Well, today, I've learned some more, and realized I forgot about "r" for 'are' or 'our'. But "TY" and "YVM" I've never heard until today - 'thank you' and 'you're very welcome'.
As far as long windedness goes, I've never really had an issue with what i'm typing taking too long. If someone in a normal (okay, not FPS) setting needs to shorten 'you' to 'u' and 'are' to 'r', chances are their hunt-and-peck speed is just about even with me typing it fully.
Now, FPSs not withstanding, I've seen plenty of apparently middle aged soccer moms on the 'net' talk like this - people who would never set foot into an FPS.
I've gotten "official" emails as well with this kind of speak. Try as I might, I can't take this kind of communication seriously. I've probably been damaged by reading too much.
And, Kris - as far as the 'making fun of you for being a brit' thing... What's that got to do with typing in shorthand? Personally I've never seen anyone make fun of someone for being British on here; I especially wouldn't do so, as I know that most Europeans hate Americans so I wouldn't want to antagonize. "Labour" or "colour" doesn't bother me, nor does "donno" or anything like that.
Things like "donno" or "gonna" are colloquial and dialectical, and actually I think, add to the casual candor of a person typing - it's the only way you can indicate tone. (Except for capitalization.)
..but "omg u r 2 gr8 rotfl ty 4 ur gr8 stuf, omg i'm going 2 b l8! GTG! LOL!" is going to make me want to drive a nail through someone's eyeball.
And yes, between Kompressor and Kraftwerk, I do not dance, but I -am- the operator of my pocket calculator.

I agree wholeheartedly.
Having spent many years on AOL, IRC, message boards, and now my short time in SL, I fail to see how the same people can spend hour after hour, day after day at their computers and not learn to type correctly. I would assume laziness, but that can't be it if they make the effort to include 40 extra punctuation marks in every sentence.
Typos happen to everyone. I'm a crappy speller. We all have our lazy moments. I turn a blind eye to any mistakes made by someone who does not have English as a first language. But any adult who can't type out the word You or Are or Great needs to find a hobby that doesn't rely on typing so much for self expression and communication. You come across like an ADD 12 year old on a Jolt high.

This thread reminds me that I never laugh in real life *sniff*. Oh, and that I hate net speak, because they're all kids. And any adult that speaks that way is a damned retard...am I allowed to say that? Damned retard?
...damned retard!

uh... i am not big on typing. had not done much since high school. capitalizing and punctuation is difficult for me as i have to pause to hunt for the shift key. i also have to pause to insert any number or anything above the alphabet keys.
so i never use (pause)2 instead of to. i am seriously hooked on sl, and started developing carpal tunnel symptoms. yes, i use u instead of you. i sometimes use no instead of know. i really am just trying to communicate efficiently. i see that my improper useage of the english language is making people think i am stoopid and cannot reed or rite or spel.... i m sorry.
i c people using =) like it was just easy, no problem, just do it out of hand with no thought. i have to look, and think about it to do that, i never do that as a consequence. so some short hand is acceptable according to the typing elitists.
it appears that which short hand is acceptable depends on the elitist who is talking.
u are reffering to my method of communication here as netspeak, i did not know that it had a name. i saw some being used and picked it up here in sl. it just seemed easier to type that way is all. and i never ever use lol. or any variant on that theme. if it is funny my avatar laughs.
so i guess all u people who have wonderful typing skills can look down on me and consider me a stoopid kid when i talk in game. this is the first i knew that people thought that way about how i communicate.
love
Marilyn Murphy (i will be much quieter in the game from now on)

From: someone Originally posted by Michi Lumin Maybe I'm just too much of an old timer on the 'Net (1980s, oooh, faraway dark time -- ok i'll admit, it was a dark time) but I'm sick of people typing like:
"OMG LOL u have 1 of those 2!!! thats gr8 thx!! ROTFL! I wish other ppl had 1 of those like u do."
Way to save two keystrokes, people. I think the problem is though, this sort of "OMG LOL I JUST GOT TEH ONLINE I GOT MAIL LOL!" way of speaking is becoming normalized. But I can't take anyone seriously who uses any of the following:
u="you" 2="to" gr8="great" ppl="people" thx="thanks" 4="for"
and any overuseage of LOL, OMG and ROTFL or its variants.
(I've never used LOL in actual conversation - perhaps that's because I do not laugh, and, much like Kompressor, I do not dance.)
... and so on. Yes, the meaning comes across. But it comes across in such a way that you look brick stupid.
Or maybe not. Maybe it's the new era, and like OMG, u got 2 talk like all thz ppl!!!!!@!#! I got 2 words for U! BITE ME

From: someone Originally posted by Milo Bukowski Oh, how I hate "u" and "ppl". And I really hate "ur" for "your", becuase I read it phonetically as "er." What I also find annoying is the use of the ellipsis (...) to subsitute proper punctuation. One period at the end of a sentence is all you need! mILO....uR B-IN AN aSsHoLE!

From: someone Originally posted by Oz Spade I dislike the whole cell-phone talk thingy too, I do not get why they can not just type properly, I'd like to see them get a job with that "thoze 2 rprts r going 2 b late omg! im lke soooooo sorry , luvz u kizz kizz thnx!", bah, stab you with a pen I will.
I only use "lol" when I think something is genuily(sp) funny, I don't always actualy laugh, for some reason I find "lol" less odd than typing "hahaha", and I only whip out "lmao" when I'm really laughing.
I've always found ROFL/ROTFL/ROwhatever to be a bit silly... I've never been fond of the "rolling on the floor dieing of laughter!" expression. omg NOT U 2?.......well I dislike ppl who look down their noses....when they really dont have any RITE 2 judge....I didnt know that it was a prerequisite of SL.....well its a shame that you who are so appalled by the Text Messageing would say such a thing....since the majority do use it in some fasion....I have taken notes on who hates it and will be annoying you with it in world at every opportunity..... hugz

Yeah hate this myself. Not so much because it isn't English, but moreso because people start to use it reflexively.
For instance, in EQ, in my guild, the expression "ffs" got introduced by one of the more popular members. Within weeks, EVERY single time somebody said something it either started or ended with "ffs" (which is the equivalent of "For God's sake!", with a certain four letter word substituted for the inline deity).
However, I always did envision a very funny SNL talkshow skit where the hosts would speak as much as possible in netspeak.
Something like...
"So Guest1432, you IM'd her to e-vent about that? LOL! Wow look you made <sidekick> ROFL! That's the G-R-8-est! Would love to TM (throat message) more, but we need a commercial afk!"
"Next to log into the chat chair will be Guest1433..."

Oh! You know what I started seeing in EQ that I HATE and don't get? "kk"...what does that MEAN? It's not ok, it's not k, it's kk. Does this stand for something that I just don't use in my every day speech?

Just another way of saying cool in a cute ethnocentric manner. Briana Dawson

haha! I despised the use of KK in EQ as well! But, my friends always used it, and well, I may not like stuff but I it doesn't mean I hate someome for it. Hate the action not the person right? And Marilyn, I have talked with you a lot. And you do occasionally use "u" in place of "you", but honestly, for the most part you type out just normal words. I think the frustration being expressed here is about people who just take it to an extreame. And tend to do so on purpose. I doubt most anyone would group you in with the type of "typers" being referred to here.
