One of the interesting consequences of baron/ess partionioning of sims, is that the entire sim is used. In a Linden partitioned sim, there is a certain amount of protected land which lays fallow. In the privately portioned sims, all of the land is for sale. This suggests that, ceteris paribus, the privately partitioned sims will have an average performance less than their Linden-partitioned brethren, because there will be more land in use per sim.

quite true, it also generally means they will be utterly blanketed in builds with no recognizable features left pristine

Here is a thought on owning your own sim. Why doesn't someone do a "Sim Lottery"? Sell lottery tickets at L$1000 a piece. Have the lottery ticket machine email or XML the purchase off-world for record keeping purposes. Set a total cost + profit mark when then lottery will be held (I estimated L$700,000 back when GOM was running around $1.30). This includes the initial purchase plus 1 year of monthly costs. Convert the Lindens to US, pay LL the one time fee and the years maintenance, pocket the profit margin. (assuming LL would allow you to pay for someone elses sim) To make it nice and legitimate, use RATE or the other in-world financial assurance system (name slips me atm) to audit you.

Anyhow, just an idea, I worked it out once and I think it is very feasible (assuming LL has no problem with it). I just didn't want to deal with the customer support issues.

the problem here is the number of people in the market for an individual sim, at any one time, is probably countable on yer fingers (and mabye toes), not 700 by any stretch of the imagination

it's an idea. ll would probably require you to pay the setup fees in your own name then a $100 transfer fee to put it all in the new owner's name. that is the formal policy for giving someone an estate that you've purchased. so you'd need to factor that amount into your total cost. you could still make a tidy profit though if enough tickets were sold.

is it reasonable to publish that a certain number of tickets must sell or the lottery is off and everyone gets their money back?

I think you missed my point. I would gladly pay L$1,000 for a chance to win a fully paid private sim for 1 year. I think there are 700 people out there that might cough that up. Maybe not... only really 1 way to tell I guess.

I haven't poked at the numbers lately, but I think it is about US$5 for 1 chance in 700 to win something worth US$3,500. Not too bad. Plus some people will buy more than 1 ticket - thus increasing their odds. So you probably won't need 700 customers. I would guess more like 400 (just a swag).

Unless I'm mistaken, ever since the introduction of Stinson and Rodeo and all sims south of Immaculate (Client verison 1.2?), all new mainland sims contain some Linden protected land. Even when an entire mainland sim is auctioned off as a whole. (Private sims are a different beast since the owner can manipulate the entire sim area there.)

So if someone buys/wins an entire mainland sim and proceeds to parcel it up and resell it, it will still contain some Linden protected right-of-ways.

Is this still true or are there whole mainland sims being auctioned that contain no Linden protected land?

Sal, without looking at the map right now, I know Swain has no Protected Linden Land. The whole Sim was cut up into 15 4096x4096 parcels and 4 2048x2048.

Is it me, or does there seem to be entirely too many Snow sims? I'm also not particularly fond of the "geography'" of the Snow Sims (mostly). Anyone else have thoughts or feelings about that?

My personal tastes: I'd prefer a full sim on the mainalnd as opposed to a private sim. To me it would be worth the extra cash to retain the rights to re-parcel and sell portions of the land.

I would be very disappointed if waterways weren't protected in the new sims. Everyone, including the sim owner, benefits from people traveling through by boat/sub.

yeah we screamed and yelled for protected waterways so that we could boat all over the grid without interuption. they did that for us thank you linden types.

several of the recently auction sims, however, have been 65536sm whole kit and kaboodle (i have no idea what that means). i suppose the lindens figure that we can sail around them.

Just wondering... what would people's reactions be if someone bought an entire sim, developed it (houses, roadways, etc.), parcelled off the plots intelligently (a plot gets a whole hill, for instance, rather than 4 plots getting a quarter a piece of it), and then resold for a profit?

sounds kisslingish. i think it's a great idea. would the developer retain ownership of the land under the roadways so that the parcels would remain properly sized?

I dont know about the parcelling of a sim, anyone can do that. The land I own was initially a perfect 4096m plot with a cove. Right before it was auctioned, the lindens split the cove down the middle and made two 2048m plots. I was not going to share the cove with anyone and had to fight for two plots in auction. It made no sesnse to split it down the middle and was pretty upsetting at the time. Anyone can cut out a desireable parcel.

Yes, anyone can cut out a desireable parcel. And I agree, the Lindens don't always get it perfectly right (mutter, mutter, outside my front door, mutter, mutter). But I haven't seen any effort at all going into making the parcels desireable or even practical when current Whole Sims are parcelled by others. Most get put into regular little 512m2 rectangles all through.

If enough sims where available to the wholesaler, they would probably leave the other auctions alone.

'Probably'. Ah, Schwan, you are such the optimist.

I doubt this very much when all I see from the auctions is a desire to become a monopoly business (and I don't mean you, obviously!)

Four whole sims!!

My blood courses through my veins most eagerly at the prospect!!

Nay, I may not partake as many of the 'smarmy' barons seek to own these plots part and parcel complete! Be wary of the wiley, those that beg your business for they hide secrets even I cannot name!!

Wonderful weekend, calou calay!!
