This type of thread has probably been done before, so sue me. This is just a chance to laugh at ourselves and share the funny things you did as a newbie. Just a fun thread to show we all been there before.

When I was brand new, I took a cabin out of inventory. I didnt wear it, but I did rez it on top of myself and I got trapped underneath it. I didnt know what to do and I was getting desperate. I finally figured how to move it with the arrows and I freed myself. Then, I didnt know how to delete the cabin, and I didnt want to look like a newbie and leave it laying out for everyone to see. So, I used the arrows and laboriously drug it about 200m and put it underwater so no one would see it. I flew away embarrassed. I learned how to delete things and when I remembered it was there, I went back a couple of days later and deleted it.

Loki, that's an awesome story :D Especially from the guy that finally clued me in how to properly manipulate textures on a prim...for which I'll be eternally grateful, BTW.

I think my biggest n00b moment was the classic standard, box-on-the-head. Of course, there was the first time I went to Lestat's and someone told me how to dance, and then I couldn't stop and was to embarrassed to ask for help, so I danced right out the door and flew away, still dancing. Thankfully you stop when you port.

I will admit that I still have n00b moments when it comes to slang. Like the "kk" thing. Still have no idea what it stands for, but I use it because I THINK it means "ok" or "ok cool" or something like that. I hope.

I think walking around Galleria City half naked was my biggest n00b moment. To make matters worse, I couldn't stop dancing while I was there because I didn't see the big red button at that says "stop animation" at the animation store.

It might seem embarrassing to some, but I do far more humiliating things to my avatar now that I know what I'm doing. I wore the asshat on my face for an entire day day recently.

Ok show of hands, who walked around naked in a club asking how to put your brand new "tool" on? Come on you know you did it.

I had been in SL about two weeks and was wandering around Stillman looking for freebies when I found a box that had a picture of a guy wearing a vest. I really liked the vest so I clicked on the box to take a copy. It would only allow me to buy it at '0' dollars, so I bought it.

The next thing you know ....

I'm a big, ugly, bald, hairy guy!!! OMG!!

In the meantime, my friend is IM'ing me to go for a ride on his airship and I have to explain to him that I'm looking a bit different these days and I don't know how to "get back to my old self".

Fortunately, I had accidently made a copy of my original AV by saving everything to an outfit and someone kind person who was also shopping the Stillman freebies helped me out.

It was pretty obvious that I was in a gender crisis because the big bald guy was wearing a skirt. :D

I've been in SL for 2-3 weeks and I love it. I took to building right away. Anyways, I was in the sandbox by the welcome area building an old 50's car when I managed to attach a side panel of the car to the back of my head. I looked like the Flying Nun. I had no problem getting it off, but it sure as hell looked funny. I still don't quite know how I managed to do it....

Changing Clothes
01-25-2005 08:21
As a newbie, i thought that you had to take off all your clothes to put new ones on. I would be anywhere and decide to change clothes and sure enough take it all off then search my inventory for another outfit to wear. Then I began realizing that people are actually seeing my nakedness and that no one has this same problem, so i began hiding behind trees and taking off all my clothes and finding new ones to wear. Anyhoo, I can now say I change clothes pretty quickly without showing off my nudity as long as everything rezzes right.

Rezzing a box on my head....

Digging through my FREE CRAP inventory while at a mall waiting for a raffle, and thinking "Girl's MadCat" meant one of those little kitties, and rezzing it to see what it was.

Well, apparently some people can't appreciate getting squished by a giant purple battlemech, before I could delete it I got nailed by a lagspike and disconnected.

I attached numerous boxes of freebies to my head before I figured out how to get the stuff out of the box.

It took me a while to get the hang of flying a vehicle at all in game, and dealing with the lag/controls. My first several attempts just resulted in me going from a dead stop to catapulting across several sims, hundreds of feet up in the air, and stopping suddenly as I get my craft stuck in the side of someone's house or the side of a mountain. I've accidentally run over some folks in the starting area too. Whoops.

Trying on the newbies "bubbles" pants in the Welcome Area.

Had no idea what they were, so I tried it on. With my crappy ass computer, the texture didn't rez on me. Then someone came up to me with a "drooling" emote. I had no idea what was going on, so I was just typing out "heh" and "oook...".

Then Psyra(sweet birdie) said something along the lines of "Maybe if you put on some ACTUAL pants..." Still confused, I changed pants, then teleported to a place where it was less crowded. I was finally alone and tried on the "bubble" pants again....it rezed....I was literally screamed "OH MY GOD" out of embarrassment...

