If they had disk arrays (RAID) done right they would need ZERO downtime, it would be hot swappable. My guess is if they are using something like MYSql, they may not even be using RAID either. Or not right. Sorry just my honest experience and perspective.

I didn't read all of the thread. But if just a disk blew, why does it take hours to fix? Offline rebuilding of a disk arrays doesn't take half a day!
