The first time I logged into SL way back when, I was on the Orientation Island working on my avatar. I ended up stark naked so I could better deal with body shaping and suddenly someone named "Linden" started talking to me. I thought the Orientation Island was my own private spot. I couldn't figure out how to get my clothes back on and I couldn't move the camera to see who it was so I had a very embarassed naked conversation with this unseen unexpected (but helpful) person.
You know you're not going to come out looking good when your conversation starts, "Please excuse my nakedness. I don't know how to put on clothes."

In TSO I had been a great builder! Was hired by other players to build houses there. I was very eager to try building! I this overly confident tso builder through help from zephyr fate figured out how to rez a prim.... not really paying attention to directions.. .I set to work.. I was going to make something WOW, a big splash into this SL world....... two days later...*sighs*... I a humbled builder.... sat upon my lopsided attempt at a bench.. with the various prior attempt prims scattered about * didnt know how to delete yet* me. Im happy to say over a year later... Ive figured out how to build somewhat and realize now.. twasn't the bench was lopsided... just me jk jk Great thread Loki

LOL, these are great tales, keep 'em rolling... I figure if enough are compiled, we could have a treasury -- perhaps even roll 'em all into a storybook of some sort. This is the kinda "my first time" memories that have gotta be preserved! While first impressions aren't the end-all, they may very well be the begin-all. From: Taeja Diaz I started during beta and there weren't a lot of players. So upon entering SL for the first time, I was in the starting area where you could learn how to alter your avie a little before making your way to the welcome area. So I'm standing there playing around with my avie and I see this message in the top right hand corner of my screen that said BEN LINDEN was trying to exchange calling cards with me. (I guess Lindens were a little more attentive to new ones during that time.) Well i misread that and could have sworn that it said Ben LADEN! I remember declining his offer to trade cards with me and trying to fly away as fast as possible. (You can imagine how well I was doing with flying with it being my frist time..)
HAHAHA... OMG... well you know, that Ben-go! is a sinister tool of subversivism. I remember annoying Mistress Midnight with it after replacing the stock boing sound with something that sounded more like a "dying seal" in her words, IIRC. There are conspiratorial overtones to Ben's Fishing Game too . . .

Well I had just moved into Lusk. The proud owner of a tiny lot but I was happy amongst the trees and the paved streets. My poor little lot was bare but a very dear lady and gent took me under their wing by the name of Fey and Zane who lived in a beautiful house just across the street. Fey soon invited me in to see see her lovely home and I was thrilled. It was lovely furnished 2 story with stained glass windows and working doors. I was very impressed. Soon she invited me upstairs to see the rest of her lovely home. Then and there I realized just how very new I was. No matter how I tried to get up those beautiful stairs I just could not manage it. I tried for a good 20 min. God bless Fey's patience with me back then if it weren't for her TPing me I probably never would of left Lusk. That I still chuckle remembering how me and Shadow came into their wedding looking all dapper in the clothes that Fey had made for the occasion. Unfortuanly I forgot all about my shoes. Fey laughed so hard yes I was so embarrased but the ceramony went on and I spent the rest of the night shoeless (if I wasn't wearing any panties ty for not telling me) Cat

My newbiest moment was after applying to the then Land For the Landless program (ahh, memories). After posting in the wrong place, being directed to the right place and basically writing a dissertation about what kind of land I wanted, I got the IM (in email) from Char that L4L plot was ready to be claimed. I told her I wasn't online and she helpfully gave me the coordinates link so if I clicked it it would load right up to SL from my email. I clicked the link and in those days the LL land links did nothing but pop the map open on a Mac and always linked to the wrong location. So I noticed it had a box to type the numbers in so I did that and hit Teleport. I flew for what seemed like an hour to Gualuaga (sp ) and landed at the beacon. The land was magnificent! It was everything I asked for -- quiet, beautiful, on the water, low-lying and nestled on an estuary (my own island -- SCORE!). I stood there waiting for a while for Char to show up. She didn't. *scary IM sound (can we fix that?)* I'm here at your new land in POMPONIO, where are you? Uhm... Gualgagagagagalagagaga? Hehe ... okay, I'll TP you. *poof* I'm wisked into the ether and materialize on... A rock. And not just ANY rock ... this was an ACTIVE VOLCANO! I looked around, saw Char and she explained how to buy the land. I said "wow thanks it's great" but was really disheartened... I hafta live on the sheer cliffside of an ACTIVE VOLCANO?! Oddly enough, I now live on an active volcano I built in Rose, albeit nowhere near the scale of Pomponio! Oh yeah ... and the unlinking physical objects to make an adjustment thing? Guilty. My problem is I always forgot to take a copy BEFORE making changes! Nothing like seeing your beautiful humpback whale blow up in your face and realizing that you have to start over

After being in-world for a couple of days, I got the build bug bad, and abandoned my free trial to get a full account. Then I began my search for land, eager to make my mark.
Flying about, I finally found a little piece I could afford in a sim called Jessie. I bought the land, which was under a pool of water for the most part, and started to use the land editing tools to get at least some of it raised and dry. Next thing I know, I am teleported to the Welcome Area. I'm puzzled and think I somehow did something wrong with the land editing tools, so I fly back and decide to stop editing the land and start building.
Since I had no idea how to build, I was veeery slowly trying to place a floor, when BAM, I'm teleported to the Welcome Area again. This happened several times over the next hour. Each time I'd try to build, I'd be teleported. I was so bummed, thinking I'd spent all my L$ on a defective piece of land.
Finally, one time right before the teleport, I heard the sounds of gunfire, and only then did I notice the little message flash on my screen, super fast, saying that I had died and was being teleported home.
I couldn't figure out why anyone would want to kill me, but when I reached my land again, I saw that it was damage enabled, and though I couldn't see my neighbors, I knew they were just waiting out there to shoot me again. So I plopped down my trusty newbie cabin, covered it with a zebra striped texture, put the land up for sale at a about 120% of what I had paid for it, and got the hell out of there. Sure enough, someone bought it that same day, and I moved on to more friendly areas.

While cuddling for the first time with a gal on pose balls and she says "hide". I nearly got up and ran figuring her boyfriend had shown up.

HAHA!! I read that line and LOL'd (yay for working from home!) and said "hoo boy, I know where THIS is going. (slight thread hijack) My favorite thing to do to annoying newbies who shoot at you in the Welcome Area is to give them a landmark to Jessie, where they can take their frustrations out constructively, and seeing them arrive back in the WA in a matter of seconds shouting "WTF?!"