I did the exact same thing, but I learned the first day that people could see me naked. For a week I would fly around for 30 minutes looking for a beach that noone was on and change clothes.

The one that sticks out in my mind was on my third day, and a friend of mine passed me a landmark to a shop to check out. I went over to have a look, and it happened to be in a fairly busy club, behind a closed door. I had NO idea how to get the door open - I kept trying to step on the right place on the floor, or walk under the invisible sensor I knew must be there. I asked for help, but everyone must have been too busy dancing. I tried ramming it over and over again. I must have looked like an idiot.

Finally someone came and opened the door, and I followed them in, but then I got stuck inside after they left.

In my early days I'm surprised I didn't get reported or banned for my screwups, which included:

Accidentally rezzing an enormous barn on an event, which engulfed both the stage and the audiance. Guess what ghosted?

Riding around and trying to steer what I thought was a giant toy blimp on autopilot. Then the av hidden inside told me to knock it off....

i used to shoot guns in sandboxes without reading the signs. that was pretty greefous of me. (oh and i remember Morris when it was titled Sandbox instead of New User Building Area i thinks.)

i also used to wear boxes on my head -- like items that were sold in boxes, not knowing how to remove them from Contents. Kex helped me a lot with that, so thank-you Kex. ha ha ha. it was humiliating in an earnest way. (and i should be sleeping now, yikes.)

i also once unlinked a many-primmed thing and then didn't know i could use a selection rectangle in yellow to delete it all, so i was busy selecting piece by piece and tapping Delete rapidly.

or, the time before i learned how to texture individual sides of an object, and had all the faces of a synthesizer-box with the keyboard faces on them, albeit squashed and disorted. :)

i also wondered why i couldn't drag clothes to a sandbox to rez them and fold them into neat little laundry piles.

these are some great stories, keep 'em rolling.

I unlinked a physical car in Cordova once, and just about died laughing. I went back an hour later and was still finding tires and body panels.

One time I was finishing up a very high prim car model (I never intended for it to drive) and was rushing to get to a show and tell. After I had my turn I went to delete it and discovered I never linked it! So I'm up on stage with everyone waiting for me to leave, individually deleting 137 prims. I was fairly new and didn't understand all the selection tools, like Select My Objects Only.

Oh, one more: when I first started, 1.2 had just been released. So I'd been reading all about taxes, and how you get charged for rezzing anything, but you get your money back if you delete it. So I bought a motorcycle for a few hundred $L (which was a lot to me on my first day!). I took it out for a spin and didn't really get it, so I deleted it and was stunned to not have my money refunded! And it was no copy :(

I remember rezzing a section of my SL house on my head.

Oh wait...

That was last week.

Nevermind.

got to be a tie between the time i thought dragging a folder with a couple attachments onto your self would just add those attachments to your outfit (oops....naked) or the time i thought it was ok to unlink a big physical object to make one tiny lil adjustment (boom).

Oh the memories....
01-29-2005 03:44
I have written elsewhere about the time that I arrived at my first proper SL party to find that a vagina box had mysteriously crammed itself on my head. Although I did the head in a box thing often (and occasionally still do) it really wasn't my fault. I had bought and attached my attachment, and cleaned up the boxes properly, but nevertheless, there it was. And it wouldn't come off. And the TP was blocked. I was skilled enough to make it invisible and floating above my head, but not knowledgeable enough to know that people mousing over me wouldn't be able to see what sort of box it was. So I rushed in, copied the freebies and logged before I could die of embarrassment.

When I wasn't very new, I discovered what dragging a folder with only some shoes in would do, in a PG area. I had transferred all the non-copyable items from the folder into another outfit, and forgot.

The funniest noobie moment I had in SL came when I and a friend organised a birthday party for Ratt Foo's birthday. We had this great idea for making remote control Rats, and we had it all organised - we set up rat racing lanes, numbered them, provided everyone with a numbered rat and a vest with numbers on and places for the avatars to stand above them so that they could control their rats....

That was the idea, but most of us were too new to have had any experience in controlling remote controlled stuff.

These were vicious-looking, red-eyed monster rats. The first task was to get on the platform. With a lot of cheer leading from my friend Zap, people got onto the platform. I then tried to get on, but stumbled and knocked half the people off their platforms. Then fell off again myself. With my second pass, I got most of the people I hadn't knocked off before. Zap was trying to explain how to paste co-ordinates into each rat's edit menu so that they would be placed in the starting position, and some people pasted the wrong numbers and their rats made off for the horizon, while others, who had pasted the numbers in the right places, got bored with waiting for the rest to catch up, and started racing their rats, some of them sitting on their backs.

