's called BLANG. BLANG is bling to the nth power. If you've ever seen a case of bling so extreme that your graphics card starts to melt and simulatiously screams "HELP MEEEEEEEE" in that creepy voice from "The Fly" then you've been privy to the awesome power of BLANG. The only thing more attention-getting than BLANG is a particle script that spews graphics of giant hammers hitting you repeatedly over the head at a rate of 150 per second. Ok, now THAT made me laugh out loud. Now my boss wants to know what the hell I'm doing ![]() Please, someone, help me? I have diamond jewelry that I love (it looks so hot with my black oufits). But /bling off does NOT work. Why is that? I'm blingin' and blangin' til my eyes burn out, and I need hep. Cindy _____________________

I have started adding this twinkle script to the jewelry and shoes I make with diamonds on them. Reason? Without some type of glimmer or sparkle, with just plain diamond textures, they look flat and dull. I make it because 1) I like it, and 2) my customers want it. The sparkle is pretty. I have my rate set to about one sparkle every 5 seconds, and the start and end particle size as small as it will allow. Granted there are many items out there entirely overdone, but what can you do but laugh? As far as I've been told, particles take a back seat when it comes to resources, so if the resources aren't available, the particles don't display. Furthermore, there is a setting in your preferences where you can set the max particle count that your client displays for you. With that said, lag and resources should not be an issue for you.
So it comes down to taste. If you don't like it, feel free to avert your eyes. No one is doing harm to you with their "bling." They do no more harm to you by blinging than you do to them by talking trash about what they like. |

Bling is about as tacky as the introduction of fake 'lens flares' into late 80's/early 90's CG films...

I don't mind them. They actually make things less flat. There are some that get to the gaudy stage, but most look ok. I don't wear bling though. I adorn myself with kitties and frogs. Now if there was a blinged out frog, ooh I'm soooo there.

I have started adding this twinkle script to the jewelry and shoes I make with diamonds on them. Reason? Without some type of glimmer or sparkle, with just plain diamond textures, they look flat and dull.. I've seen some of you stuff and it looks really nice - that little flash (I'm thinking of putting one on my teet) is quite pretty... but not all bling is created equal! there's bling, and then there's BLING!!!!! (as demonstrated by Torleys pic) -- use of a little effect can really add to something.. alas in SL way too many overdo it.. The result is usually neat, but gaudy - sort of like an elephants arse bowtied with a bicycle chain.. Siggy ![]() _____________________

Long as it's not hurting anyone, and it's not, I am just amazed everytime I see someone trying to tell others how to play their game, ya know? Let'em have their bling. And confession: I'm a white girl down with Snoop Dogg, fa shizzle.... although it almost got me in trouble once at work when I said "fa shizzle ma nizzle" while not knowing at all what it meant..... one of my black friends at work was kind enough to clue me in that I shouldn't go around saying it, being white and all.... but then he went ahead and told everyone, so just as well had been saying it all over the place! Will never live that one down.

I have a tiny twinkle in my jewelry so that it doesn't blind or cause seizures to others. It is very subtle and more pleasing to the eye. Although I do have some customers who want me to add the bling to their rings!

I have a fondness for bling but only indulge fully in it when all around are comfortable -- and I've warned them properly. Problem is the escalation tendency, when someone tries to outbling another and then it just climbs from there... you know how that goes, "I got a 1-carat diamond ring and it really shines!" "Well I got a 2-carat one!" "Hmmmph, mine's 50 carats and BLINGS LIKE DONALD TRUMP'S HAIR!" etc. Fo shizzle, mah avatizzle. ![]() _____________________

You know what will lag you 10 fold the amount bling does? HAIR! A nice pretty head full of spiral torus prims will grind you to a freaking halt. There is no "max amount of spiral torus" in preferences. There is something worthy of griping about, but ya just don't see it brought up much.... and why? Because it isn't resources people are worried about. It isn't "lag" that has people running their mouths. It's the "better than you and gonna tell you what you ought to be doing" mentality.

Hi Stormy. Well, while certain Residents are going to be having that sort of attitude, it's a generic generalization to apply it to so many. A result of this thread being casted in the first place has been the sharing of opinions to see what's going on. Each of us here is a unique individual (so I'd hope) and each of us has our reasons for being for/against bling -- oh wait, it's not even that binary. There are a lot of fishies in the water, so to speak."Hoochie hair" is actually brought up a lot, often coupled with "bling" in fact; there's a lot of humor that can be applied to the situation, and maybe it's better if we get to have a good laugh the way Siggy, Juro, J-Wu, Nol and I were the other day. Fascinatingly, as I've alluded to, the "better than you and gonna tell you what you ought to be doing" mentality comes into play amongst bling enthusiasts too. Some believe bling should be only reserved for a select group, that they can be the blingiest. How bling is that? It works on many levels. With hair, I've heard a similar argument used to turn off complex prims from sight ("IF MY HAIR'S BOTHERING YOU THEN MOVE YO' CAM OUTTA DA WAY!!!123" , or to lower Object Detail. That will speed things up as well. But then again, you might as well keep turning off features, and reduce SL back into the days of Zork. ![]() Mai pen rai. _____________________

I agree - in cases like that I usually refer them to the handy link in my signature line ![]() Besides, when particles of ANY kind get excessive - I just turn them off - or lower the max in prefs.. After all, one mans mona lisa is another elephants arsehole - and vice versa. Siggy. _____________________

Particles are such a simple thing to turn off and don't really depreciate the quality of the picture on your screen, like say, object detail would. I turn them off regularly, especially when building..... they're so obnoxious when you're building and can't even see your prim because of the particles streaming towards it from your hand. Anyhow, I may not be quite so eloquent with words, but I do know particles have never lagged me, and hairstyles have brought me to a halt. This is a fact no matter how you twist it. My machine might be a bit too strong to be effected by particles as much as some. Who knows. But I stick to my guns here... some people just like to bitch, period. I shouldn't feel the need to defend what I build and/or wear when I know I'm not harming anyone, so I won't anymore. Carry on.

i have the feeling some builders hide the crappyness of theyr jewelry by adding these damned oh so fake flashs, i mean if you really built something great, why hiding it behind shitty particles? Everybody now can do bling itsot like it would be something new
