People who use 'u' for 'you'.

Maybe I'm just too much of an old timer on the 'Net (1980s, oooh, faraway dark time -- ok i'll admit, it was a dark time) but I'm sick of people typing like:

"OMG LOL u have 1 of those 2!!! thats gr8 thx!! ROTFL! I wish other ppl had 1 of those like u do."

Way to save two keystrokes, people. I think the problem is though, this sort of "OMG LOL I JUST GOT TEH ONLINE I GOT MAIL LOL!" way of speaking is becoming normalized. But I can't take anyone seriously who uses any of the following:

u="you"
2="to"
gr8="great"
ppl="people"
thx="thanks"
4="for"

and any overuseage of LOL, OMG and ROTFL or its variants.

(I've never used LOL in actual conversation - perhaps that's because I do not laugh, and, much like Kompressor, I do not dance.)

... and so on. Yes, the meaning comes across. But it comes across in such a way that you look brick stupid.

Or maybe not. Maybe it's the new era, and like OMG, u got 2 talk like all thz ppl!!!!!@!#!

The occasional LOL is fine, as long as it isn't used preceding the start of every sentence and before any punctuation.

e.g.; "LOL thatz gr8 LOL!!!!" / "LOL how have u been LOL!!!"

I've seen this. I don't understand what's so funny. Perhaps I just left my nitrous oxide in my other pants.

wow, michi, it's like you plucked that rant straight from my subconscious mind :)

I HATE netspeak. Just type the damn words already!

It's already affecting kids... teachers are reporting more usage of netspeak in term papers and stuff, for crying out loud.

Ridiculous.

your typing elitist,

the occasional 'lol' or any of the laughing netspeak terms (rofl, lmao, roflmao, etc) are fine occasionally.. otherwise, i'm pretty much against it.

EXCEPT.. when using a cell phone to text message.. then it becomes necessary.. both for time to respond and to make efficient use of space available.
..i would HATE to type everything out on a phone.. ugh!

LOL.. heheh.. couldn't resist :D

For some reason in second life I get sucked into using lol too often and "hehe" also. Even omg on rare occasion. That's it about it though. I find it really annoying when that is someone's whole way of speaking. I've never seen that in SL though and only a couple of times in the forums.

Oh, since I'm on the subject I went to Google.

ROTFL - 187000 hits
ROFL - 491000 hits
ROFLMAO - 98,700 hits

I'm still on the subject. I don't know why this thread has caught my imagination but my imagination is, well, different I guess. I checked out the internet wayback machine to see the ratio of rotfl to rofl in the past to now. I couldn't make sense of the results. They say keyword searching is in beta but I'd say that's a stretch. It needs work. They did a Google style response to roflmao of

I read somewhere that only 37% of the time did the person actually laugh when using *LOL*

There's a lot or orphaned *lol's* out there, if any one wants to donate just 50 cents a day....

The last time I logged in to There (about two months ago) I was approached by a female av who said "u r cute r u str8" (sic). It's things like that that keep me out of There and in SL since it happens to me much less frequently here.

I LOL on a regular basis, but I rarely ROFLMAO. And usually when I type LOL, I am chuckling, chortling or even snorting IRL; if I actually cut loose and laughed out loud, my husband or kids would look at me like I was crazy. I do, however, often catch myself almost saying "LOL" in conversation.

I dislike the whole cell-phone talk thingy too, I do not get why they can not just type properly, I'd like to see them get a job with that "thoze 2 rprts r going 2 b late omg! im lke soooooo sorry :'(, luvz u kizz kizz thnx!", bah, stab you with a pen I will.

I only use "lol" when I think something is genuily(sp) funny, I don't always actualy laugh, for some reason I find "lol" less odd than typing "hahaha", and I only whip out "lmao" when I'm really laughing.

I've always found ROFL/ROTFL/ROwhatever to be a bit silly... I've never been fond of the "rolling on the floor dieing of laughter!" expression.

I agree that this type of "speech type" gets on my nerves. I would never say anything to the person doing it, but it does affect my overall opinion of the person. BRB and AFK to me are fine. A few others don't bother me either. It is mostly when a single word is shorted to a single letter or two that it starts to affect my nerves.

Now, LOL. I use it like there is no tomorrow. haha... I really honestly do laugh all the time. And when I say LOL it does mean that I'm laughing even if on the inside. When I say hehe or haha, it means I'm smiling. And I use =) *all* the time too. Unfortunatly, I can't stop myself. I once tried to cut back, and found myself getting literally depressed. Mainly because I found myself repressing my laughter. So, if you are around me and see me LOL or =) or saying haha a lot, please know that it is sincere and don't hate me. :D

Flip side of the coin is that people then take the piss for the amount of time it takes you to type something in full, and the long-winded way you go about saying it.

So I've tended to shorten stuff to combat that... mainly stuff like 'you're' and 'your' to 'ur'. But also sometimes because I type it how I say it... I use 'cuz' instead of 'because' and 'i ono' instead of 'I dont know'.

And I do LOL a lot - but like Pen says, only when I really am laughing. And I laugh a lot in SL ('cept over the last few days because of certain t*ssers).

So yeah, guilty as charged. Feel free to hate me if you like, cuz I'm not overly fussed either way :p

Shame on you, Kris. A true geek can type fast enough not to whine about the amount of time it takes to do it :)

Yeah, Eggy, but I get enough hassle from mericans purely for being a Brit (it's the whole jealousy thing) so I can do without the 'omfg! u writing an essay there? ladadadada *sings three versus of Star Spangled Banner waiting for Kris to finish sentence*' as well.

Don't mind me. Sucky fuckin day.

I'm probably guilty or something worse, though... I affect an accent in SL. I do this pretty much everywhere I type to some extent or another, but in SL it seems to have become more pronounced...

I tend to type things as I would say them in real life... "I dunno" "Prolly not"... Or I just use words in a very strange manner... "I'm not like to do that"... Or I use archaic/odd words... "I don't reckon so..." or "In truth, I think the eldrich scrawls of LSL are the darkest sort of witchcraft"

But, like I say, I also tend to talk like this in real life, soooooo...

the use of short forms like u and so on is a very common thing in First Person Shooters (where I originate from)....for a simple reason...type a lot = die a lot.

So you restrict everything you say to the shortest form...unless of course

My boss at a major media corporation uses "u" and "ur" in emails to our department. He's a horrible human being in many other ways as well.

My roommate teaches AP english.

Some of these students frequently turn in 8-page papers containing netspeak.

These are AP STUDENTS!

Sigh. Kids these days. . . Where are we headed?

*guilty of using lol on occasion, but never where a plain =) will do*

Oh, how I hate "u" and "ppl". And I really hate "ur" for "your", becuase I read it phonetically as "er." What I also find annoying is the use of the ellipsis (...) to subsitute proper punctuation. One period at the end of a sentence is all you need!

I'm guilty of the latter *alot*... :)

I normaly do it when something I say isn't exactly a complete thought, or I'm still thinking as I type, or something.