Even those who did everything correctly found it difficult to control the rats, and so there was one person circling round, digging holes in the ground with their rat, another who was desperately trying to stop themselves being dragged through the walls of the house next door, and others were still diligently following the instructions from Zap about how to get ready for the race. My rat vanished when I put the co-ordinates in and I had to get another.

It was chaos, and Zap's calm in the face of the chaos just made it all the funnier for the rest of us. I got some rather sniffy comments from neighbours who found rats abandoned all over the sim. I *still* can't control remote control stuff....

HAHAHA OMG that's a hilarious story... what's with Ratt Foo and rats anyway? More than just the name? It's very apt, in any case... I enjoy his Ratt Hatt and shoez.

So Embarrasing...
01-29-2005 06:49
You know after thinking about this, my experience was not only embarrasing but incredibly stupid too.

I started during beta and there weren't a lot of players. So upon entering SL for the first time, I was in the starting area where you could learn how to alter your avie a little before making your way to the welcome area. So I'm standing there playing around with my avie and I see this message in the top right hand corner of my screen that said BEN LINDEN was trying to exchange calling cards with me. (I guess Lindens were a little more attentive to new ones during that time.) Well i misread that and could have sworn that it said Ben LADEN! I remember declining his offer to trade cards with me and trying to fly away as fast as possible. (You can imagine how well I was doing with flying with it being my frist time..)

So finally i meet up with Crisitano Midnight, my boyfriend, who agreeed to be my guide and I tell him about my experience with Mr. LADEN and i go 'omg you guys have terrioists in this game?' and after he finsihed laughing his ass off, he explained that his name was LINDEN and not LADEN and who the Lindens actually were. Talk about feeling like a first class a-- :o

When I first arrived in the welcome area, I was so scared I'd do something stupid, I wouldn't even talk to people. I was too overwhelmed and just couldn't deal with talking on top of everything else, so when some nice person would say "hi" I'd fly away! Sorry to be so rude!

My second day I found my way over to Lestats. Didn't look like anyone was there (how was I supposed to know what the little green dots on the mini-map were?) so I thought I'd be safe exploring the place without having to talk to anyone. Somehow managed to find my way upstairs and... Hmm, what are these little balls on the floor... Oh! WOW! Does it really do that? I couldn't figure out how to open a box, but I sure figured out those little balls quick. And I had a BLAST trying each and every one out, pink, blue, whatever! Woo hoo!

After a few minutes I someone "lol"'d and someone else said "Those are more fun if you have someone to play on them with." I freaked and tried to run away but couldn't for the life of me figure out how to get back downstairs. Just as I was about to hit Cmd-Q, the guy said "come on, I'll give you some better clothes." My desire to get out of my fugly striped shirt was stronger than my pride so I followed him outside, where he spent the next 20 minutes trying to explain how to open a box. I finally gave up and flew away, with the obligatory box on my head, of course.

I still play by myself on the sex balls whenever I find them; I feel like it's kind of my trademark. But now I scan the map for green dots first. ;)

Well, since you aske Loki :)

My newbiest moment was not being able to fine tune my creations. I would create a cube, a sphere, a pyramid, but I could only use the boxes to stretch, the arrows to move, what the hell kind of F***** UP system is this I cried!

Then my neighbor, laughing, told me to press the MORE button. Lo and Behold there it was, not I can create perfection; and I still do to this day :)

Now, a newbie moment I witnessed, and I won't say WHO LOKI, but I'm sure the culprits will remember it.

I was having a SL Basics event in DORE, when a group of NEW MENTOR's who were CELEBRATING their arrival into MENTOR LAND came parading through an active event each wearing houses on their heads and bodies. As they paraded around and through the event my level of frustration rose and rose and rose. Until FINALLY I had to ask a Linden to have them removed. Ironic that I had to report a bunch of mentors for griefing a Mentor Event.

Of course, the offending Mentor's apologized for their actions, they seriously didn't know what was going on, they just figured it was a group of people hanging around talking, and they wanted to make everyone laugh :)

SO, that's my two cents, I just wonder Loki, do you have any houses I could wear? :)

My first or second day in SL someone gave me about 10 folders worth of free stuff. Since I didn't own land yet, I was on Siggy's land in Taber, checking out the cool new stuff. One of the items I rezzed was so small I lost it, and didn't yet know how to zoom to find it. I forgot about it went on about my business. About 2 weeks later, Siggy notices a small item on his floor and clicks on it. Female genitals, owner, Jonquille Noir. :o
