Well everyone, since we are comming close to the end of the year, I thought it would be interesting to see what you all think was the most popular Thread Topic posted for the year.

It has been very interesting for me the 2 months that i've been in Secondlife and have learned alot as I hope we all continue to learn from these topics. I won't be on much after today as tomorrow is my Birthday and then Christmas Holiday with family.

Thanks too everyone for making this year interesting and sharing your opinions and friendships.

From the information i've gathered in my opinion according to the highest number of replies to a Thread for the year goes to...

I think we should have a new rule, no more than 7 new threads per week in the general forum.

Anyone who breaks this rule is leaving themselves open to flaming.

Not harsh enough IMO. A good public hanging never hurt anyone, and should do a world of good.

You might want to include "Respect" in that issue. Please don't hijack and post out of topic issues in someones Thread, that is disrespectful.

blake, take it from me, because I should know: monopolizing the conversation on the SL general forum is not a particular wise thing to do.

I tried it once (ok, maybe twice) and I got flamed pretty badly even by people who were 'friendly'.

This is just one of those social things we all need to do even when we're bursting with ideas.

If you're still bursting and need a release, try setting up an event in world and hold a round table or discussion event. I think you will find that you will get a lot of takers.

Or create some ALTs and post with those, if you haven't already. It's a strategy that seems to work for some. You may find it a bit confusing keeping track of all those personalities though..

L$100 to start a thread
L$10 to reply

THAT would rock.

Unless your name rhymes with "flake", in which case I would suggest that we up the cost by a factor of 10.

They probably were all eradicated during the great forum purge of November (/me is slowly creeping back up to the near-500 post level...)

Maybe we should create a separate thread for the "most infamous" threads, but the Alby crusades and the SL governance threads rank up near the top.

Blake Blake Blake...

Well, it's not a poll, and it's actually an interesting question. Wow, it has been a year filled with so many things, including some pretty volatile threads. Many of the most heated don't even exist anymore, as early on in the year, the deleting hand of the law was quite swift and severe (not so much anymore, now they just tend to lock, which is an improvement).

I think it would be impossible to pick a single thread, since there have been so many topics that have been discussed at great length across many threads: first auctions and early problems with them (sniping, lack of proxy bidding, etc..), then the commercialization of SL when good old Fizik & Co. came along and bought Avalon. That then was followed by the rise of the land resale market and the topic that launched a thousand threads, the Land Barons. Whee, that topic still persists today, but it reached its peak when land prices spiked in late summer to previously unseen heights in SL.

The land baron threads eventually gave way to something even more heated - player government. Perhaps its because it was an election year, perhaps its because Ulrika can stir the pot like nobody's business, but something certainly poured gasoline on that topic and lit a match. For now, it seems to have died down a bit, but I am sure it will flare up again.

There have been hundreds of little hot button topics in between - avatar sex (thanks, Zoey), clubs/casinos/malls taking up resources in a sim, furries, TOS notification letters that didn't tell you why you were actually in trouble, developer incentives, permission problems on items, the rise and fall of the L$ and many many more. With each topic, it seems that more and more voices would emerge to add to the mix, which is definitely a good thing - I think the forums are the most active they have ever been, for better or worse at times.

2004 definitely had certain themes to it - overall it was land, money, and government. Actually not surprising, since 2004 started with such a dramatic change in SL (the move from no prim limits/tiers to what we have now). I imagine money or lack there of, was the dominant theme in a year that saw players spending and making money from an online world at levels no one could really have predicted would happen so fast. It's interesting that many predictions from the commerce=evil threads at the beginning of the year came true, just not in the ways that were expected. McDonalds, Disney and Coke have not come steamrolling through SL turning it into a commercial wasteland. What actually happened is some players ended up doing that themselves - they became the brands.

All in all, definitely an interesting year in SL.

It started in August of 2003 during the great SL blackout. I don't remember the exact details but power outage in San Francisco affected Linden Lab of course and SL was down for hours!

I loved that thread, I was the first to reply. hehe

Don't forget about the Teen Grid threads, collectively they count for quite a bit.

That is because all topics in General are not that old. When the new page came, all posts that were in general got switched to the Archives. You would have to do a search in all forums.

Thank you Ironchef.

And the tradition lives on with the 3 Word Thread Reborn which I started on 10/6/2004 because Ironchef's original thread didn't make the transition.

As of this writing there are 83 pages, 3,285 Replies and 13,486 Views.

Major problem with an Archive search Vade is that not all the thread are in the Archives, many disappeared when this new Forum.

To this day no one at LL seems to be able to fix that...
